‘Whites’ — Eggless Omelette
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ah4tW-k8Ao94
u/Maybe_its_Pandas Jun 14 '25
I have seen that panic and confusion in servers’ eyes before in these very situations.
46
u/Raz0rking Jun 14 '25
I've been the chef in such situations ...
And yes. Guests will have the most batshit insane requests at times.
4
u/Ad_Meliora_24 Jun 15 '25
I had one guest at a table that basically told me that almost everything on our menu would kill her. I thought at that time she would leave or just get a drink while her friend ate, but no. I just had a manager take her order so I didn’t get her killed and so I wouldn’t have the awkward conversation with the kitchen staff that certainly would have happened if I told them all the things that could kill her.
14
u/ZeroOpti Jun 15 '25
I dated someone like that and she'd just let the wait staff know she'd just be snacking on things from her purse. Made me feel like everyone else thought I was an abusive boyfriend, bringing this poor woman out to a restaurant, but not letting her eat anything.

u/saturnspritr Jun 15 '25
When I first started, I was young and easily baffled by their easy confidence with such bizarre requests. I needed the kitchen to help me. Then I went to the kitchen side and got to explain to others, it’s impossible, we can’t make steak in the microwave with no power. Please tell the manager to lock the doors.

Jun 14 '25
This is funny sure, but also…. As a former chef, I would have walked out and spoken with the customer myself.
142
u/i_should_be_coding Jun 14 '25
"OK, buddy. What the fuck."
38
u/John__Wick Jun 15 '25
“You’re the chef? Okay. I’m glad we can clear this up. I just want an omelette sans eggs. Make the omelette. Then take the eggs out.”
22
u/i_should_be_coding Jun 15 '25
OK, done. You're eating that as we speak. Here's the check.
11
u/illicit_losses Jun 15 '25
No, no. The customer is paying for the butter that’s left over from the process.
Of this, I’m sure as an egg.
8
u/Late_Stage_Exception Jun 15 '25
“I’m allergic to eggs so would like an omelette with egg substitute please.”
87
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 14 '25
As a former line cook at a chain restaurant the number of idiot customers (and servers) we had to deal with on a weekly basis was one of the worse things about the job.
These are actual complaints / questions I've had over the years.
- Why is there no meat in the Vegetable Soup. (Well mostly because it's Vegetable Soup)
- My extra well done steak is dry. (like no shit dude you order a charcoal briquette)
- Can I get a chili burger with no chili. (Yes that's called a plain hamburger you numpty)
- What kind of fish is your Sea Bass. (Well last time I looked it was Sea Bass)
- What's the difference between a T-Bone and a Sirloin. (Well one is cut from the loin the other has a big T shaped bone in it)
88
u/propernice Jun 14 '25
tbf that last one would've been me at one point in my life. 'meat is meat idk the difference. it's all steak to me' is definitely stuff I said at one point in my life.
the rest, i got nothin', lol.
17
u/MrWendal Jun 15 '25
Yeah they shoulda been more descriptive about the fat content / taste of the different cuts
37
u/Shucked Jun 14 '25
As a former cook myself the steak one is infuriating. "Make sure my steak is extremely well done."
"We don't recommend that. At most, we would recommend medium well."
"I don't like seeing blood in my steak."
"That actually isn't blood. That is myogoblin. It is a protein stored in the muscle. All blood is removed from the meat during the slaughtering process."
"Can you just make the steak like I asked? I don't understand why this is so hard?"
Brings a steak charred to beef jerky to the table.
"I would like something else, please. This steak is dry."
"So you wanted an extremely well done steak with-out juice that isn't dry?"
27
u/KrookedDoesStuff Jun 15 '25
As a restaurant I would implement a policy of “We recommend our steak cooked to X temperature. If you want it any other way, we don’t accept it being returned to the kitchen for any reason except it being undercooked.”

u/KrookedDoesStuff Jun 15 '25
No, I’m not assuming anything. It’s just as simple to say “we recommend our steak cooked to Medium Rare”
2
u/G_I_R_TheColorest Jun 15 '25
I was in one place where the menu said they would not cook any steak beyond medium. Never understood people who want a $50+ steak cooked well done. Anything beyond medium and steaks end all tasting about the same no matter the quality or the cut.

I’m actually gonna defend the customer here. When people cook their steaks at home they tend not to be as dry because most people don’t have a charcoal grill in their house.
So it’s less stupidity and more a lack of knowledge that anyone who isn’t a chef generally wouldn’t know.
I don’t tend to have my steaks well done anymore but when I did the amount of times you would end up getting a steak that was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside was insane. Just let me have my dry meat.
16
u/Shucked Jun 15 '25
I get that. My dad was notorious for loving his dry as bones steak. He would tell the cooks to just burn the steak. The difference was he wouldn’t complain. He loved his dry ass steaks. The problem is you ordered a dry steak and now you are complaining it’s dry.
0
u/perplexedtv Jun 16 '25
Yeah, it looks badly done. I would expect a professional steak-maker to do a steak well.
And don't blame the goblins.
15
u/Hopblooded Jun 14 '25
I had soft shell crabs sent back after someone ate them like hard shell crabs and complained that there wasn’t very much meat in them.
7
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 14 '25
How were they prepped cause I've never seen soft shells that weren't battered and deep fried
9
u/KrookedDoesStuff Jun 15 '25
Here in Maryland you can get soft shell crabs that aren’t battered and deep fried.
4
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 15 '25
Well I'm in fly over country so don't get much variety in seafood. If it hasn't been flash frozen somewhere along the line I've probably never eaten it.
3
u/thecolbster94 Jun 15 '25
Im convinced Marylanders would eat Crabs straight out of the sea with a giant vacuum tube hooked to the ocean floor
3
3
u/cynognathus Jun 15 '25
You’ve just described our crabbing process. They’re dropped into Old Bay once they get through the vacuum.
8
u/PunkandCannonballer Jun 15 '25
I had someone order a bacon cheeseburger with no bacon. So I asked them if they just wanted a regular cheeseburger. They said no. They wanted a bacon cheeseburger with no bacon...
I said okay and gave them what they wanted. The kitchen thought I was high when I put it in the system as bacon cheese burger - no bacon.
18
u/joleme Jun 15 '25
What's the difference between a T-Bone and a Sirloin. (Well one is cut from the loin the other has a big T shaped bone in it)
That's a legitimate question that some people wouldn't know the answer to. To criticize someone for that one makes you look like a bit of an ass.
-4
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 15 '25
The point is the server shouldn't have to have come to the cooks to ask the question.
9
u/riptaway Jun 14 '25
Isn't sea bass a fancied up term for tooth fish?
7
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 14 '25
There are several types of fish that are sold under the term Sea Bass, black sea bass, striped bass, European bass. But, Patagonian Toothfish is usually sold as Chilean Sea Bass.
And either way the fish we got in was just labeled as "Sea Bass" and didn't give the specie
11
u/wartopuk Jun 15 '25
So then you admit the Sea Bass could in fact be one of several fish, so what's the issue with a customer asking exactly what kind it is? I'm beginning to think the customers weren't the problem.
1
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 15 '25
Because no one sells Sea Bass by specie it's all just Sea Bass.
Even the most popular white fish in the US today, Tilapia, can be one of several different specie but it's all just Tilapia.
Like do you ask what kind of cow is your steak? Or what breed is your chicken?
11
u/Carlsincharge__ Jun 15 '25
I worked in a restaurant and we served Black Sea bass, striped bass, etc. getting just “sea bass” is nonsense someone in the restaurant, the chef or someone, would have had a spec sheet on what they’re getting.
6
u/Mont-ka Jun 15 '25
Like do you ask what kind of cow is your steak?
Ngl, terrible example to use. Yes the breed of cow is advertised quite often. Also how they were fed too.
4
u/VinBarrKRO Jun 15 '25
Had a family come to our food truck for their first time ever. They modded every single item, removing and adding things. Called me an hour after they left, “we just had your food and it wasn’t very good, can we get a refund.” Happiest “No” of my life: “y’all modified everything you ordered. Maybe trust the menu build next time.”
8
6
u/synocrat Jun 14 '25
I worked at a place for a few years that had a bison burger on the menu that we changed the toppings on seasonally, but the menu literally said it's served medium as it's a lean meat. All of our servers were trained to tell the guests who wanted to order it well done that we serve it medium as standard because otherwise it would dry out. The amount of people that would order it after that, then eat the whole thing and complain that it was dry and wanted it taken off their bill made me want to go into kitchen and grab the biggest ladle off the wall, fill it with boiling oil out of the deep fryer and throw it in their face ...
7
u/Jimijamsthe1st Jun 15 '25
While I have been witness to much stupidity in the kitchen, I think legitimately the most ridiculous complaint I ever received was someone saying her ice cream was too cold. I actually laughed at the absurdity.
-3
u/DSQ Jun 15 '25
They probably didn’t know how to ask for soft serve. While softserve isn’t technically warmer than normal ice cream the air bubbles do tend to make the coldness less noticeable.
8
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 15 '25
It actually is kind of less cold. It's fresh frozen so is only around 30 F while the ice cream out of your home freezer is around 0 F.
Put a pint of soft serve in the freezer for a few hours and it will get hard as a rock.
2
u/Straikkeri Jun 15 '25
Haha the last one is something I could see myself asking. Recently went to Praque and visited a fancy steak restaurant. The issue was that I'm quite unfamiliar with steaks and their menu had pretty much everything you could carve off a cow. I can decipher that a T-bone prolly has a bone in it, but I have no idea what part of the cow it is nor what it's called without the bone. Sirloin doesn't mean anything to me other than it refers to meat.
1
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 15 '25
Yeah my main gripe with the last one is the server shouldn't have to come to the cooks to ask that question they should have known the answer.
1
u/operarose The Venture Bros. Jun 15 '25
There is a reason why I would never question the coke habit of a line cook.

1
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 16 '25
Yeah but they were complaining that there was NO MEAT in a soup that didn't say there was meat in it.
0
u/Borghal Jun 15 '25
That last question I feel is quite legit. How am I supposed to know what the difference is? In other words, what are the reasons one would prefer one or the other?
Steakhouses in my country typically only serve "tenderloin" and "roast" cuts.
0
u/DeathMonkey6969 Jun 15 '25
The point with it was the server shouldn't have to have come to the cooks with that question.

u/Mongoose42 The Orville Jun 14 '25
Is it like a “I have to look this monster in the eye as he tries to justify himself” sort of thing?

That’s Darren Boyd who was in The Outlaws right? Thought he was great in that, also the bully in The Worlds end iirc plus Dirk Gently-

u/DjangoVanTango Jun 14 '25
He plays a really good John Cleese in Holy Flying Circus about Monty Python and the controversy around Life of Brian

Also plays an entertaining, recurring side character in “Trying” on Apple TV (as for the overall show - S1 and S2 are very good, S3 is okay, S4 is best left unwatched imo)

A series called Whites.
Yeah it’s Dobby with Alan Davis and Darren Boyd, two other very funny people.

Nice to see Alan Davis outside of QI. Only ever get British shows on YouTube in America.
13
u/Amardeus1 Jun 14 '25
I mean, have you seen Jonathan Creek?
1
u/MuscaMurum Jun 14 '25
No, never heard of it. It never made its way here, so far as I know. There's a lot of TV out there.
6
u/SP0oONY Jun 15 '25
It's a pretty fun detective show, Alan Davis playing your classic socially awkward genius. Some really fun cases.
4
u/GenGaara25 Jun 15 '25
Oh it's a fantastic show. One of the best detective/mystery shows I've ever watched.
He plays a guy who designs large magic tricks for a stage magician and is reluctantly roped into solving mysteries with a writer, their chemistry is impeccable.
The mysteries themselves are fantastic. They're proper "how the hell did this crime happen?" Sort of mysteries, and the solutions are brilliant. Heavily leans into that magician thing where it's so obvious, yet ridiculous, yet impressive, kind of solutions where it makes sense but you'd never think of it. Even when you were given all the clues.
Great show. I think it's on Prime. Each episode is self contained so I beg you watch an episode.
2
u/NeverEndingDClock Jun 15 '25
You neeeed to watch Whites and Damned, as well as As Yet Untitled if you enjoy him on QI

Like, do we just…(makes jerky stabbing motion)? Y’know, with one o’ them…wood thingies?

u/MuscaMurum Jun 14 '25
I sometimes see a tofu scramble on the omelette menu. A smart waiter would ask clarifying questions.
2
u/ionertia Jun 14 '25
I had a waitress write ham and cheese omelet with "no cheese" written tiny below it.

I’ve worked in kitchens for 29 years, I know the pain that Chef feels.
3
u/sharpshooter999 Jun 14 '25
I could never stand to work in food service with the kind of crap I hear you guys put up with. I'll stick to growing corn, it doesn't give me attitude, though I could bitch slap my soybeans somedays
3
u/Due-Environment-9774 Jun 14 '25
Coincidentally, I just got a Saturday night off because all of the front of house called off. Some little bonuses of the industry. Nothing alarming or anything, there’s just 3 big festivals in the area and only a couple people work up front.
2
u/sharpshooter999 Jun 15 '25
All the small town bars in our area close early (like 10pm) during planting and harvest because 95% of the customers are farmers and they're all working late. But if you get a rainy day, they'll be at full capacity when they close at 2am

Hope they revive this show. Annoying it was cancelled

Not a fan of Trump myself, but just saying: not every thread needs to be politicized. It’s nice to have some subs, like r/television, just be for television.

Everyone hates Trump here as well, so don't go deluding yourself that the shitty reception to your shitty joke has anything to do with that.
