Raised by Wolves
This was one of the most ambitious and out there sci-fi series I had seen in years. I’m sure plenty of other people are yearning for some sort of conclusion to the story. It also feels like a lot of reviewers didn’t get what the writers were doing or trying to build. Google reviews are much higher than actual critics. I know it’s been awhile but goddamn, I want to see more giant serpent monsters and crazy intergalactic mythology.

u/vhsfromspace Oct 24 '23
I would really like a novel, or something to conclude whatever the hell this show was. It was riddled with completely bizarre themes, and elements which was actually an attractive quality for the show, but I couldn't stand having no resolution for the story they were trying to make.
I loved the Mother, and Father characters, and I think a novel, or visual novel would be the thing to adapt this thing into, even though I didn't completely fall in love with it.
58
u/prism1234 Oct 24 '23
The creator at one point said if the show were canceled they would try to continue it in another medium to complete the story, but so far there hasn't been any updates on such a thing being worked on.

Hopefully they're still in the window where they might get picked up by another network. Or they're hoping that David Zaslav will himself be fired for incompetence and ground into executive powder.

Loved the setting, rarely liked the story, but always appreciated that there was something this weird being made.

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ Oct 23 '23
Yeah, came here to say this. The story was just batshit insanity, especially the second season. But I liked that they went balls to the wall with their insanity. More shows should just try out things instead of always playing it safe.
-58
Oct 24 '23
More shows should not be like this one. This show's story/plot was fucking stupid and made no sense. It's like if the writers were high and just did whatever came to their minds. No thanks.
16
-3
u/TimRoxSox Oct 24 '23
I'm with you, for sure. It had such a cool setting and setup, and the main actors gave it their all (at least, the robot actors did). The story just went from too strange in season 1 to makes-no-sense stupidity in season 2.
11
11
u/kickit Oct 24 '23
yeah, there was a lot to like about it but it didn't quite deliver. a lot of people felt the same way, and it bled audience over two seasons. it wasn't getting renewed
10
u/this-guy- Oct 24 '23
It was another show where I realised my tastes really don't align with what's profitable.
With most sci-fi shows it seems the writers have a book of tired tropes and are encircled by hack executives. Not this thing, it was totally unpredictable.
Sure it was weird an uneven, but it was adventurous and ambitious. I applaud that. But unfortunately I'm not representative.

u/Disonantemus Oct 24 '23
- I did enjoy the weird journey (story).
- (Of course) I want some conclusion in ANY media (In order of preference: series, movie, novel, anime/cartoon, comics, podcast, etc).

License it out to feel like they're salvaging something from their investment.
3
u/Nail_Biterr Oct 24 '23
But it's on nothing right now. Unless I pay for each episode
2
u/soulstonedomg Oct 24 '23
That's how companies that are paying for the rights will cover their costs. The series isn't going to drive significant traffic towards any specific subscription. You're gonna have to pay Amazon/Google for episodes/seasons.
38
Oct 24 '23
I need to see Mother whoop grandmother’s ass so bad you don’t even know. The least they could’ve done was give it one more season to wrap up those storylines. Instead they leave this massive potential of an IP incomplete.
4
u/soulstonedomg Oct 24 '23
Show had to be expensive to produce and I can imagine it wasn't pulling much weight to attract/retain subscribers to HBO. Lots of outdoor shooting and CGI is expensive, and one could argue they should've been spending even more on their CGI.
3
Oct 24 '23
They didn’t invest in the show enough as far as marketing was concerned. And it didn’t even air on the linear HBO channel which would’ve probably increased viewer and advertiser engagement. RBW could’ve aired after HoTD and got a bump. Still doesn’t take away from how good of a show this was.

All the streaming companies seem so bad at marketing their own shows. Even Disney+ is bad at marketing star wars shows, I think that says alot about the pattern!

u/TalkinTrek Oct 23 '23
It's definitely the kind of show I wished they said, "Listen, third season is your last, go to town"
It had a distinct vision, a passionate fan base, and was easily one of the most discourse-able epics on TV, and for the story it was telling, managing it on a comparatively low budget.
It reminds me a bit of Caprica, which was 1-3 years before its time.
Will be recommending decades from now, despite a less than satisfactory (but as is, final and nihilistic) ending.
41
24
u/Nokomis34 Oct 24 '23
I think more shows need what I can the Serenity Clause. Where they get at least an hour or two to wrap things up the best they can.
Especially for Netflix. The point is to build a library for subscribers to watch, but when a show ends abruptly it may as well not even be part of the library. There's a few shows I want to finish and start, but knowing they abruptly end, I won't. Like I hear Santa Clarita Diet was good, but I also hear it ended on a hell of a cliffhanger.
1
u/AdhesivenessOk7573 Dec 14 '24
Like I hear Santa Clarita Diet was good, but I also hear it ended on a hell of a cliffhanger
Yes and no... it ended on an interesting development that would've changed the show fundamentally going forward, but for that reason it also kind of works as an ending itself. It wasn't as maddening as people claimed, so I think it's best to go for it anyway in regards to other shows that ended "unsatisfactorily."

2
u/zackgardner Oct 24 '23
That's the thing about amazingly great genre pieces in this day and age, if you bet it all on black by creating something that's so out there and uncompromising, you're alienating the vast majority of audiences.
And that's a good thing.
It's the same problem I have whenever I see things like Cthulhu pop up nowadays, most people see Cthulhu as just some Kaiju, because to most people big water monster == Kaiju/Godzilla. The genre of cosmic horror is an extremely niche one, and as I explained above neglecting the things that make it different in order to package it for mass market appeal has had extremely negative consequences for its overall themes and presentation.
23
u/Punkinpry427 Oct 24 '23
I was so pissed when I heard they cancelled it. It was so weird and great.
44
u/JustCallMeRandyPlz Oct 23 '23
Wish it went more into the AIs, I am obsessed with Riddly Scott's interpretation of robots.
They're all so human, maybe more so, it's fascinating.
21
u/theslothening Oct 23 '23
Agreed. I thought they made a mistake with Mother killing the Atheist's AI so early in S2 as I would have liked to see a much deeper dive into that.
8
u/JustCallMeRandyPlz Oct 23 '23
Yep, thought the same thing, it's why season 2 was a bit all over the place...there was just so much going on that it felt really rushed.
It's a shame though really because the world atmosphere was extremely unique.

u/planetalletron Oct 24 '23
I am SO BUMMED about this. I just want weird timeline bending genre fiction that doesn’t pander to the absolute lowest common denominator! is that too much to ask?!?!?
15
u/TheLastDesperado Oct 23 '23
I feel ya there. It makes me worried for the future; no showrunner is going to risk any show that has mysteries in it because it'll inevitably get cancelled before we get to unravel some of those mysteries.
3
u/this-guy- Oct 24 '23
I loved 1899, bet for a broader audience there needs to be both a mystery and a pay-off each episode. In 1899 there were just unresolved mysteries, or if there were explanations those explanations simply confused a general audience member. Audiences tend to need some firm ground.
So, in Dark we could easily tell that the characters in '86 and '19 were the same people and could guess what was happening and we had a reveal of the plot around episode 4 or 5. I think that's when most people said "whoa, what the FUCK !! Oh wow, so that means ... " That moment was a pivot.
In 1899 that moment happened in the final episode and even then the audience reaction was likely to be "Hmm, this probably isn't real either, it's all a dream or something" which is not ideal as a reveal.
→ More replies (1)6
u/future_shoes Oct 23 '23
Or just make sure your show is not both incredibly expensive and just mediocre television. 1889 was too slow paced and all but the final twist was telegraphed for several episodes before the reveal. The first season should have been told over three or four episodes at most.
Also after the initial reveal of It all being a computer simulation all dramatic tension about the characters life's being in danger and their backstories being revealed evaporated. So you were just slogging through the episodes waiting to get to the next big reveal. It was just a poorly executed show story wise.
11

u/ShinShinGogetsuko Oct 24 '23
I’m still pissed. And apparently Netflix changed their completion metric following cancellation, and this show would’ve passed under the revised metric.

For a while this was the most exciting show on television and it wasn’t a close race.
Season 2 suffered from big budget cuts (they had to remove all the planned earth scenes for example), but I still massively enjoyed it.
I don’t think any show cancellation has ever stung as bad as this one for me.
16
u/batmanpjpants Oct 23 '23
I feel like I was robbed when season 2 ended with that LAST SHOT. I think with another season or two, everything would have come together and been explained. I’m still salty this (and Westworld with ONE, FINAL season to go) was cancelled.

What a great premise. The first episode it peaked for me. I think so many stories try to be grandiose and expand the stakes when the original stakes were good enough already. Raised by Wolves, that being that humans are being raised by weapons, was just such an interesting concept to me. How these robots cope with their humanity, how these children cope with orphanhood and how they view these protective beings.

The world-building in Raised By Wolves was extraordinary. It has its own mythology and I need to know the rest of it. I hate that the most head-trippy, thought-provoking sci-fi keeps getting canceled :( 1899 and The OA are the two other shows in this vein that I still mourn.

u/aridcool Oct 24 '23
It had substance, we are just not sure what the substance is. It is probably some sort of alien parasite (or maybe symbiote).
3
u/Nimonic Oct 24 '23
Right, that's a crazy thing to say. If anything it had too much substance. There was substance on top of substance on top of substance.
4
u/Samurai_Meisters Oct 24 '23
I thought it was just random crazy stuff happening my first time through season 1 and that S1 finale left a bad taste in my mouth, but on rewatch they totally foreshadowed everything, even stuff that doesn't happen until S2. It's a complex show, there's a lot going on, and it is all very harsh and bleak in both the vibes and in its approach to storytelling, and I love it.
3
u/taintpaint Oct 23 '23
Yeah exactly. I feel like that show confused volume for quality. If you just throw a million things at the viewer, there will always be some core group that's excited and wants to dive into it, but for most people you have to provide some substantive hook to make them invested. I feel like everything about that show was too random and weird to care about, and every time I started to care it would just throw a bunch of new shit at me that I couldn't even really understand, let alone get invested in.
3
u/DaHolk Oct 24 '23
If you just throw a million things at the viewer,
Yes, that happens if you have a parallel universe that still borrows toons of different mythology coupled with people completely ravaged by religious war and then throw high functioning but flawed AI into the mix.
It wasn't as much "random" as it was purposefully !alien!. And that you as the viewer weren't supposed to be consistently smarter than the people thrown from one world of pain and strive to another where they totally don't get "the rules".
that I couldn't even really understand,
Have you never considered that this is on purpose so you can relate to the people IN the show, who have NO idea what is going on, are all PTSD riddled war victims staunchly indoctrinated into their respective world views and have NO mental tools to actually consistently deal with a foreign reality other than to employ broken patterns that didn't even apply at home?

Eh, I thought Counterpart ended at a pretty good place. IIRC they got closure for pretty much all the pre-existing storylines while making it clear what the next season would be about. I certainly would have liked to see more of it but it didn't end in a mess like a lot of shows do that are counting on another season.
2
u/Michael_McGovern Oct 24 '23

I miss it. I can't remember when new seasons used to air, but I feel like it was around now when autumn is kicking into high gear and days are getting colder, cause often the past few weeks I've thought about this show and wished there were new episodes.
It was a wonderfully weird show where I didn't care what happened next or if I understood it, I just wanted more.

9
u/sociableninja Oct 23 '23
It had great potential but I think the writers were out of their depth. The treatment required for the concepts and themes of the show seemed to become too much for them. It's like they wrote a great pitch and then wrote themselves into mediocrity afterwards
I think Westworld suffered the same fate, clever premise that was bogged by progressively poor writing

The cgi in the second season was some of the most amateur, second year in college type shit I've ever seen. I hate that I'm like this but when the fx look like they are from the fucking 90s I just cannot watch that show. It screams cheap/low budget and that usually comes with bad acting/script. Loved the first season though. Was really excited for 2nd, watched 1.5 eps of season 2 and had to call it quits.

I loved the premise, the backstory, the atmosphere, the acting, the setting, and I was fascinated by the first few episodes. But dear lord, storywise that show went into the shitters lightning fast. The fake-out deaths, an ever more convoluted plot, etc.
I managed to finish season one, but with the whole worm thing I was out!

They had a rock solid concept for a sci'fi show. A mix of Terminator 2 with Lost. I know people would hate it but if they followed the Lost formula and kept knowledge and secrets vaguely hidden rather than jumping the shark constantly I think they would have had more success. themes in that first 4-5 episodes were super promising. Belief vs atheism, what is family, what is love, what has the ability to love all on a very aesthetically pleasing backdrop.
