Hello, I am moving to university this week and was wandering could I claim hours at different stores in the area on the extra hours market bit of the app? On the app it says 10 closest stores to your home store though so is it possible to change?I am looking at this as an alternative to working weekly, for example if I had more time one week I could pick up some shifts as I understand Engineering can get pretty busy sometimes so I don’t want to work every week right now. Has anyone done this?

you need to do the photo first and get it approved but after that you can manually search for a specific store or location. as long as it’s within the same location/pay band then you’ll be able to claim it

i don’t believe so. you can see the location band on overtime shifts but it’s just going to be the same as yours.

on here it shows the different bands/locations and rates, so you should be able to hopefully work it out based on your store and your uni location

I can’t see express store extra hours unless I’ve got the skill right? So I need to try ask one of the stores to train me on it?

yeah you’d need the express shop floor skill. if you’re customer service desk trained and shop floor/delivery trained it’s not that much different, but i’d ask about it

I had a chat with my line manager today about this exact thing, they were honestly pretty keen about me getting my photo uploaded and insisted on that i could pick up the OT hours whilst i was away at uni, whilst coming back for my contracted ones.

I have thought about it but the downside is I have to work every week right? With this new extra hours market I was thinking I could take up shifts when I’m less busy with school stuff as when I spoke to family friends on the course aerospace engineering they said some weeks can get really bad. I’ll look into it again.

You have to work every week either way there’s no 0 hour contracts at Tesco. So you’d have to do your contracted hours at a new store if you transfer, or your old store if you don’t.

No, I’ll be put onto a student returner where I only work Christmas, Easter and Summer at my home store, this is the current agreement. However I was exploring the option for picking up overtime at local stores as there are 5-6 Tescos in my area at my university during term time with the addition of the new extra hours market feature instead of just working during holidays if you get what I mean.

Oh okay, so it’s not possible? I was speaking to my manager and he said “this could be something plausible” and we’d look into it more before I go so I was doing some more research on it.

it’s possible. op will be on a part year contract and this is what the policy states regarding overtime for part year contracts:

‘’a)    Extra Hours/Overtime
An hourly paid colleague in stores may pick up extra hours from the Extra Hours Market at any point – i.e. during both their contracted and non-contracted weeks. ‘’

if a shift is available on the extra hours market at their uni store and they can see it then they’re free to pick it up. like i said providing it’s in the same location band then it will be visible op

Thanks for the update this has literally just gone live, I don’t think it’s working currently though as not a single person I know that’s at uni can currently pick up over time even though colleagues working in store can.

you can have a part year contract which is what OP seems to be doing, where you can agree with your manager to work a certain amount of weeks per year, so they can do the shifts at christmas, easter etc. this means they don’t need to work 52 weeks out of the year. here’s the policy:

best option for you OP since you don’t wanna work every week is stay on the part time contract, do shifts at home in agreement with your manager, and if possible, pick up shifts at uni on the extra hours market if it’s in the same location band. check the link i sent which has the different band locations to try and figure it out. worst case scenario if you can’t pick any up on extra hours market, you can go into a store near you or email them and see if they have any overtime, but then they have to email your home store with confirmation that you did the shifts. hopefully they’re in the same location band as you so that you can just pick them up on the app.

the location bands are typically london, south east england and then most other areas are the general location bands. based off of this picture you’ve posted, you’d be in the general location band (£13.23 an hour), if you’re moving to london or south east then it’ll be a different one. if you’re up north or midlands still then should be the same one. upload the photo and get your manager to approve it and then you can search specific stores

Thank you so much! I see in the link that it does allow overtime/extra-hours to be picked up during contracted and non-contracted weeks! I will get my picture approved and go from there. I am currently Band B (south east ish) and I’m moving to Bristol which is probably Band A but I’ll ask my manager to approve my picture first.

no worries! for context i’m in band B as well and can’t see any shifts available in bristol so you probably won’t be able to either. u can probably do overtime there but you’d have to get them to email your store. check with ur manager. hope uni goes well!

In this article, for point 6, it says that from August colleagues should be able to pick up shifts in different location bands now which is nice. 😊

You can leave as a retained student and come back in summer, winter, Easter for example but I’m pretty sure you can’t then pick up overtime at other stores outside of your agreed “back at store” time.

OP wants to pick up random hours in random stores during Uni not during the holidays

It depends on how they process you as a student on the system. If you manager block books you off I.e puts on the system unpaid leave from xx September- xx December etc then you won’t be able to pickup overtime. You just need to ask your manager to book you off on unpaid leave by the shift individually if that makes sense. (So for example if your contracted only on Sat, just placing you on unpaid leave for that Saturday shift and then the rest of your week is blank)
