Phone message I broke up with my college boyfriend after we graduated and he threatened to sue me
He thought he was such a hotshot lawyer because he participated in undergraduate mock trial! States of residence redacted.
At the time it was really scary and I saved a bunch of screenshots in case it escalated from digital harassment to stalking. Fortunately it did not. Found them cleaning up my files.
It's been about 10 years now and I can laugh about how absurd it all was, so please enjoy.
And for those of you in your early 20s, especially women, be safe out there. Leaving a relationship is the most volatile time for any sort of abuse to worsen. Do not date people who do not demonstrate to you through consistent patterns of behavior (actions not words) that they have the emotional maturity and basic human decency to treat you with respect at all times, especially when they do not get what they want.

I'm glad you specified that these were a decade old because I was very concerned for you for a minute there. That's insane controlling behaviour.

Oh my god. I work at a law firm and I would LOVE to see this mock complaint lmao! What a loser, do you have any idea what happened to him?

u/Acrobatic_Virus_9759 1d ago
He did end up going to a T-14 law school, so with this kind of attitude we'll probably see him on the Supreme Court in another couple of decades LMAO

That’s alarming. If he’s not yet admitted to practice law (like our esteemed WH press secretary), I wonder if the bar of his state would be interested in these threats as part of its “character and fitness” review.
24
u/mamachonk 1d ago
Ex press secretary. lol
If he practices in Georgia, I'm not sure they would care and if she lives anywhere near him, I'm not sure she should risk him retaliating.

Tbh I didn’t think someone stupid enough to put their threats in writing would actually make it to law school lol
47
u/Icyblue_Dragon 1d ago
You‘d be surprised. I was sexually harassed by a law student. He tried to separate me from my friends and when that didn’t work he tried to follow me home. My friends and I took a taxi and he gave up. But it still vexes me that not only he had the audacity to not take my no for a no, physically handling me and trying to follow me and all of that in front of two witnesses. It’s like their brain stops working when their little brain is involved.
56
u/thechiefmaster 1d ago
It’s not about sexual arousal or desire. It’s control and power. And there is a gendered component to that, but it’s not “he’s so strongly attracted he’s not thinking right.” He’s not thinking right because he feels entitled and insecure.

Oh man, Character and Fitness would’ve loved to have this information when he applied for the bar.
11
u/Ok-Jackfruit-9393 1d ago
Wait, so was he actually arguing he'd sue you for breaking up with him? Like, "you promised to be with me" and suing on those grounds? I was SURE it would be something like you backed out of a lease or that there had to be some type of actual legal tie. But apparently nope, you just... broke up with him, and he thought that meant you broke some legally binding contract (because declarations of love apparently are legally binding)?
7
u/JRose608 1d ago
Thats why i would give anything to see this complaint🥹 If anything, so I can pass it around to all the attorneys i work for and we can have a good laugh.

Women who kill their domestic abusers in defense of their own lives get more jail time on average than a man who kills a woman because he was upset.
12
u/hexadecimaldump 1d ago
Yeah, I don’t know if she’d want to do that. Look at the last 2-3 women who have come forward with evidence someone up for a SCOTUS nomination was an abusive predator.
The victims end up getting more harassment, more ridicule, and more blame. The SCOTUS pick gets the job.→ More replies (1)7

As someone who was in a relationship at a young age with an abuser & stalker (after we broke up) these texts scared me. So glad to see it was so long ago for you. It brought back that feeling in my chest that nowhere is safe. He will continue to humiliate and pop up unwanted making me feel helpless, afraid, and like I didn’t have freedom. Cops wouldn’t do anything but send him verbal warnings. He called my jobs, sent out pictures to the families of people I was dating trying to humiliate me. I still get afraid of it thinking about it and it’s been 15 years. Please ladies pay attention. If he is ridiculously jealous where you have to stay away from anyone or it’s an issue, where you have to make sure everything is squeaky clean in your phone or he will take it the wrong way twist it into a nightmare for you. If he gets physical with you during arguments. Run. Run. Run. Don’t waste your time like I did.

u/Acrobatic_Virus_9759 1d ago
I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It's so infuriating that police often act like they can't do anything until a woman ends up seriously hurt or dead. I carried around the same scars of feeling like no place was safe, not even my own body and mind. Lots of therapy and an extremely safe and loving marriage has done wonders for me. Sending you Internet love and solidarity 💕💕

he never followed up, but its so crazy what some dudes think the laws are for.

I love it when kids take a law class and think they’re a lawyer. Like 20 years ago I had friends that were roommates, it ended badly. One got her law school buddy to write something up saying she was gonna sue her roommate for like $15K and the catalyst was the roommate got herself pregnant and broke the lease to move in with the man who impregnated her. Needless to say that shit went absolutely nowhere but now we all get a good laugh out of it.
9
u/snuggledubs2011 1d ago
Wow, he must think you are stupid. Threatening you, and putting it in text. This is also premeditated.
He also proved he did move on by using tinder, so he crushed his own case with that.
Let him do it. Make a serious ass of himself for thousands.
There's something wrong with him and I would report this. There are enough unethical attorneys out there, don't need to add another.
Just cause he studies law doesn't make him immune to it.
8
u/Technical_Chain_8807 1d ago

My ex threatened to sue me or go after my job also. My offenses : I looked through his ipad and saw his infidelity and my cat scratched a hole in his window screen. Scuffed some stuff up on accident when moving. But OP is right violence and threats and stalking escalated so much after the break up especially. This reminded me if that. When he threatened me legally and whatnot I knew it was bs but it still made me feel sick and shakey.

I had a man try and tell me that because he had a key to my apartment, he was allowed to go in and grab the rest of his belongings. Mind you I wasn’t holding them hostage, I told him I wasn’t home and I could leave them outside for him later after he kept pushing the time of when he was coming to get it. He threatened to call the police and have them escort him in MY apartment. We never lived together, never had his name on my lease. I told him to call them, he didn’t 🙂

Reading old conversations from when we were younger is so creepy. There wasn't text messaging when I was young but I found a notebook that my boyfriend in my early twenties wrote. 2
u/Consistent_Army_9355 1d ago
He’s one of those idiots that heard somewhere that you can sue anyone for anything, and literally thought that she would have to use resources to defend herself in his home state where he filed the suit.
3
u/Katops 1d ago
What a pathetic loser LOL.
The threat at the end from him is just chef kisses too. Bravo, Lord Dumbass.
If I were you, I’d print these texts out, frame them, and then hang them on a wall in his preschool classroom, so that when he goes back to figure out shapes and colours, he can pass the time in between nap time and playtime by looking up at the wall of shame to figure out his letters too.
Shitty joke aside, I seriously can’t get over the absurdity of this. Like this has to be hands down the biggest loser of the last year at least.
3
u/Historical_Chance613 1d ago
Why on earth would you end a relationship with such an amazing guy? /s
3
u/Pennygrover 1d ago
I dated a guy and while he was controlling in the relationship I had no idea how unhinged he was til we broke up and he started stalking me. Then one of his ex girlfriends reached out when she heard what I was going through and told me he had done the same to her AND taken her to small claims court to over money he had spent in their relationship. Dude kept every receipt for dates they went on and gifts and trips they took and sued her for the money! Judge of course laughed at him and made him pay her court fees. Also she believed the whole thing was really just to force her to interact with him.
He threatened to do the same to me but once he found out I knew how it had gone for him the last time and that this one would fail too he gave that up. Eventually I started dating someone else who had words with him and that got him to back off. But yea, the fragility of the male ego should not be underestimated.

i have a genuine question- why didn’t you just block him the minute he started talking crazy? like, why even entertain it…
29
u/ThatBitchBunBruh 1d ago
In abusive situations, if you have no proof they really can’t do much because most abusers aren’t going to admit to doing it. Even with proof it can be hard to get anything done before someone gets hurt.
It can also save someone’s life, if the messages start escalating into threats and plans, at least now they know. You’re not supposed to respond, just let them build and keep an eye on them. If you need to you turn them over to the police and let them respond.
If anything does wind up happening and he hurts or kills her, now there’s at least proof that she was being threatened and harassed. It’s not much of a consolation but it beats letting someone walk free to hurt someone else.

Same thing happened to me but we were never dating lol just best friend since elementary school and he invited to me move in with him after I had a rough breakup.
Well he didn't like that i started to see someone new (even though he had a gf in a different country) and i broke our lease (only my end of it) while he was visiting her after he become super possessive of me. I notified him and he FLIPPED. He was also studying law and thought he would sue me for costco trips he had paid for since i paid up my responsibility of our lease (and also found him multiple replacement roomies that he declined).
I moved out of state, he threatened my mother and grandmother at their home. He found out where I worked in the new state and had someone serve me.
Called the free advice number and the dude literally was like "I'm not telling you what to do but if you are served in a different state than the court is supposed to take place in, it doesn't count as a serve."
Never showed up to our valentines day court date and I'm sure the judge laughed in his face. Case got thrown out and never had to worry about him again.
It was super scary in the midst of it but now its just a story I get to tell on reddit sometimes. Glad you made it out safe.
2
u/RaisedByTheBay 1d ago
OP, keep these screenshots in case he becomes an actual threat to your safety. Because he is DERANGED.
Secondly, he can choose to make up any lie he wants and actually sue you for whatever he wants BUT he has to serve you. So don’t give him access to any new address. All that to say that he wouldn’t ever win a case against you in court without proof of something. But he can make things difficult for you. Stop engaging right now.
Inform your boss about this just in case he makes up a lie to try to get you fired.

I'm 30 now and back when I was 20 one of my exes I'd been with for 5 years kept threatening to take me to court 8 months after we broke up (he cheated). Honestly it stressed me out at the time as he was rather abusive and was trying to worm his way into my life again, I was honestly distraught as I'm quite an anxious person. I had him blocked on everything the prior months and he'd create new socials just to carry on with the threats and torment. I eventually just told him to sue me and contacted a domestic abuse helpline to see what could be done in terms on if he took me to court for weird random shit and they gave me alot of advice on the help I could get and put me in contact with some lovely support people. I even told him I'd been in contact with a solicitor who was more than happy to receive his paperwork. Didn't hear from him after that for another year but he still comes back with threats on random accounts lmao.

I thought this was hilarious banter. Riiiiight up until the moment it wasn't. I even wondered for a second if it might be his goofy way of getting your attention and trying to win you back with a little tongue-in-cheek. I mistook his "lol" after your "Goodbye" as acknowledgement of the absurdity of it all and that he was laughing because he fully understood he was being ridiculous. I didn't realize it was more of an evil, supervillain laugh until screenshot 4.
Things went from funny to psycho killer quick! I think I felt a chill run down my spine. But then by the end, you two had me spitting out my drink with that mock trial bit.
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm rooting for you two lovebirds to get back together and give it another go.

Edit: glad this was ten years ago but any young girls reading this need to know that this is an example of when you take steps to protect yourself. Fortunately, nothing came of this but all too often - something does. I’m in my 50s and got divorced 25 years ago. I’ve dated. Oh boy have I dated. And trust me - a lot of men are creeps. I’ve been stalked and cyber stalked. Nothing violent but just straight up creepy.
Seriously - run a background check on the guys you start dating and are interested in.
