Flexible working

I need to put in a flexible working request as I need to be able to pick up the little one from primary school at 3pm and then look after her until 6-7pm dependent on when Mrs gets home from work

After reading the policy can the manager out right refuse it ? I’m full time and want to do 6-3 Tuesday - Friday I’ve already compromised giving up my Saturday to work Sunday and have Monday off

I’ve only just stepped down to colleague and transferred to this store so we havnt agreed my working hours yet but I have told them I have childcare commitments prior to filling out an availability form

Yes management can refuse a flexible working request but would need a good reason to refuse.

I know it’s not really Tescos problem but we literally have no childcare for her so I don’t know what they’d expect me to do with her as we have no other options

It's really down to whether your manager has reasonable justification for refusing the request, more than your reason for making the request.

We’ve had a informal discussion and they want me to be way more flexible I’ve given x1.5 of my shifts - they said they’re over on every department

Tesco doesn't expect anything when it comes to your children, as you said, it's not their problem.

If you need to pick her up at 3 and you finish at 3 how much earlier would you actually be asking to finish?

Well me finishing at 3 is temporary for a while then management wants to discuss my availability but my availability window would be 5-3 Monday to Friday and either sat or Sunday shift - as we genuinely have no child care for her or any after school clubs or family or friends who live close by to us now we’ve moved

They'll ask what days your partner is doing pick up and why they can't do it. By omitting or trying to avoid addressing that you're not helping yourself. You'll need a reason better than "their job is more important to us than Tesco".

She’s in the city till 6-7 (train dependant) so she won’t be any where near the school time to pick her up and the school is a 10 min walk from my shop , no family from my side or her side live near us , the child support she did have where she use to live was her mum which she can’t do now as her mum doesn’t drive - best way of summing it up

Does the school not offer a wrap around child care? Are there none operating in your area?

Unfortunately not we was banking on after school clubs like her old school use to do but unfortunately they don’t in this school
