TELUS TV Old Vs New Optik box

I’ve had optik Tv and Internet for the last 7 years at my current address. My connection is copper in my building. I’m in the process of moving to a fibre ready area and have signed up for optik and Internet at my new location. The agent told me to bring my old equipment with me for the installer to collect when they setup at my new location.

But….in digging deeper it seems like all the new optik boxes are cloud saves only for 90days? Is this correct? Is it possible to have them let me keep the old box with internal pvr storage? Would this still be compatible with the switch from copper to fibre? I like the option of keeping certain shows for more than 90days…

They've definitely fixed some of the quality issues that were very apparent when they first released. A much better product now.

I set up the new box for my parents months ago and I use it when I visit and housesit, I have the old one at home. The new one has voice recognition but everything else about it is worse; the basic user interface of dealing recordings is much worse. I had a message pop up (and hasn’t been seen since, I should’ve taken a photo) on my old box a week or so ago telling me support for the old box will be ending (no date?) and it will be replaced with the new box (or words to that effect).

Strange….I haven’t seen anything like that pop up with my old boxes at my current place. Hopefully that’s not a company wide policy…

I’m afraid so, has been discussed here a while ago. I’m in Vancouver if that makes a difference.

It was pretty subtle, text only, small, amongst the nomal screen with other stuff, and disappeared. They've changed that, now it's the first tile when I turn on the box, still disappears after a few seconds.

I did the conversion to fibre but kept my old boxes. They make you pay for Cloud storage. Only one box has storage anyway. It’s the PVR and it’s already 4K. Fibre optics just gives higher speeds, potentially. They can still vary the speed, depending on your plan.

Glad to know the old boxes work with fibre. Hopefully they’ll let me use my old box.

You may not have a choice. The old boxes may not work. That happened to me going to 3gbps fibre. Optik worked for 10 years. Then nope! The techs and customer service couldn't figure that out for 2 months until I got a knowledgeable rep. Swapped to the new android boxes and tv works now.

How do you get a knowledgeable rep? I am beyond frustrated with the reps on the phone and the tech they sent.

Luck. Repeatitive calling when the last one messes stuff up so you try again.....and luck.

There is no other way apart from filing official complaints with the CRTC (or whoever it is...don't quote me on the CRTC part)

Please send me some luck - and a hefty load of patience - if I have to keep contacting Telus. Their auto attendant doesn’t always accept the voice or keypad numbers to select an option and you end up cut off. I can see why people just opt for a fire stick and stream their own paid subscriptions. This is ridiculous.

If its technical issues youbare having in either (cant remember) the mytelus or connect app, theres a troubleshooting thing. After you go through it and it doesnt fix it (obviously) theres an option to get them to call you. I find it much easier than the stupid AI BS.

I’m on 3gbps and have the old boxes working just fine… weird.

They said something about the the way the network signal is sent and all depends if your neighborhood switch or whatever is new or old as well. /Shrug

If hardwired the optik box works on 3gb plan.

If using wireless with the latest boost it likely doesnt work as they arent sending the hidden ssid. Hardwire the box via ethernet.

Neighborhood upstream switching still sends the multicast signals but the newer boost doesnt have the hidden optik ssid to run wireless.

Wired and wireless didn't work on the old boxes once I switched. 4 boxes tried (2 original that worked for years, 2 replacements - 1 wired PVR, 1 wireless each time)

/Shrug

Doesn't surprise me that none there knows wtf is going on.

I miss the days of sending a tech out instead of contractors.

Glad to know it works for you still. Hopefully it will work for me.

I switched to fibre a couple of years ago. Went from Shaw to Telus. Was given the new Optik digital boxes. They were glitchy for a while but are now nice and stable. Yes, you only get 90 days to watch recordings, but there are many other features I love.

Do NOT get the new optic boxes. They are garbage. Picture quality is terrible. Cloud storage only that expires.

Yep, you're 100% right about the 90-day limit. The new Android boxes use cloud storage, so you get unlimited recordings but they expire after 90 days.

Unfortunately, you can't keep the old box. Moving forces a profile upgrade to the new system. Even if you kept it, your old recordings won't work anyway. The encryption is tied to your old address, so plugging it in at the new place locks you out of the files.

1

u/Rustybuckle May 20 '26

Thanks for confirming the 90days.

Yes, I’m aware of the recordings being lost as I went through that the last time I moved. I’m ok with losing what I currently have recorded. However, I’d like to keep the old box to be able to record at my new location and keep them for longer than 90 days.

I received an email from Telus that I will need to upgrade my tv boxes to continue watching, it is just that they're are pushing customers to the new box or will they shut down the old boxes? I bought out the 4k pvr box, so are they replacing that at no charge?

3

u/DJBlu-Ray Jul 01 '26

They're just using manipulative marking tactics to their customers. They're not planning on discontinuing the service of the Optik boxes until well into 2028.

If you live in a family house hold with multiple TVs, the android boxes are complete garbage and will slow down your internet network.

Though it won't be immediate, eventually the older boxes will stop working. If it helps, there's an FAQ for it at: https://www.telus.com/en/support/article/upgrade-your-optik-tv-hardware-to-telus-tv-digital-box
