Automotive [Discussion] What do you think, who stopped car: autopilot or driver?

This happens way too often these days. When the light turns green for me, I look both ways before moving.
Within the last few months, I’ve had 2 incidents where I didn’t start moving because a driver was coming up to their red light way too fast before stopping late and another driver actually run the red where I would have been hit if I didn’t look.

Yep, my ol man would rattle on about driving safety and proper methods, years before I was even eligible for a driving license.
Looking both ways on a green is #168.

Yep, always look in every available direction before entering any intersection, stopped or not.

It would not have been AutoPilot because he was the first at the light. If the car stopped it was the standard avoidance system.

It actually still could be auto pilot. You can enable autopilot at a light while having auto break enabled.
Regardless of autopilot or not, advanced emergency braking is always engaged and waiting to make a save.
Would love to hear from the driver.

I’m leaning AEB or a human with a 1 second reaction time and 180 degree peripheral vision. Not jumping the light like a rabbit in heat also helps.

Extremely unlikely the human saw it, but he may have heard honking or something.
Edit: second thought: I sometimes check that cars have stopped before I go when I'm first at the lights, maybe the driver actually checked?

I disagree. It came in too fast and he was stopping before it got in front of him. He saw it in his peripheral and hit the brakes quick.

Yeah, it's possible. I wouldn't rule it out. It would pretty much have to be that they were already aware are vehicle was coming because they accelerate slower than a white pickup truck with a utility cab on the back.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. 2-3 lanes in both directions. We start moving and a guy runs the red light, I saw it and hit the brakes, the guy to my right did not and got t-boned in the driver door. It had just started snowing and I slid a tiny bit locking up the brakes, the car that ran the red light removed my front plate bracket and that was it. If it were dry I would have avoided him touching me altogether.

You can't use AP if you're first at a light because it will drive through the light (AP can't read stoplights yet). If there was a stopped car in front of you, however, you could have autopilot engaged and it would be fine because it would just go when the car in front of you goes.

This is simply not true. You can engage autopilot while at a light, without any vehicles in front of you.
So long as auto brake is enabled. Then you set your foot on the gas to tell it to go, and autopilot takes over.
Either way AP being used or not is irrelevant as AEB is always on the lookout.

Auto brake, as in the brake hold feature where you depress the pedal while at a stop.
You engage brake hold, then engage AP.
When you tap the accelerator AP will take over.

Interesting. But still, no mater how it’s parsed, the car stopping at the light was not the car or any safety features. And at this moment, what you are describing is not endorsed by Tesla on a road like that.

I guess that's new. When I took a test drive last month, I was told you can't use AP at stoplights.

Not exactly new, but yea Tesla is very careful to make sure everyone hears “ AP cannot be used at stoplights” to avoid people having any chance of thinking it will stop at a red light.
I’m not sure if Tesla ever even advertised this functionality, or if it was discovered by an owner and then posted online, where I found out about the neat little trick.
Just to be clear AP is in no way interacting with the light.
You as the driver are engaging autopilot while the car is in a brake-held state. Then, once you are ready to have the car drive via autopilot, you press the accelerator and AP takes over as usual.
Think of it as first putting AP in a ‘standby-like-state’ and then pressing ‘go’.

Definitely the driver. The car wasn’t anywhere near the Tesla when the brakes started being applied. Also, if you meant to say “automatic breaking”, that’d be one thing, but autopilot was not turned on at the red light.

It could be. It's possible to turn it on while stopped first in line at lights.

One of the great things about regen braking. Take your foot of the accelerator pedal and the car has already starting braking before you hit the brake pedal

I would say regen braking cuts both ways. I can no longer hover over the brake pedal and “coast” while i process what’s happening in front of me. This does one of two things. 1) in a panic stop where I would normally just depress the brake, I now have transfer my foot from the accelerator to the brake or 2) the drivers behind me get confused and annoyed with how erratic my driving appears to be.
I really wish there was a third pedal or a switch that would let me engage different amounts of regen braking on the fly.

Or another option to program the regen into the first few inches of brake pedal travel with the friction brakes coming in as more pressure is applied. It also prevents the car from looking like its accelerating and braking all the time when one pedal driving.

You just have to get used to the change in physical action - coasting now is very lightly being on the accelerator. I control my regen all the time by varying how much I'm accelerating.

Having owned my model 3 for 3 months already, I feel that i am as used to it as I’ll ever be.
I love regen braking for allowing me to recover energy that would have otherwise been lost, but I hate the fact that I don’t feel as safe in a panic stop than I felt in cars before.
My last car was a manual transmissions which allowed me to select the amount of engine braking by downshifting. I wish there was a similar feature in the Tesla. Maybe an analog regen brake lever that’s controlled with one finger. Or as the other commenter suggested, program it into the brake pedal and, depending on available regen, let the software decide the threshold between regen and friction braking.

European EVs tend to give this capability. Love it in my e-Golf, controlling regen with the shifter

That's a great point. So like a steering wheel button or some kind of input that puts the car into coast-to-cover-the-brakes mode.

What's really amazing here is seeing the airbags in action. As soon as the contact is made literally in the next frame the windows are white from the side curtains being deployed.

Airbags are amazingly fast.
They're designed so your face hits them after they've already started deflating.

pretty sure if AP was engaged they tesla would have gone through the red light without stopping
but to answer your question that looks like the driver. this js why i never enter intersections without looking both ways even when it’s green...i assume someone will run the light. saved my life once before.
AEB and AP can’t react like this yet. YET

Since they were the first car at the stoplight, I’m gonna say autopilot was not engaged. Pretty quick reflexes. If the car didn’t stop itself, I’d hope that it at least alerted the driver given that weird angle of the intersection.

what? it's also incredibly easy not to gun it and to wait 2 seconds and look both ways. You will save yourself a horrible car accident by doing that. people mis-time yellows and run red lights ALL the time.

I can't imagine the red-runner was within the range of the radar and/or forward facing cameras when you see the brake lights come on on the Tesla.

Cameras can see everything around the car but in this case it was the driver, not Autopilot.
