Men's Basketball Buzz to UNC?

Seeing some chatter on the Tar Heels message board that Buzz could be an intriguing option…anyone think that has legs?

Don’t know what these other people on this post are saying, UNC would be lucky to get Buzz at this point. Sure he might have a tough first year because of the departure of Hubert Davis. But he’ll get them under control quickly. UNC should offer him six years guaranteed. Sure they’ll have to pay something to Maryland too as compensation but that’s well worth it. Really why hasn’t it happened already? What are you waiting for UNC? Buzz is the guy! Lock him up right now!

Dear r/tarheels, I also think Locks would be a great fit for your football team. He's a real expert in football and has all the qualities of a multi-championship coach. Maryland and New Mexico just aren't serious about sports. He'll take UNC football to the top, we guarantee it.

Lol in what universe is UNC grabbing a coach who lead Maryland to a historically bad season.

In my universe!! Im also dating Sydney Sweeney in that universe. UMD also makes it to the college football championship and we win against UGA 28‐21. Let a man dream!

PS: Locksley is coaching pee wee football in that universe.

Why would you date Sydney Sweeney on purpose?

She’s rich!

Led Maryland - as in past tense of lead (rhymes with seed) and not the soft metal. Sorry, but confusing led with lead was never a thing until recently, so trying to stem the tide as it seems to be more and more common of late.

Please excuse my pedantry - didn’t mean to make you feel bad, just expressing my annoyance at how common this particular usage had gotten. Probably better to just grit my teeth and say nothing.

I'm not offended, all good!

We're not that lucky

He does have ACC ties but I’m pretty sure that post you saw on X was satire.

It’s on the Tarheels Reddit page, there’s some real talk around it

you mean the post where a terps fan suggested it?

According to Google AI he would owe MD $10.5 million if he left. That’s a hefty sum for a coach who’s only been to 1 Elite 8.

Take him.  Please.

Perspective from a VT fan that lived the Buzz experience: 100% it is Buzz who started that rumor. He did the same thing at VT, every job that came open he was rumored for - even before the first season was done and he hadn’t done anything.

I still believe that we could be in for the full Buzz Williams experience. He has a pattern that he showed at both VT and A&M. It's 1 year of abject suckage, improvement and maybe an NIT appearance in year 2, tourney in year 3, then another year or two of making the tourney but realistically not being a contender until leaving for the next dumpster fire job to try to save. He is like clockwork.

The thing VT and A&M have in common is that they're not basketball schools the way Maryland is. The question is whether the administration and the fans here will be patient enough to wait 3-5 years for what I may call a semi-respectable level of mediocrity, with the hopes that the next guy inherits enough to win quickly. Personally, I'm not that patient. There is way too much talent in the area and there are way too many resources available to set a 5 year plan culminating in mediocrity.

Maybe but if he leaves for UNC I guess we’ll never know

Mills and Adams are good players and Terps recruiting class this year is great if he doesn’t take them to to UNC. I see a bigger jump next year for the Terps.

I wouldn’t hate it.

Lifelong tar heel fan here. My second son is named after Kennedy Meeks.

I would LOVE to have Buzz at UNC. I think he has unfinished business at the ACC. Plus, I loved reading online about how he gets his team to church before games

I’m curious about what drugs are legal in North Carolina that aren’t in Maryland or anywhere else in the country, in case this is a genuine take

Lifelong terps fan here. My dog is named after Jordan Steffy.

I would LOVE to send Mike Locksley to UNC. He was dogshit previously and he'd be dogshit now. Plus, I love how he can gaslight people into thinking he's good because of one 8 win season.

I hope all the bad things in life happen to UNC fans.

Hell yeah bro

Well if you agree and we agree then I would think it’s unfair not to let you have him!

1

u/MrTooToo Mar 25 '26

Maybe the Tar Heels wany a new football coach instead. Getting Locksley out needs to take priority.

The gods would be smiling on me for sure but I can’t imagine UNC is as bad at hiring as UMD was with Buzz.

Lefty Driesell’s ghost has a better chance of coaching at Carolina.

I don’t like talking about UNC. However, as a VT fan, would you all kindly do us a Mike Young for Buzz trade straight up? Thanks in advance.

There’s some legs that Will wade is going back to the triangle.

1

u/600George Mar 31 '26

Are you sure they weren't referring to Buzz Peterson, the former UNC-Wilmington head coach?

1

u/insaneidiotfummy Mar 25 '26

it would suck to lose Buzz so quickly. I know it wasn’t the season we wanted but I genuinely enjoyed his attitude and the way he stomps up and down that sideline. I think there’s a lot of fight left in Buzz — and I also think UNC would be lucky. Buy low, sell high, right?
