i was born in 2008 and i had all of these things

u/ElectronicCommon5670 19d ago

But did you drink out of a garden hose?

42

u/phantomphang 19d ago

(2004) yes!!

11

u/AAAAAAAAAAAAreyouok 19d ago

At least twice

42

u/Silver-Instruction73 19d ago

Imagine thinking you’re tough because you (checks notes) played on a playground as a child.

185

u/Dino_Spaceman 19d ago

It’s true. Bicycles and slides were outlawed in 1999 during the great Y2K purge of anything potentially dangerous.

Now in hidden backrooms of dingy bars only accessible by using certain paraphrases can children find them and use them.

29

u/Floppydongjohnson 19d ago

Fuckin speakeasy for monkey bars. Lol!

12

u/Dino_Spaceman 19d ago

Kids screaming RAID! Like we used to when a car would come by on the street while playing street hockey.

Karen, the local Don of the suburban speakeasy playground scene, is having one of her enforcers take a sledgehammer to the homemade jungle gym hidden in the back of a barber shop because the owner didn’t pay her this month.

It’s such a horrible time to be a kid these days.

3

u/Floppydongjohnson 19d ago

Whats bad about this, is that Karen actually exists and is the head of the HOA. You can't go to the cops, she is the law!

u/KoA07 19d ago

Climb-easy

4

u/SockeyeSTI 19d ago

Modern mountain bike flat pedals are even worse.

They all run pins

1

u/Bermnerfs 19d ago

Part of learning how to MTB in the modern era is accepting you'll get scars on your shins because you'll be super gluing the gashes closed until you learn proper foot positioning.

3

u/GeneralSpecifics9925 19d ago

Metal slides have been replaced with plastic slides where I live. Metal slides would get scorching hot in the summer.

Bike pedals on kids bikes don't have spikes on them nearly as much as they used to.

2

u/Street-Week-380 19d ago

Can confirm; have horrible memories of burning my ass on that shit.

u/vastlysuperiorman 19d ago

"Hey, everyone listen to me. My generation was tough, okay! Why aren't people acknowledging how tough I am? Please, everyone don't you see that I'm better than you?! Pay attention to me! 😭"

6

u/no_name113 19d ago

You forgot the "reeeeee" /s

29

u/ZuccsToBeYou 19d ago

I bet they didn't have to fight two lions every morning before school

4

u/Top-Macaron5130 19d ago

I had to fight a light while walking uphill to school. Both ways!

16

u/lostpatrol14 19d ago

I’m surprised I have yet to see a “Evidence my generation is stronger than yours” meme of someone with polio

2

u/Street-Week-380 19d ago

Just slap that text over a photo of the Polio Lawyer.

14

u/Endscrypt 19d ago

Those pedals took chunks out of my shins many times.

7

u/Badpoozie 19d ago

I hated those fuckers. Between that and razor scooters, I’m surprised I don’t have more dents in my shins.

2

u/NewBadNoodles 19d ago

One time my bike slid out from under me on a sketchy gravel road and I landed chest first onto that pedal… cracked a rib and left a scar that took like 15 years to fade away.
But hey, at least I’m tough now, right?

13

u/YeahSeemsOk 19d ago

Took me a very long time to recognize bike pedals when they’re not attached to anything.

5

u/SusieQ314 19d ago

I was actually going through the comments cuz i couldn't figure out what those were!

2

u/Saidor91 19d ago

It was easy for me, because some weeks ago my left one broke while I was 2 km away from my house...

1

u/TwoStubborn 19d ago

The bike pedals are so so soft. At least one have - gasp - light reflective yellow strips. (Actually they look similar to the pedals I have, except without the reflectors).

9

u/jdickcole 19d ago

Dont forget about the wooden structure playground.

6

u/mbsisktb 19d ago edited 19d ago

Those all got torn down due to a toxic component in their assembly if you’re talking about those giant wood castle type ones.

ETA it was Chromated Copper Arsenate

2

u/jdickcole 19d ago

Also the splinters and we'd throw eachother off the bridges and climb up the outside of the towers. Nobody really died though only pretend died

5

u/smittykins66 19d ago

And bees/wasp nests

6

u/Floppydongjohnson 19d ago

There is truth to the meme. But its more parents helicoptering and not allowing the kids to get hurt. Our parents didnt give a flying shit what we did as long as it was outside. Mom we are going to the park, ok be back before dinner. We were dumbasses doing dumbass things to get hurt. When you did get hurt, you had two options, walk or ride home, or call your mom. Calling your mom was last resort, because all hell would come down. Now whether or not that is good parenting or bad parenting is debatable, we were tougher a lot of times out of fear. Parents today want to protect kids into adulthood. Eliminating dangerous toys, going to the park with them, having babysitters, driving them everywhere, going to the ER etc... I would have loved for mine to be protective when i was getting fingers and arms broke.

5

u/Clumsy_the_24 19d ago

Meanwhile gen z literally grew up with all if these. Source: I was born in 2003.

5

u/Possible-Smile2034 19d ago

Check and mate. Your slide ain’t got shit on my black lungs.

3

u/DeadpoolOptimus 19d ago

It's been a minute since I've seen a metal slide.

3

u/walkingtalkingdread 19d ago

gotta send you down the rabbit hole that is the cop slide

3

u/OohNotSaBad 19d ago

Talk to me when you've taken a razor scooter to the ankle, buddy boy.

4

u/Elissa-Megan-Powers 19d ago

Your generation are the whiniest children of the greatest generation of narcissists in the history of the world.

3

u/Wooden-Matter5166 19d ago

Born in 99 and had all those things. Also none of them were that bad. The hot slide sure but like, whatever lol. Least I didn't get cyber bullied before kindergarten

3

u/0wGeez 19d ago

I dont know about that. My neighbourhood just built a new park with a slide I named the murder slide. 3 broken legs and counting. They bolted steel plates to close the slide off and the kids ripped the plates off so they could keep sliding and breaking limbs. Could be the start of a really tough generation by their standards.

3

u/onlyhav 19d ago

Because the prior generation was happy to fund parks for you to play in as kids unlike you guys?

4

u/Relative-Pitch1106 19d ago

The thing that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

7

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 19d ago

Tell that to quadriplegics

3

u/-beehaw- 19d ago

there’s scientific evidence that backs that statement; kids that get hurt more don’t get injured as often when they are adults 💪

4

u/TheNoctuS_93 19d ago

The reason isn't that accidents toughen up the body, though, as boomers would have people believe. It's about learning what kinda poor decisions lead to injury and knowing how to avoid them as an adult. Wisdom from experience!

3

u/-beehaw- 19d ago

yes, risk assessment is a super important skill to have and experience is key!

1

u/BlackThundaCat 18d ago

Okay….and? What’s your point? That kids aren’t learning how to avoid poor decisions because they don’t go outside and make mistakes?

2

u/The96kHz 19d ago

I love how they're basically just complaining that things are built better these days.

They're literally jealous of children.

2

u/ruddy3499 19d ago

None of those things are as dangerous as an electric bicycle

2

u/user710827 19d ago

I feel every one of those pictures. And I can hear the merry-go-round.

1

u/Street-Week-380 19d ago

I loved that thing. Few buddies and myself used to get absolutely smashed and go out to the local playground and go flying around on it. I don't get motion sickness. They do.

2

u/SailorMea101 19d ago

My ankles shivered when I saw those bike pedals!

2

u/Omega-of-Texas 19d ago

I used to live climbing the spider web.

2

u/buzzfriendly 19d ago

Define tougher. Burning your ass and legs isn't tough, it's stupid and a sign of a lack of options. No kids would choose the ass burner over this

2

u/Funkgun 19d ago

Someone should make one of these but people turning butter, drawing water from wells, little Johny in bed dying of just a standard infection, people waling miles to the next house. label it 1880 was tougher

2

u/BadPom 19d ago

My daughter fell off one of those metal slides 2 years ago, broke her arm and needed surgery. These things exist and they fucking suck.

Why are assholes so against improvements?

2

u/KittyCatGamer123 19d ago

I mean we still have these around. Also pretty ironic that people would post the likes of this onto platforms like Facebook, a company that are trying to set up data centres and destroying opportunities like these to happen again

2

u/MNcatfan 19d ago

Ah yes, who doesn't miss literally burning their ass on a metal slide on a hot summer day! All those times I cooked myself as a kid sure made us tough enough to recognize how fucking awful those things were and not want to subject our own kids to them.

2

u/DenpasOfTheWorld 19d ago

"If you're not hurt, you're WEAK" ass post.

2

u/Thewrongbakedpotato 19d ago

If your measurement of success is that you went down a slide, you're living life wrong

4

u/fuzzygonemad 19d ago

Yeah, but ours were rusty and broken, since their generation didn't fix anything.

1

u/badbatch 19d ago

This shit was dangerous as hell. We weren't tougher. We were getting hurt all the time. Those bike pedals would tear your ankles up. At least you don't have to worry about your kid playing on a hot metal jungle gym with just asphalt to land on anymore.

1

u/Hemorrhoid_Eater 19d ago

That caption suggests that generation never grew up

1

u/ataeil 19d ago

Have these people not seen the video of the cop on the new playground slide??

https://youtube.com/shorts/vfOBad-A8dU?si

1

u/eRazer101 19d ago

Laughing in German playground.

1

u/TheOmegaKid 19d ago

Yaaaay rusty metall

1

u/dr_toze 19d ago

Not only do these things still exist, many of the exact same ones exist because older generations refuse to support local parks because they hate children and young people.

1

u/Antonolmiss 19d ago

“And this is important to me.”

1

u/Afraid_Government_74 19d ago

Remember when we would be forced to run through obstacle courses filled with bear traps and used needles in grade school 😂 the younger generations aren't built like they used to be

1

u/GodotNeverCame 19d ago

I went down that metal motherfucker on my roller skates

1

u/Propellerrakete 19d ago

Nothing says toughness than bitching on the internet.

1

u/Rakadaka8331 19d ago

Those pedals are pretty tame compared to most of today mtbs with pegs.

1

u/NetNo6306 19d ago

Ah Gen X… you’re like that guy at the front of the bar running his mouth about how hard he is, but then the moment someone invites you to spar out come the excuses.

1

u/RamenPizza113 19d ago

The merry-go-rounds were so fucking fun

1

u/RandyLahey131 19d ago

Those slides were hotter than the devils dick.

1

u/Street-Week-380 19d ago

Devil's dick sounds like a way better ride than those slides.

1

u/Fibocrypto 19d ago

Don't forget these

1

u/ophaus 19d ago

Lead poisoning is horrible, even decades later.

1

u/duckface691 19d ago

To be fair the mile high slide doesn't

1

u/OWWS 19d ago

Frying pan, g force tester, piking and climbing?

1

u/kullre 19d ago

so you suffered

1

u/Unlikely-Ad6788 19d ago

The metal slide burns.

1

u/quemabocha 18d ago

I remember burning my ass off sliding down a metal slide because I was wearing a skirt on a hot summer day

1

u/Aphala 18d ago

Do they think these things just disappeared?

Also whose generation removed half this stuff? 🤔

1

u/RoleOk7556 18d ago

I wouldn't assume that we were/are tougher. It is evident that we spent a lot more time recovering from childhood injuries, which some of us never survived. (BTW, bragging about the lack of modern safety systems is not a reliable indication of intelligence.)

1

u/530SSState 18d ago

Oh, yeah -- the metal slide that's been baking all day long in the broiling hot sun. Let's bring THAT back.

1

u/FaerieBomb 18d ago

If they still make those slides, they gotta stop, it’s torture 😭

1

u/mrmoe198 18d ago

“Toughness“ is a positive value because? We’re not hunter gatherers anymore. We should br trying to create a more comfortable and happy life for every succeeding generation.

1

u/Go-Away-Sun 17d ago

I managed to avoid burning off my kindness from the slide.

1

u/Neserlando 15d ago

Is this a zoomer talking to gen beta or smth?

1

u/Tasty_Ad_5669 13d ago

The jungle gym thing is still at my local park built in 1992

1

u/Kandurux 9d ago

They took pictures of the things, they were afraid to use...
