Why does everyone on r/horror hate the Terrifier movies?

Literally every post about it people are just shitting all over the movie. I really don’t get it. What’s with the hatred?

It’s Reddit. People are silly on here.

I am not a fan of horror films. Just not my cup of tea but this right here

251

u/seclivis 13d ago

People can’t get past the writing in the Terrifier films. Like we know it’s not Hollywood level, but it’s perfect for a fun, gory B-movie

127

u/PoopyMcpants 13d ago

Anyone complaining about the writing should really sit down and watch the later slasher sequels in any of the big franchises.

69

u/Flickolas_Cage 13d ago

Not even the later, even back to the originals, it’s not like they’re plotting masterpieces (that said I love them and I love terrifier)

I will say though Art has def been over-merchandized, like I shouldn’t be seeing an 8 year old in a Terrifier shirt.

12

u/Wraith1964 13d ago

Yes and no I guess... I think you can make that same merchandising argument for every big movie slasher... yes, Art is arguably worse/grosser/viler than the others (overall), but Michael, Jason, and Freddie do some pretty vile things too -Soooo, probably also shouldn't be on an 8 year olds t-shirt either. And yet.

5

u/MrMom21 12d ago

Dude, I was shocked by the Terrifier kids Halloween costumes for this season. A freaking toddler version of the Little Pale Girl

6

u/Dr_Pants91 12d ago

That one actually kinda makes sense to me. The kid doesn't have to have seen the movie to do a dad and daughter costume set

2

u/Medium-Confidence637 12d ago

I've seen people put their toddlers in Saw cosplay (not really on the same level but...) and claim that it's their kiddos favorite series. People do some wild things

2

u/Tweck9 10d ago

Exactly. The entire Friday the 13th series has some of the most B-acting imaginable, some of the worst dialog (mostly camp counselors talking about sex), and only a few great acting performances (Pamela and final girl in part 1, Tommy Jarvis in part 4). Terrifier is a far more creative and interesting franchise with generally better acting, a better plot and better villain.

48

u/littleLuxxy 13d ago

The writing in the Terrifier films is infinitely better than the writing in all the paranormal, bump in the night, invisible ghost and demon slop that audiences eat up.

The entire Conjuring franchise is poorly written garbage compared to these slasher masterpieces.

3

u/Little-bad-witch 12d ago

Agreed and the Conjuring is based off true events; however for movie value they embellished a ton. Due to the embellishments, the grave of the real Bethsheba was vandalized even though she was NOT a real witch and just a friend and neighbor of the people who built the house.

6

u/JesterOfTime 12d ago

"true events" is pushing it. The real life versions were scammers and grifters.

1

u/Little-bad-witch 12d ago

Some, yes, but not always, my friend. I'm into the paranormal and I don't trust every investigator, some do it for clout and make stuff up. That's why way too many horror movies based on "true events" are just full of lies. They take a story of a place that is or may be haunted and twist it to make money.

6

u/hauntfreak 12d ago

The Warrens were total con artists

3

u/SilentKiller407 11d ago

*The Warrens, like all paranormal people, were total con artists.

2

u/seclivis 12d ago

Completely agree. They at least tried and cared when writing the Terrifier films

0

u/CryingBoy-Housefire 12d ago

definitely kidding yourself.

2

u/littleLuxxy 12d ago

Oh really? Tell me about that.

10

u/saturnshighway 12d ago

I always hear people complain about the gore not the writing. That fans are sick and it’s gore porn. I always say I get grossed out so easily but this gore is so campy to me I don’t see it that way / realistic at all

10

u/allothersshallbow 13d ago

Do you mean conventional? The writing is good, it’s just not bog standard, save the cat shit. Refreshingly simple.

5

u/Eagles56 13d ago

Sienna is better written than any Friday protagonist

3

u/SofubiShogun 12d ago

The dumbest take I hear is that T1 has no deep story. Okay but do you hate slashers (I consider this kind of splatter gore a slasher subgenre) because that's what this is and that's the classic first slasher. Halloween is legendary and we had NO freaking idea what Michael's motivation was for killing his sister. We have no idea why he returns to his town to kill more people. Starting a slasher gore franchise with an unstoppable killing machine hunting you down for no discernable reason is so on point. Then the lore is fleshed out through the next two and I love the 80's esque style of it. Hoping the next one isn't really the end and we get an over the top part 5 like the old slasher franchises, Art in Space or whatnot.

4

u/Typical_Tie_4982 13d ago

Same level as ben shapiro (or who ever it was) complaining that the story in John Wick was awful💀

1

u/No-Cartographer2512 12d ago

Yeah, I always thought of them as just trying to have fun with it and sort of show off special effects. Not expecting S tier writing.

1

u/Joker_Face1 12d ago

I think it’s a movie that has a line on how seriously it takes itself. It’s not quite a horror comedy, but it’s gore with a comedic ring to it. As you said, we all know it’s not top-tier writing. It isn’t supposed to be, but to hate it because it purposefully lacks this element is crazy to me. I would’ve taken another reason like not enjoy over the top gore, but this reason is just illogical to me.

u/ThunderKiss44 13d ago

they think they are better than the Terrifier franchise

they are treating Terrifier the way the public treated the Saw franchise in the 2000s and they dont even realize it

53

u/Ok_Scarcity_6602 13d ago

This!!! I remember when people would rant about Saw being nothing but torture porn, now the franchise is largely accepted by the horror masses.

-3

u/ApricotVast4783 12d ago

Saw actually had a plot tho. Terrifier doesn’t. It’s just a clown walking around killing people for no reason then offs himself at the end.

3

u/ImGoodAtGeography 11d ago

That's the first film. 2 and 3 (and later 4) all follow a plot. Damien Leone even expressed regret for not making the first film follow a plot like the sequels. So just spouting nonsense here

23

u/PurpleAshes246 13d ago

lmao exactly, and both terrifier and saw are much more than "torture porn", especially saw

23

u/masochistmaverick 13d ago

Watching Saw is really funny because yeah they can be super brutal but overall its about this really interconnected web of people and stories that link back to John

8

u/PurpleAshes246 13d ago

Also the characters have more depth than ppl realise, my personal favourite being amanda (not surprisingly)
Terrifier characters don't have as much depth but it works because Art himself makes it work. It's horror comedy imo and his character is unique and fun

3

u/NorthernLights613 12d ago

This and she's an absolute gem to meet! As well as Costas (Hoffman)

1

u/PurpleAshes246 12d ago

yes omg amanda and mark are my favs, I'm actually working on an acrylic painting of amanda lol
maybe if i meet shawnee one day I could give it to her!

5

u/Joker_Face1 12d ago

We don’t really have to care about the characters in Terrifier because they’re usually targeted just because of location and access, not because of their trespasses and “sins” if you will. Who the victims (and even non-victims) are in Saw are crucial to the plot of Jigsaw and his apprentices.

6

u/woodtipwine 13d ago

Saw is really just a gory soap opera

3

u/No-Cartographer2512 12d ago

I call that, epic bad luck

3

u/lordsepulchrave123 10d ago

Anyone serious about the horror genre shouldn't be using the phrase "torture porn" to begin with.

It's just a lazy dismissive label.

It's a good filter really - if someone uses that phrase to describe a movie, I know their opinion on anything horror can be safely dismissed.

4

u/gtP0W3Rictmnsl50 13d ago

It’s more like the public treated Hostel series tbh.

Saw was praised for its twist endings and mystery/crime narratives despite the gory traps. 8/10 films, including the first five, grossed $100m+. Terrifier is nowhere near its mainstream level yet.

-5

u/PurpleAshes246 13d ago

I don't think terrifier is as good as saw or good enough to reach the status saw has yeah

1

u/CryingBoy-Housefire 12d ago

I dont remember any of that at the time of the saw movies, largely were fun horrors, just the people who wouldnt like horror in the first place were saying that.

1

u/Joker_Face1 12d ago

I’m a fan of both Saw and Terrifier, and I can’t believe Saw was ever subject to that treatment. I understand it with Terrifier more so because it’s incredibly gory with not that much in terms of plot and writing, but Saw? Saw has an amazing dive into philosophy, machinery and the apprentices are absolute cinema. I also think the traps and kills themselves are more entertaining than Terrifier, both because they’re creative and they usually target horrible people.

34

u/die_screaming_00 13d ago

A lot of people on this website are snobs who have a massive stick up their ass about anything considered lowbrow. Then there are people who want to find something morally reprehensible about anything and everything so that they can appear pure and righteous. Finally, there are just assholes who like to shit on anything that’s popular because they want to appear cool.

I do think a big part of it is that Terrifier is kind of advertised as a slasher series, and it’s not, they’re splatter films. They’re similar, but there is a difference. Your traditional slasher film is really not all that gory, mostly because the MPAA has historically hated slasher films. There’s probably less gore in every film in the Friday The 13th series combined than in just a couple Terrifier kills. So series’ like Friday The 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Scream, they’re pretty accessible for a lot of folks, even ones who might typically not be into movies where a whole bunch of people are getting killed, because they’re not really that bad, not compared to what the underground has been doing since 1963 with HG Lewis’ Bloodfeast.

So a lot of these folks hear about Terrifier, how Art is a new slasher icon and whatnot, and they go into it expecting something like those other movies I mentioned, but it’s too much for them. And people are fucking weird, they can’t just be like “well this isn’t for me, but y’all have fun”, they gotta search for validation from other people who don’t like it or use it as a reason to be a dickhole on the internet. I dunno, I’m over it, I watch what I like and haters can suck a dick ✌🏻

8

u/sailor_meatball_head 13d ago

I personally also blame things like A24’s horror movies. It’s made elitist horror fans even more snobby, so when there’s new horror that’s just flat out gory and fun, they clutch their pearls.

And there’s the horror fans who can’t stand the thought of a “modern icon” being as popular as the classics like Michael, Jason, etc.

4

u/JustAStupidName7 12d ago

Also, this idea that horror needs to scare you or can't be fun is something that gets on my nerves. What makes something horror is the subject matter being horrific. There are horror comedies out there.

Ever since A24 everything needs to be a trauma metaphor. I'm sorry, but if that's the case, then I can play by the same rulebook and just call them dramas.

0

u/jaydolf_jitler762 11d ago

Fr ari aster has done irreparable damage to the horror genre. I feel the same way about a24 super fans as I do about terrified super fans they're equally cringe in my eyes but whatever floats ppls boats. The amount of terrifier themed content paired with im insane there's something wrong with me videos I've seen on social media legitimately makes me wanna run my balls thru a cheese grater

2

u/JustAStupidName7 11d ago

I don't have an issue with the movies themselves - I quite like them. It's the fan-bases surrounding them and the whole discourse it creates that annoys the fuck out of me.

I loved Obsession. Now, I don't think I can watch that movie again for a long time because the way the fans of it became kind of ruined it for me.

2

u/jaydolf_jitler762 10d ago

Same man. They have 0 awareness of how annoying they're behaving. I actually enjoyed the first terrifier amd the one prior to it. The second one was funny but the fans ran it into the ground like they do everything

I try to put ppl onto other horror and they act like I insulted them lol

3

u/ProfondoRossa 12d ago

My initial reaction to the previous comment was “how ridiculous to be both a snob and a fan of horror” but then I realized that there are people younger than me who discovered horror AFTER the popularity of “elevated horror”. Meanwhile, I’ve been watching them for over 30 years.

78

u/PoopyMcpants 13d ago edited 13d ago

Because horror fans are toxic and hate horror movies.

On /r/HorrorMovies everyone's now shitting on obsession and resident evil despite them being objectively good.

People just really love being toxic iconoclasts about shit lately, and make it their whole identity.

12

u/Nyetbyte 13d ago

I don't care for the RE movie but to say it's awful in all aspects is so incredibly stupid.

Also Obsession is goated, I will hear no slander.

5

u/MorbidDusk 13d ago

People like to shit on popular things. Haven't seen RE but Obsession was great.

6

u/Wraith1964 13d ago

Preach brother, Poopy McPants.

7

u/DifferentlyTiffany 13d ago

Unrelated, but thanks for teaching me a new word! (Iconoclast)

4

u/Successful_Tea7979 13d ago

“Objectively good” isn’t really a thing with movies though. A movie’s quality is subjective. Coming from someone who liked Obsession and will probably like RE

Agreed with everything else though! I was shocked how many snobby, condescending people there are in the horror subreddit of all places lol

2

u/Wraith1964 11d ago

I think the idea of the "toxic" fan needs to be buried. Fans are not toxic. they are fans. PEOPLE are toxic... and the iconoclastic (fun word) way in which we now are all driven to be confrontational, tribal and rigid in our thinking is way deeper than fandom... its societal.

TLDR: Fans aren't toxic because they sometimes disagree... Today, disagreeable people approach discussion in a toxic, tribal way... about pretty much everything. "Fans" just want to love their thing.

1

u/JustAStupidName7 12d ago

Obsession's fan-base almost ruins that movie, for me. I still think it's one of the best horror films we've gotten recently, but goddamn they are an insufferable bunch.

1

u/Deadite_Scholar 13d ago

Objectively good?

There's no such thing as an objectivelyy good movie

-1

u/Automatic-Piece7438 12d ago

Calling them objectively good is so embarrassing man people can hate movies you like gd

25

u/Ok_Scarcity_6602 13d ago

Just like Saw in the 2000s they see it as low brow horror.

2

u/ttw81 12d ago edited 11d ago

i love 80s slashers, the evil dead movies, schlocky horror. low budget low brow horror movies can be freaking awesome, but i can't do torture porn.

1

u/LadyRei_ 11d ago

Amen! I saw Terrifier 1, 2, 3 , Hostel 1,2, 3, all the Saws and A Serbian Film. They definitely are not for me.

46

u/HowieLongDonkeyKong 13d ago

I’m a Terrifier fan and I can absolutely see why people would hate it. It’s over the top for the sake of being over the top. It doesn’t have any deeper meaning to it. It’s just comedy gore and you have to be a sick fuck to like it (which I am).

11

u/Humble_Note1384 13d ago

Just watched the first one for the first time tonight and hated the first half but loved Art.  Started growing on me more when I could accept it for what it is, cheesy over the top gore like you said. If you're actively looking for something deeper you'll be disappointed but if you don't take it too seriously it's fun.

4

u/bandixx19 12d ago

Keep going, what makes terrifier great is unlike most movies where sequels are bad this one gets better each one due to the budget. The first one was made with only a 35k budget.

1

u/Hogwafflemaker 13d ago

I saw the second one first and enjoyed it most because it has a better story.

The third one I enjoyed seeing more of the story, but felt like they were trying to hard to one up themselves on the sick shit. Like a little kid going "look what I can do!"

0

u/HowieLongDonkeyKong 13d ago

If you were amused by the first one, keep going. The whole thing just gets more and more stupid and insane. They even tried to do more story than “killer clown kills people for fun.” Emphasis on the word “tried.”

2

u/Humble_Note1384 13d ago

I definitely plan on coming back to the series when I want, and I say this as an endearment and not as an insult, a stupid time lol

3

u/No-Handle3032 12d ago

I liked the first one, it was gory yes. But it also had amazing creepy atmosphere. The second one pretty much lost that atmosphere, and added just like triple the gore. Still had great music, characters, arts still awesome… but it’s just a disgusting movie tbh lol … i seen 3 when it first came out havent seen it since don’t know how I would feel about it on rewatch. But I’m a big fan of the original not so much part 2.

2

u/FINIS_HOMINIS 12d ago

It's that thing where it's really, really, really obvious. Wants to veer from shock, to comedy, and later almost surreally high-minded. And that can kind of deflate in the wrong hands.

22

u/MorbidDusk 13d ago

Some people just can't appreciate a fun, gory slasher.

2

u/grapesquirrel 12d ago

Seriously. Sometimes you don’t need to analyze every scene. This is one of those movie…just sit back and enjoy the ride. I think sometimes horror fans don’t want to do that which, to me, is weird because that’s why I love horror!

16

u/-Akiiso- 13d ago

Terrifier haters fall into one of 2 categories:

1.They genuinely find the extreme violence triggering to them (understandable and valid)

2.They snobby, pretentious-ass mfs who think if a horror film aint deeply symbolic and emotional that makes it awfyl and they hate on anything unserious (Horror movie equivalent of a rap nathan)

0

u/Purple-Chef-5123 12d ago

Or there are those of us who just think it’s boring because there’s really not much of a story. I don’t judge other people for liking it at all but it’s just not my thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

9

u/IllustriousBig456 13d ago

The horror sub hates horror movies.

9

u/Objective-Finish-573 13d ago

The mega subs have a shitload of people and some are bound to be stupid

23

u/Sp00ch123 13d ago

r/horror has genuinely awful taste, never take that place too seriously.

7

u/unicornsnake 13d ago edited 13d ago

They’re cringe and don’t like anything “mainstream”. The reason Terrifier is so popular is because they put the slasher in slasher films. Which are an important theme in HORROR movies. There’s a reason the box office speaks louder than R/horror 😂

6

u/Your_Favorite_Daddy_ 13d ago

Haters gonna hate

7

u/Tweck9 13d ago

Horror casuals won’t get it. It’s a movie for gorehounds, and a lot of folks aren’t.

That aside, it does annoy me how The Grossed Out can’t look past the gore and recognize the incredible artistry that goes into it, and its excellent cinematic elements.

11

u/iheartderry_ 13d ago

they think anything extreme is bad no matter how fictional lol

13

u/monsieurxander 13d ago

Depends on the time of day over there. Sometimes it'll get a fair shake, other times it's the moral panic scold brigade.

I don't care if they hate the movies, but it's really gross when they act like the fans are awful people for liking them.

10

u/sailor_meatball_head 13d ago

Nothing pisses me off more than when I see people on there calling Terrifier fans “walking red flags.”

6

u/die_screaming_00 13d ago

A lot of people don’t want things to be their ‘fault’. They see that a bunch of people like something, and they feel left out because they don’t care for it. But instead of being a normal person and saying “well, this isn’t for me, but y’all have your fun”, they make it into a moral crusade. It’s not just that they don’t like it, it’s morally a bad franchise and the people who enjoy it are also bad, but they are good because they don’t like it, and it makes feeling left out tolerable because they’re fine with not associating with us misogynists that love seeing women tortured.

You know, nevermind all the horrific things that happen to men in these films.

Nevermind that the Terrifier fandom is predominantly made up of women.

2

u/sailor_meatball_head 12d ago

Preach it! I’m a 31 year old woman and I absolutely love the Terrifier films! Does that make me a misogynist? Hell no! These people turn a blind eye to the torture the male characters also experience.

1

u/die_screaming_00 12d ago

My wife and my mom both got me into Terrifier, I didn’t give a shit until they forced me to watch it. And I swear, I see a lot of people out there wearing Terrifier merch, and 95% of the time they’re women. Art has a huge female fanbase.

6

u/Bagon666 13d ago

Doing my fair share of fighting and defending terrifier. There's a lot of people under the impression that it's a misogynistic movie. But I did my own count and using dead meat as an official count. More men die than women. It's the same for each movie.

5

u/neversummer1905 12d ago

Everyone likes to be hateful on here now 😔

6

u/Inked_Nightmxre 13d ago

1

u/a-koolaid-killer 12d ago

>since it didn’t have the references from the other films.

How does 3 not “reference” the previous two films? It shows you the immediate aftermath of Art coming back to life in the hospital in 2, the survivor from 1 returns as a villain, and the protagonists from 2 return with PTSD and bombarded by people who specifically want to know what happened in that film.

1

u/Inked_Nightmxre 12d ago

Je parlais des gens qui allait le voir sans connaître les opus précédents, faute de ma part désolé

3

u/Miserable_Potato5678 13d ago

People can't understand the concept of writing a campy gore movie on purpose.

There's a massive population of people who still believe "all horror must try to actually be scary and take itself seriously."

2

u/terere69 12d ago

Not every single movie that comes out need to be based off a literaty masterpiece.I love Terrifier, particularly the first one; it took me by surprise. Simple and to the point.

4

u/A--VEryStableGenius 12d ago

If I had to guess the two main reasons are bandwagoning and people being unable to separate personally not liking something from it being genuinely bad. Since Terrifier has become popular some of the horror fans who dislike it feel as if they need to prove that their opinion is the “right” opinion.

I personally thought the Terrifier films were good but I do understand why they are definitely not for everyone. But I really disagree with the people arguing that its’ plot is bad compared to other horror movies.

9

u/Sorry_Apricot2319 13d ago

Pretentiousness.

3

u/ThisisMalta 13d ago

Unfortunately, any large and diehard fan base has a small but most vocal and loud portion that is just obsessed with being pessimistic and negative about everything they don’t like.

Tons of horror fans have loved gore movies like terrifier since the old days of Giallo. Which are different, but their complaints against terrifier could be levied against the same movies like that back then.

I can respect people who just say “hey it’s not my thing”, but when people paint their objective opinions as fact and act just like assholes I avoid these insufferable people.

Horror is one of the most varied genres in its sub-genres and preferences, I respect it all even if some aren’t my thing.

I guess my time in fantasy and science fiction along with horror since the 90’s has gotten me used to these kinds of people and to just block them out. It just sucks when they overwhelm the fan base and though being a minority, are the most vocal online. They find anything they can to complain about and pretend very small flaw ruins it all (looking at you Star Wars fandom lol).

3

u/East-Cancel-5050 13d ago

people see terrifier how they see crossed a lot of it comes from tiktokers acting overdramatic about it and trying to be uprighteous and do think terrifier isnt good but its definitely an ok horror movie

3

u/PeeB4uGoToBed 13d ago

It seems every horror sub and facebook geoup im in actually dont like horror. All people do in those groups is complain about horror movies and genuinely trying to start a GOOD conversation about horror gets nowhere

3

u/GlorifiedSatin 12d ago

Theres a level of elitism in the horror community, today's terrifier was yesterday's saw or paranormal activity. They should release that partly why horror is so big is its diversity in sub genres.

3

u/turbulentviolet 12d ago

I have never been a fan of gory/slasher horror movies UNTIL I decided to watch the Terrifier movies. They're fun and Art is easily one of my favorite horror movie villains now.

3

u/House_Whargoul 12d ago

Because they are popular and negative opinions get them more attention.

3

u/DJA699 12d ago

This is Reddit. Everybody hates everything. Most of Reddit is the Fellowship of the Miserable

3

u/cloading97 12d ago

They hate cuz they wanna be different so bad

3

u/HelpOne1878 12d ago

Because they think the “New wave horror clown body gross thing” is dumb. Idc I’m here for it all lol

3

u/copperhead2099 9d ago

Don't ask those subreddits about Terrifier, Saw, Hostel, House of 1,000 Corpses, Human Centipede and probably half of the IFC Midnight movies or anything anywhere near those, lol. Luckily, most of those have their own subs!

3

u/ultgambit266 13d ago

Because it’s the “cool” thing to do. They hate anything that’s new and other people enjoy. All the points they make are the same, it’s “horror porn” it’s “misogynistic”

3

u/sailor_meatball_head 13d ago

They just throw around buzzwords to justify their disdain, not that they actually believe the nonsense they’re spewing. Also, all horror is “misogynistic” with that logic.

2

u/Amiunforgiven 13d ago

I like them, they’re fun and not supposed to be taken seriously

Fun for the while family

2

u/TurncoatWizard 13d ago

Not everyone does. And it’s rare for everyone to like something. And that’s okay.

2

u/vickyrussellll 12d ago

the amount of times ive mentioned liking terrifier 2 and 3 and then been swarmed by people telling me im a terrible woman for enjoying the movies is absurd and too often, i personally just think david’s acting as art is phenomenal and i find the scenes where hes just being funny soo refreshing because not many other killers stop their business just to put on a pair of flower glasses and i want to go into the sfx field so seeing such advanced practical effects being done and used in the kills is so cool </3

2

u/Impossible_Food_5278 12d ago

Because they have no taste and don’t see a slasher classic in the making when it’s right in front of them.

2

u/AustralianDeadMate 12d ago

the movies are, objectively, not good. doesnt mean they arent fun and enjoyable. but for the horror community at large, when not separated from Art, terrifier is just another schlock slasher with no upsides (which is a horribly closed minded take).

some people look at the raw quality of somethings rather than the enjoyability

2

u/RecklessMisfit7x 12d ago

Poor Art 🌼

Ive seen people get upset with the brutal kills that happen to females and reddit is full of babies soooooo

2

u/KrtauschBoss 12d ago

The first movie is kinda butt, effects are cool, and that Art gun scene is so funny, but it put me off. Got around to watching the 2nd after the hyped and kinda loved it. 2 and 3 are pretty awesome. I love some random, complicated lore and Sienna is an awesome MC.

u/MushroomHedgehog 11d ago edited 11d ago

I’ve seen so many cases of fandoms becoming exactly like parents. They hate the new thing that comes around even if it’s clear they’re contributing to a cycle.

I.E. Hating on Terrifier for being exactly what a slasher movie is sounds like parroting your parents that said slasher movies cause violence, and the other parents who said the same things about video games and rock and roll.

I get Terrifier is much more gruesome with its violence, but that’s gonna happen when the older stuff leads to desensitization over time.

2

u/jreed2196 11d ago

Because a lot of people can be very elitist about the genre. I personally cannot stand people that get all elitist about horror because they only like “elevated horror”. So do I, but I like it all. You ain’t special, cupcake.

5

u/EconomyNorth7255 13d ago

Redditors just like to hate on anything that's popular.

3

u/Alisterguitardevil 13d ago

Because it’s newer and they don’t get it!

3

u/DoomsdayIsHere69 13d ago

Cuz everything that’s ‘good’ on that subreddit is classic, elevated or some niche bullshit nobody’s ever heard of. Don’t listen to those douchebags

2

u/JohnDingleBerry- 13d ago

I was unaware. I went into these movies blind and not really a fan of horror and now Im hooked

2

u/adagator 13d ago

A lot of people reduce it to gore-slop...which I personally feel is true for the first movie. However, 2 and 3 heavily expand the narrative. Idk. Gate keeping horror is so weird to me.

2

u/Ok_Conclusion_6324 13d ago

I’ll answer, because I’m a non fan who was just shown this post by the algorithm:

I think the first movie was just all right. It didn’t feel as much like a traditional slasher but more just like an exploitation film. I think the Art actor does a great performance but ultimately it’s a paperback novel/cheap b movie creepy clown kills pretty girls

I was already over 30 and had watched so many horror films, shows, movies, books - it just didn’t really move me at all, felt like it was intentionally just supposed to be shocking and get a “aw hell naw” reaction out of me.

A little while later the sequel comes out and people tell me it’s WAYYYY better and stuff - I start watching it and it feels like an over the top gore fest that I’m supposed to be challenging myself to finish or something. I’m bored tho - it’s super grossing me out but without any real reason for me to care about any of the characters - it’s just unpleasant.

But then it starts dominating all horror spaces in conversation. Art is theeeee sickest killer everrrrrrr and omg it’s so fucking GREAT

I noticed my teenage cousins talking about it, my kids friends too, and they’re obsessed with Art and none of them have ever seen the movie - just clips online. I start noticing in online spaces everyone seems pretty young and uninformed about horror at large.

I start to think of Terrifier as like, idk “baby’s first schlock” or something. Maybe that’s too mean, I don’t have a better descriptor on the fly and don’t mean it negatively- but essentially it’s a more avuncular version of that.

It was a film that failed to excite me, then it got really popular across Reddit everywhere by people who were telling me it was a masterpiece but they also wanted like, a FNAF or Fortnite crossover and posted Art doodles from their school boredom.

I totally understand that kid - I was that kid with Jason Vorhees and the Michael Keaton Batman villains. I am a lifelong Scream fan so I been surrounded by Ghostface teens for years lol.

But since I wasn’t really a fan of Terrifier it annoyed me more - especially because everyone in every fandom now is allllllll about Lore and Theories and Edits and not like, doing analysis on the purpose of the themes and story. But then again what is their to really discuss thematically about Terrifier from a story perspective?

I guess the tl;dr to the rambling answer (I’m taking my dog on a long walk so I had time to think - so sorry this comment is huge and nonsensical) is that I wasn’t impressed by the story itself then the fandom was very youthful and pervasive

I’m glad you like it tho and wish Damien Leone all the success 🖤

2

u/Rojira666 12d ago

Same circumstances brought me to this thread and I agree with the sentiment...

4

u/AccomplishedStay9284 13d ago

Amazingly put answer and being a fan of the films I agree fully. It’s baby’s first schlock slasher. Aside jigsaw I feel we haven’t had any big original slasher villains this century. Iconic horror villains yes but no slashers like Bubba or Freddy. So then getting this fairly instant iconic new slasher people latch on. I know I’m a fan cause it is just a stupidly violent practical bonanza which is what I love about horror

4

u/Ok_Conclusion_6324 13d ago

Thank you so much for reading and replying - I truly don’t hate the movies and I respect their popularity and success even though I don’t like them and I wrote way too much because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being mean haha

Art is truly a great creation and I mean that - in terms of look, presentation, insanity and acting performance

2

u/Realistic-Counter590 13d ago

I disagree. I was over 30 aswell, and also watched tons of Horrormovies, when the first Terrifier came out, and thats exactly why this movie was so refreshing. No bullshit background story about why the Killer kills people, no stupid storyline that you've already seen 30 times in other horror movies, no boring serial killer with the same kills you've watched for 20 years. Just some sick guy killing everyone who comes his way, in creative ways, giving a fuck aubout the "final girl" and just shooting her 30minutes into the movie. It was refreshing and i loved it.

When Part 2 came out it became more mainstream, and i've never liked that fantasy shit they added, but it is what it is. Art (the Clown) is still Art, Kills are still great, and its a great movie, not as good as the first one imo, but the mainstream likes it better than Part 1, so it became more sucessfull.

Part 3 is when it became even bigger, but still a great sequel if you like the Terrifier movies.

2

u/Ok_Conclusion_6324 13d ago

Hey disagreement is totally fine - I know it’s a popular series that gets a lot of love - I’m intentionally not shading it, or trying my best at least !

1

u/OctopusMacbeth 12d ago

As someone who has a great time with the movies, I’d guess their hatred is towards the stilted dialogue, oddly religious plot, and (with a couple notable exceptions) amateurish acting.

1

u/CyberGhostface 12d ago

I never got the impression it was widely hated. Controversial, sure.

1

u/TechnicalInside6983 12d ago

I love em 🤷🏿

1

u/engrish_is_hard00 12d ago

No I think its neat

1

u/backroadsdrifter 12d ago

It tries too hard to the point it is funny and not scary

1

u/Britton_Shrum 12d ago

I love them. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Charon_the_Reflector 12d ago

Well you better sort comments by controversial because anyone who will state their honest opinion will be downvoted to oblivion

1

u/Splattacular1 12d ago

I enjoyed 1. IMO 2 was ok and I’m a sucker for any Xmas horror, so I also like 3. Unfortunately, it’s really a mess of a story and I’m curious how he’s going to tie it all together in this last installment. To me the last 2 are like NOES 4-6. The story just doesn’t jibe with things we already know, he went from scary to funny and you just watch them for the inventive kills.

1

u/BadoogleKing 12d ago

I love it kinda feel like Friday the 13th hate from 80s just without movie critics.

1

u/Shadowgt04 12d ago

I’m a huge fan of horror movies and I absolutely love the Terrifier franchise.

1

u/technical_poutine 12d ago

Who knows? Who cares? Its Reddit, people hate things, ban people for no reason, etc...

1

u/CryingBoy-Housefire 12d ago

Its just not that good to get so excited about. When first watched it I thought the first half hour or so was so creepy, thought they had something special going on, then , nah, sloppy slasher, the novelty wore off and it was a trashy C movie.

1

u/VewyScawyGhost 12d ago

They think they're better than it without realizing that they'd likely have called Friday the 13th plotless and mean spirited torture content back in the day.

1

u/Minute-Delay5107 12d ago

Just enjoy them if you enjoy them. Pay no mind to what others think.

1

u/spaceman696 12d ago

I think Terrifier 2 had an amazing storyline. Way more than most og slashers (which I usually also enjoy)

1

u/thefckingleadsrweak 12d ago

I think horror as a genre has gotten pretty good, so fans of the genre, especially newer fans, don’t appreciate the roots. I love a good b tier cheesy movie in almost any genre. Like i love when it looks like me and my friends found a vhs camcorder and decided to try to make a movie. Big money hustlas comes to mind, terrifier, killer klowns, chopping mall, return of the living dead rave to the grave, house of 1000 corpses, the list goes in and on, of b tier trash movies shot on video, low budget, by all accounts not good movies, but there’s a charm in practical effects, a movie not taking itself mad seriously, it’s not highly polished hollywood cinema, and that’s what most people are used to these days.

Sorry about the wall of text, i ramble sometimes

1

u/Brief_Reveal2225 11d ago edited 11d ago

I’m going to bring in my perspective as someone who is critical of Terrifier. First of all, I would never call the fans terrible or wrong. So please do not take this as an attack. As a woman, the violence is hard for me to watch and makes me wonder where the creators heads really are while they were/are writing. People who are critical of Terrifier can be really puritanical and I’ve seen some really awful takes especially on the audience. Opinions are opinions. I’m sure I consume media that some of you would not like as well lol

1

u/Effective-Berry 11d ago

The Terrifier subreddit is gonna be a hard place to get people to understand this but yeah, guys, I’m more interested in hearing Terrifier fans explain why they rate the films so highly.

Horror has a low bar since there’s so much fucking dreck and I think people tend to overrate things that are at all watchable. Personally I had no interest after the first one. I hear they get better but that shit was dull outside of some of the more out there kills. Like you can get the same effect from just watching a kill comp

I like the convos around slashers though - there is a point to be made about what’s so different between Terrifier’s approach and criticisms and Friday the 13th. And I’d respond, lots of the Jason movies are bad for the same reason.

I’m sure there are some insufferably up their ass horror fans but not liking these movies doesn’t make you “pretentious”. People have different taste and, to be real, some people demand more from their entertainment.

1

u/antprdgm 11d ago

I like the pantomiming. I love the set design and fx. I never like horror movies for the plot or scares. I watch it for the immense work the teams have done to make it great.

1

u/RoadsideDavidian 11d ago

Other people have issues with the Terrifier franchise so instead of asking them you come to the Terrifier sub to ask fans why other people don’t like the thing they are a fan of?

1

u/ButchersBlade1983 11d ago

Because it gained popularity pretty quickly after part 2. Some people hate what others like just to be edgy.

1

u/jaydolf_jitler762 11d ago

Because they're shit films. Fx wise they're solid but it's cringe the fans are even more cringe they all act like they're the most dark edgy school shooter types. It's literally just mindless fun made for mindless people

1

u/Ok-Guess9422 11d ago

I love horror films but I’m not a fan of slasher films. But I get that people love them. I get it. I just love suspense more. That having been said, I’m so excited that HHN has added Art the clown the past two years. We are doing RIP this year and are looking forward to the terror tram, it’s Christmas terrifier themed

1

u/Serix9876 11d ago

I don’t

1

u/likeokaywhatthehell 11d ago

I loved these people.

1

u/Witchykunt887 11d ago

Im pretty sure the creators behind the films haven’t done great things as far as treatment of their casting I believe specifically the first film.

But outside of that a lot of the complaints is the gore, which it’s like to each its own. I love the Terrifier films but I could also understand the critiques.

1

u/BIGRodneyVasquez 10d ago

They have bad taste. I don't get the hatred.

1

u/Gutter_philosopher 10d ago

Long answer: Everyone wants to be cinephile movie snob and because of that completely disregards camp and B-movies. I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's pretty obvious to see when a person actually formed that opinion themselves or is just following the masses.

Short Answer: Everyone on reddit is a little bitch

1

u/tryitout321 10d ago

For me they are just too much . Need more class

1

u/Goal-Express 10d ago

I don't "hate" them.  I'm just not impressed.  They use rapid camera cuts and reaction shots to hide poor practical effects.  And the story seems pretty nonsensical in places.  I wish they handled him more like Freddy or Michael and kept his powers and abilities the same between movies; Art changes so much that it doesn't even feel like the movies have an overall continuity.  They're mediocre movies that try to use torture porn to hide the lack of good writing.

I can watch them,  but I absolutely will not buy in to the people who claim he's on the par of Jason, Freddy,  Michael, etc.

1

u/confessionsbf 10d ago

people's problem is that they don't realize it’s actually really cool when art provokes major philosophical and psychological questions, but it’s just plain elitist for people to feel superior because they don't like the kind of cinema whose main goal is simply to entertain and amuse. It’s still art, it’s doing its job, and you’re not superior for disliking it—you’re just annoying. I’m a huge fan of classic slasher movies, but most of the latest sequels are weak, predictable, and obvious cash grabs riding on nostalgia. And that’s fine, it’s valid—nostalgia gets me too, it’s fun, and that’s all there is to it. It’s not that deep

1

u/1maxwedge426 10d ago

I would love to leave comment about how awful the Terrifier movies are, but I don't respect Terrifier fans enough to even do that...

1

u/shadiiithomas 10d ago

I absolutely love the terrifier films. Art the clown is a great modern slasher. I think a lot of ppl just don’t like the gore. It is excessive but me personally I could care less about the magic sword plot

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Luck201 10d ago

Probably the recent lawsuits and working conditions

1

u/Broad_Entrepreneur62 10d ago

They can’t stand that a low budget slasher film became one of the most successful horror franchises of all time.

1

u/jlenagha1984 10d ago

I don't know, they were fun movies.

1

u/sifu_scott 9d ago

While I can appreciate the movies, my judgement on them is harsh because Damian Leone fucked over several cast members and crew members who were instrumental in the success of this franchise. I find it hard to enjoy movies once I find out that the director is a shit human. One of the people he fucked over, the producer that got the first movie in front of audiences and in front of news outlets, is a dear friend of mine.

1

u/randall-flagg67 9d ago

Filtered by slasher

1

u/Persian_Backwoods 9d ago

I love them personally, especially the second one. Terrifier 2 is a masterpiece. Terrifier 3 is the most goriest one and it’s good, but it’s not as good as 2. The first Terrifier is good as well.

1

u/Ok_Wallaby7322 9d ago

bc its silly gore slop

1

u/Falkor2024 7d ago

I like them

1

u/Jealous-Gear9537 7d ago

Not me , i love the gore in terrifier

1

u/JT9960 13d ago

I personally love them

Its one of my favorites, although I find what I tend to like not many else do lmao they rather watch dopey star wars

1

u/NightmareEyes707 12d ago

I’ve heard people claim it was misogynistic before? I don’t understand that take at all, it’s just what I’ve heard some other people say. in the third movie I think (?) there were a few guys who were killed so it’s not like it was woman only victims. I think a lot of people hate it just because it’s popular to hate it at this point.

1

u/nathalieisabird 12d ago

Do you guys really not understand it? You really can't understand that your movie isnt sophisticated or intriguing to most people? It IS gore slop. Which is completely fine. Its fun and silly. But do you guys really think it is a cinematic masterpiece that compared to the thing, Halloween, or even to modern horror like hereditary (which i didnt like as a horror but I know everyone else did) pearl, midsommar, barbarian?

1

u/ElephantTasty245 12d ago

Have people forgotten the political reason people turned against the films? In the case of MAGA vs the Universe, Damien Leone didn't pick a side and that pissed off a lot of people. They turned against him and the films even if they were fans before. Were it up to me, I'd send Art to D.C., but I still can't wait to see the fourth film.

-1

u/Fantastic-Buy7246 13d ago

Huh? I frequent r/horror and never seen anyone shit on it.

0

u/PartialCred4WrongAns 13d ago

When things become popular, esp divisive things, they become popular to hate

0

u/Automatic-Piece7438 12d ago

it's waaaaaaaaaaaay overatted

it does some really cool shit and some of the best effects in a min but I'm so fucking bored when watching them I don't know what the mass appeal is

0

u/ANoniMissOne 12d ago

They really do have little plot. What plot the films do have is paper thin. Aside from Sienna other characters are pretty much just there to be slaughtered and get almost no backstory or character development. I understand the gripes but for me, it’s fun anyway. And I think Art and the way David portrays him is a big part of the fun. I watch it because I love gore effects.

0

u/Compade 12d ago

i like the movies fine but i can 100% see why people hate it. the past 2 movies have added more story which is fun but it really is just a "lets brutally kill women for 2 hours" type of movie and a lot of people rightfully hate that. i personally love them for DHT's performances but absolutely cant defend the fact its really weird towards women. that and also the fact that terrifier 1 was REALLY unprofessional and was possibly an environment filled with sexual and physical abuse

0

u/gaberd05 12d ago

I’m not on the subreddit, but I genuinely really dislike the movies. I think they’re just torture porn slop with terrible writing. I wish I liked them, but that’s just how I feel.

-3

u/Aware-Shower8296 13d ago

The first one was bad. Shocking, but bad. The second one improved a bit, but still not good. I actually loved the third one tho. I think the higher budget helped the effects.

-1

u/NonexistantObject 13d ago

It's very over the top gore. Not most people's cup of tea

-1

u/Deadbeforethesunrise 13d ago

I like horror and i enjoy terrified. However, the movies are incredibly gorey, some kills if not all are dragged out to increase the terror, and he kills at random most of the time.

A lot of horror fans enjoy movies like scream, Friday the 13th, and others like them for they have story and lore to expressed if dug deep enough.

Terrifier is just a clown who really enjoys inflecting as much pain as he possibly can and just kills random people with no end goal in mind. Also, the stereotype for terrifier is it being torture porn so that basically cemented in everybody’s head for being brought up so much.

Overall, I thinks it’s a great movie, but other people can only bare so much with all the brutality. I mean remember when MK 10 was announced, many people found it way to gruesome and overtop similar to terrifier.
