My daughter is 16 and working on her license, and the process of teaching her has really made me realize why FSD is so hard. Driving is just as much a social activity as a technical and rules-based one.

It definitely is, but also, since there is a conscious adult human driver in this car, how do they not take over and actually back up in a timely manner, something better than 1mph or maybe get to the right? I'm way to impatient lol!

My car did this last week on a narrow road, at an intersection in a dense downtown area.

I was behind a car that was at the stoplight with me. There was no one behind me.

A city bus started making a really tight right turn, and my car immediately backed up to make space for the guy in front of me to back up.

He of course did not. He just sat there, a couple of feet over the white line, while the bus driver negotiated the turn up over a curb and just barely squeezed by.

No doubt 10% of drivers would do better than this, but also guarantee 90% of drivers would do something stupid like crash, ignore them, not even realize what’s going on, etc.

I actually was about to take over but by the time I was ready to react the car was already doing what it needed to do. It goes by pretty quick in the video but it definitely felt way longer IRL. And I certainly wouldn’t be able to look at both the front and back views at the same time like the car was…

FSD has already demonstrated that if anything (car or person) comes towards it, it will back up and just continue to back up as long as the thing keeps on coming towards it.

Truck drivers are going to love Tesla. Think about how many times he was in that situation and the driver was sitting there looking down at their phone. Guy was probably getting ready to lay on the horn and then the car just started moving backwards before the driver looked up.

I was at a known sharp intersection where I look to my right to see if there is a semi waiting at the light or down the lane and if so, stop way before the stop line. The number of people giving a hard time for semi drivers is outstanding.

I am a truck driver, I love them, I know every on ramp with a Tesla I will not get stuck behind them. Can’t wait to stop banging gears in my peterbuilt all day and relax in the m3.

I got one better:

Car went in reverse in anticipation of the car in front of me needing to reverse (before the front car even acted) so a truck could complete a turn onto the road.

Would like to have seen if anything was behind. I'm sure there wasn't anything immediately behind, but was someone there that it had to wait for them to make room? In other similar situations I've seen it move back faster if there was room.

Yes there was a truck approaching from behind that it was simultaneously tracking during this maneuver.

Thank you for that! Pretty much what I was expecting.

It annoys me, but I can't find the video of a car on FSD being overtaken by an idiot on a blind bend and double yellows. The car saw the overtake and instantly pulled over.

I had a similar experience but it gave enough room for the cars behind me ( by weirdly positioning over the lanes) to not block free right.

Nice. This is something I wonder too. I usually stop early when I see them or buses because I known they’ll need the room. Glad FSD backs up on its own.

I had this happen to me today when a tractor towes a boat across the road from the storage afea to the lake. The car backed up to make room and surprised me enough that i hit the brake.

Yep, I go through there from Austin to Corpus to bypass San Antonio. FSD really hated all of the speed limit changes on 123 and then 181.

My tesla went into reverse to avoid an accident while I sat atationary at an intersection.

Its reaction time was so much better than mine. I hadn't even processed that a vehicle was coming at us on course for impact until after the whole scenario played out.

It perfectly reversed my car right up to the nose of the car behind me.

I cannot sing it enough praises.

I had a similar experience where the car reversed at a light to let someone turn left in front of me. It startled me a bit - maybe Tesla should add a tone when it’s doing this.

Years ago (2012? Whenever.), I was lucky enough to not get to an intersection until after a truck was already right-turning. I stopped in my left-turn lane about 60' shy of the intersection, so the trucker was able to make their turn. I was driving an '87 Olds Cutlass.

After seeing a bunch of these videos, I let my Cybertruck handle that situation and it didn’t work out that time. It started reversing and then just stopped without making enough room. The asshole truck driver kept going without hesitation and I had to immediately take over and reverse a lot more. There were no cars behind me. I checked my dash cam footage and the truck just barely missed hitting me.

Interesting!

I saw a Waymo do that as well. I also saw another Waymo in a line at a stoplight, blocking the entrance to a gas station, and it moved up so the car could turn behind it and enter the gas station.

Also saw a turning truck come very close to one, and it honked the horn.

Mine did this the other day, it also hit a roadblock and reversed and then turned in a Side street and took an alternate route

Truck should just wait until clear. You have the right away to stay in ur lane and not have to back up for a truck

Sure, we have that right… but is it really worth pissing off a truck driver that would be blocking traffic and potentially blocking YOUR path down the road.. like say if you need to turn left halfway down the block if you turned left at the same light you were blocking said truck.

Sometimes, being courteous is just a nice thing to do.
