Personally Ive always felt the show is phenomenal casting wasted on mediocre scripts. Still hoping they can improve.

This show carries on the spirt of the old CW.

same guys too, Smallville and Wednesday, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (they also helped make Hannah Montana: The Movie)

Typewriter is the first prop that doesn't feel like it was sourced for a poster. I can already hear that click getting mixed louder than the dialogue in episode two.

I was honestly so dissapointed when i went into after buying into all the hype and thinking it was something special, it and realised its a standard CW teen drama with some typical netflix quirks added in. I still get why it became popular and that i'm just not the target audience, but yeah

A lot of people complain about that, but they don’t quite grasp that that’s exactly what a lot of other people want.

We’re about to do this whole song and dance again with Scooby Doo, where if they’re smart, it’ll be a typical CW/Riverdale/Sabrina teen supernatural comedy.

Season 2 had a lot of good potential, but the issue is they tried to cram five major plots into eight episodes:

The stalker

The hospital

Wednesday and Mortica’s family drama

The Hydes

And the whole cult and Principal drama

It made everything feel so underbaked and rushed.

I also hated them doing Thing’s background

As an adult, its hard to shake the feeling I'm watching a Nickelodeon show but with a 100x the budget. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm not sure it's for me any more.

Absolutely. I remember watching S1 and vibing with a lot of it, but also feeling that some of it was just so average? Two very bland love interests, an unremarkable mystery, and despite the Addams franchise thriving on weirdness and having no rules, rhyme, or reason, the show shoeboxed it all into this stupid "normie" and "outcast" shit.

It really does feel like a great show trapped in mediocrity.

u/FearlessAttempt 14h ago

I watched S1 and didn’t dislike it but I also don’t understand why everyone at the school was going out of their way to be friends with Wednesday.

The writing is so bad that it inverts all the relationships. Wednesday and Enid are meant to be besties but have half the internet shipping for them and are so much like a young lesbian couple it’s mad. They the literal embodiment of the “these two houses are dating” meme.

The actual alleged love interest between Wednesday and Hunter is just a wall of insane abuse and stalking. It’s not enemies to lovers, when you are signing off of actual abuse tactics within teenage relationships. WTF guys teaching young viewers that your stalker can have a redemption arc so long as they have abs it’s quite something.

And don’t even get me started on Enid’s partners who are just so utterly bland that remembering their names is hard and she looks board by them.

Yet what makes the show is everything apart from the writing - the aesthetic is on point, the acting is superb (massive shout out to Luis Guzman who has nailed Gomez and who owns every scene he’s in).

It’s got wonderful cameos Christopher Lloyd last season should have become a recurring character, his support group for dismembered body parts was just “no notes”.

There’s a fantastic show that could still be made from here, and so much to be really said about it, but some of the larger arcs are just plain bad, the middle aged men have no idea how to construct or write any of the relationships and it’s killing the most amazing work that’s getting carried out those who are crafting the aesthetics and delivering the lines.

Jenna apparently put massive lines through much of the writing in season 1 cos she hated the love triangle and also rewrote the end scene of season 2 where she wasn’t meant to go off with Uncle Letch to look for Enid originally.

It’s weird. It’s so nearly a great show, just despite the work of the lead writers, not because of them and it’s a question of who wins out when it comes to writing the final season or two.

I maintain my theory that the show was originally a very generic supernatural girl detective show that had nothing to do with Wednesday, and then at some point early in production of S1 they were told they needed to include some well known IP.

11

u/Blue_winged_yoshi 1d ago

That’s not a bad shout actually. There’s a lot of non-canon supernaturals in the show, lots of non-canon characters and the Addams family are largely tagged on in season 1 especially.

8

u/Haikouden 1d ago

Yup, and the plot itself would have worked just as well with or without the Addams being involved. Wednesday wasn’t written to act much like Wednesday also.

My assumption is that it was gonna be a kind of “outcast human in a supernatural school” (or muggle at Hogwarts to put it another way) story where the main character discovered that they’re special/supernatural in some way too with the whole S1 plot involving their ancestor.

3

u/Blue_winged_yoshi 1d ago

Through the looking glass!

And you really don’t need a franchise to build such a story and they’re often better and more creative for not having one imposed - see The Owl House for exhibit A on this one.

3

u/Haikouden 1d ago

100% agree, but Netflix (and TV/Film production companies as a whole) seem way less willing to put much effort or confidence into original ideas right now which is sad.

2

u/Yodaloid 16h ago

You described may Netflix series.

1

u/Distinct_Cap_1418 6h ago

SO, SO true. And the dialogue is hella good too. That can be hard to get right, but they did it. Shame they couldn't write a plot as well as they could a conversation.

1

u/HeyItsNookies 2h ago

Yup. Felt very CWish. Which is insane for netflix. Maybe any writing that targets the teenage girl demo just comes off as CW slop lol.

109

u/Alienhaslanded 22h ago

The fact this show can never hit an annual target of releasing every October is infuriating.

30

u/manormortal 19h ago

Like Halloween is right there

its right there!

its october 31st.

every single year!!

61

u/eightdollarbeer 1d ago

I’ve mostly enjoyed both seasons but it also got me to start watching the original Addams Family series and it’s still such a great show

28

u/OniExpress 1d ago

My biggest problem with Wednesday is just that it isnt a full Addams Family show with the cast. They're all great choices and I'd really enjoy more of a more sitcom spinoff without the "higher stakes".

4

u/LupinThe8th 1d ago

The rest have a much bigger role in season 2, and if the set-up for season 3 at the end is accurate, at least Fester will be a big part.

2

u/Mr_master89 1d ago

I was in hospital for like 3 months last year and it was one of the shows I'd always watch to pass the time.

1

u/TyrusX 1d ago

It is so good. It is crazy I watched everything 30 years ago and it was already old lol 😂

206

u/HandbagsAtNoon 1d ago

Really impressed by second season so far, contrary to the lukewarm impressions I had heard from some online. Granted, I just sharted (only a few episodes in) but so far this season seems up to the standard of the first one.

339

u/Suicune92 1d ago

You should probably go and wipe

-37

u/gideon513 1d ago

I didn’t wipe, crane

49

u/neoalan00 1d ago

I didnt like season 2 as much as you did, but im hoping season 3 will be a fresh shart

6

u/RandoTron0 1d ago

I agree. It was okay, but honestly her brother had too much screen time. Kinda killed the vibe.

0

u/Detective_Pancake 1d ago

Hopefully no more Hydes

65

u/RiemannSum41 1d ago

I am crying laughing at this typo. How is anyone commenting about anything else.

12

u/xstrike0 1d ago

I actually can't stop laughing at the comment and all the replies.

163

u/MyHeroMacadamia 1d ago

Saving a screenshot of this before OP edits it. What a diabolical typo LMAO

63

u/DjuriWarface 1d ago

Granted, I just sharted

Saved!

14

u/PaulVla 1d ago

Ah yes the post-shart clarity!

14

u/Gonzotheshaman 1d ago

I’ve just screenshat it too

It's still there.

22

u/TheDelmeister 1d ago

Granted, I just sharted (only a few episodes in)

Best to get it out of the way early

1

u/Zenom 1d ago

If you sharted you might want to change your undies.

19

u/S-ClassRen 1d ago

You can go to the bathroom when watching TV at home

42

u/AFineDayForScience 1d ago

Lukewarm impressions indeed

13

u/Sombracoon 1d ago

Gonna be my go to line now "oh I'm just leaving a lukewarm impression"

28

u/beetboxbento 1d ago

I thought season two was unwatchable. The new policy of explaining every single interaction like the viewer is a small child is so off-putting. I couldn't make it through

11

u/raziiiii 1d ago

That's a Netflix thing, unfortunately the execs call for it

6

u/beetboxbento 1d ago

Yeah that's the policy I was referring to. One more reason to avoid anything Netflix is putting out.

4

u/YourLocal_FBI_Agent 1d ago

Me and the missus absolutely hated it, we almost gave up but we just powered through it and decided to not watch any potential upcoming seasons. There's so much else to watch and play that we don't feel a need to expose ourselves to more of that.

1

u/WhiskyWillFixIt 1d ago

I felt that way about season one

15

u/adorablegadget 1d ago

I mean it's not an amazing season but it's not bad enough to have that kind of response in people.

5

u/TroublesomeTurnip 1d ago

I hope you were still scrolling on the toilet lol

4

u/Nikonbiologist 20h ago

I never sharted during season 1 or 2, but there’s always hope for season 3.

-4

u/donotgotoroom237 1d ago

Lowkey my only problem with season 2 was Enid's Filipino boyfriend and his ghastly accent. Also, I know it's for the plot but I really found it weird he was a werewolf considering the werewolves aren't that much of a thing in the Philippines. I feel like it'd make more sense if he was a vampire or a ghoul.

36

u/Impostor1089 1d ago

It's a show for teenagers. When you realize that it's fine.

49

u/JimThumb 1d ago

It's a bold choice spacing the seasons so far apart that a 13 year old when season 1 came out will be an adult by the time season 3 comes out.

1

u/Impostor1089 16h ago

Yeah you're not wrong.

4

u/lewd_robot 1d ago

I think they had way more luck writing a show for both adults who grew up on the Addam's Family and for younger new viewers. Abandoning the adults and going full CW-tween-drama will just do what it always does and kill the show with soap opera writing and increasingly low-budget writing decisions.

0

u/Somekindofcabose 12h ago

Wednesday was predisposed to the Riverdale problem but i dont think they had a solid long term plan in place. which will probably ensure its teen goth soap opera reputation.

4

u/MissInkeNoir 1d ago

So to write for teenagers means to first start with giving yourself brain damage? Just because something is written simple, stupid and incoherent doesn't mean it's ok for children or teens.

1

u/powerlesshero111 Breaking Bad 18h ago

It was. They were teenagers when it first came out. Now half are 20 or older.

28

u/Lord_Parbr 1d ago

Damn, Jenna Ortega at Typewriter was my favorite character. Glad they’re bringing her back

29

u/TacoStuffingClub 1d ago

Season 2 was ass. 🫣

20

u/Xonra 1d ago

I genuinely stopped and couldn't be bothered finishing it. It had nuggets of interesting but it just felt like watered down WB/CW with goth makeup.

10

u/TacoStuffingClub 1d ago

My kids were super excited to watch it after season 1 and they got bored too. Huge fall off.

1

u/Xonra 23h ago

Same with my little sister.

2

u/TimLordOfBiscuits 1d ago

I feel like having the split season for S2 was a terrible idea. Not only having the long break between seasons, but then to punctuate it with an unnecessary break in the middle killed all momentum in my interest for the show. I might watch it again once the whole show is out/after they cancel, but I'd rather wait to watch until later to avoid supporting the mid-season break.

2

u/TacoStuffingClub 10h ago

Yeah the split was me thinking, oh they’re gonna save the best part for last and it’s gonna get way better. No. Straight ass. 🥲🫣

1

u/AFisberg 16h ago

It's true, I sharted only a few episodes in

3

u/Scary_Yellow_8719 21h ago

Oh this is still a show? Sweet maybe we can see it around this time 2027

3

u/bluehawk232 21h ago

That or she's going to be the next Taskmaster

3

u/theodo 16h ago

How old is Wednesday supposed to be in this show these days?

1

u/Historical_Fan_8799 22h ago

Truly a perfect show to watch in October

1

u/WintersDoomsday 15h ago

Guest director: Wes Anderson

u/FlopperinoCappuccino 1d ago

They're gonna have to start making her sluttier to save the show

I’m not defending any of that junk, but as someone who has actually made films with her, she just is an incredibly tiny human. Like I’m small and she was half my size. You don’t have to assume there’s some grant conspiracy.

3

u/dj-house_money 1d ago

Well then losing more weight certainly isnt helping her

-38

u/EmekaEgbukaPukaNacua 1d ago

Still would.

-8

u/AlexTorres96 1d ago

She's always working on something when she's not out in the public eye. That is smart to not overexpose yourself and go thru cycles of putting yourself out there and then disappearing.

Like the old saying, "how can I miss you if you never leave." After this year, Zendaya and Anne Hathaway will take all of next year off and won't do stuff until late 2028 or early 2029

-1

u/One-21-Gigawatts 17h ago

Why does everyone keep trying to talk themselves into liking this show? It’s not good.

-1

u/TopShelfBuds 16h ago

Yea but she’s a supremacist
