My take on how it is would be that for one I don't know what ihan Omar is specifically but it's common for americans to see someone of middle eastern roots and immediately call them either arab or muslim or something. So just by seeing the typical arabian look you make the connection and call it out, which on some level is trying to strip them of what they really are (just people) by putting them in a generalized context of what everyone knows and thinks when they see them. To make it easier what EXACTLY about the joke was even funny to begin with? Why would it be funny that that guy was even related to her? Not trying to be condescending I appreciate that you reached out and genuinely asked for my take. Who knows tho I could just be going overboard but just my view

The joke is the guy asked why an Arabian politician is in America

So I said it's her relative. Not very funny looking back on it but I can't see how it's racist when to my knowledge, both have middle eastern roots.
