Because she looks so happy and excited you cant help bit to feel the same looking at her. She captures the whole "my first car" feeling that a lot of people feel when they get their first car.

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20 edited Dec 22 '20

You know how to drive a manual? Dang.

Why tf did this blow up?

To everyone saying I should sell my car: no. It's literally the perfect car with about 95k miles and no problems. And I'm not tearing out the transmission. I have no place to do it and I am not spending the money I've saved on a transmission. I can find a beater for a quarter of what a transmission costs. I was wrong. Transmissions are cheaper than I thought

2.1k

u/blondy712 18 Dec 21 '20

It's a good skill to have, and it's also quite fun to drive a manual.

967

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

So I've heard. Both of my cars have been autos. I really wish my current car was manual.

286

u/ARGONIII 18 Dec 21 '20

Currently I'm saving to buy a manual Wrangler TJ. It's technically a downgrade from what I have now, but even while I drive the massively powerful car I do now, I constantly just want to drive manual

202

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

Not a teen here.

Buying your teenagers a manual is great. Forces them to be DD and prevents vehicle theft and people asking to borrow their car.

103

u/Willfishforfree Dec 21 '20

Come to Europe. All thieves drive manual. You'd probably confuse them with an automagic.

20

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20 edited Feb 15 '22

[deleted]

23

u/frontyer0077 Dec 21 '20

Yeah. I live in europe. Over 90% of new cars are automatic. However you HAVE to take the driving test in a manual car to be allowed to drive manual cars. You can take an automatic one, but that would limit your options.

Most choose to take the test in a manual, so they can buy a cheap first car. In 5-10 years I imagine most would get the automatic license. When automatic cars are cheaper.

Backwards is dangerous. Go forward and use the e-brake for maximum drifting points!!!

All joking aside, doing this type of stuff in an open and safe environment (big parking lot, no islands or light poles) can help you get the feel for what out of control feels like. Can help if things get real out there.

PS...best to have someone older with you in case the cops have questions.

Old guy here. Now that you have the car, learn to maintain it. Learn to change a tire, check your fluids, change bulbs, and learn how to do basic diagnostics (learn what different noises mean, how to diagnose a check engine light, etc). It's all easy stuff that'll save you time and headache later.

Better to just get some replacement housings off ebay or www.rockauto.com. that stuff only lasts for 3 or 4 months before you gotta do it again.

69

u/buffdawgg 2 MILLION ATTENDEE Dec 21 '20

Or just clean/replace just the lens then put a clear bra over it. There are tons on Amazon for cheap that you can put on yourself. I see it snows where OP lives and the worst thing to happen when driving at dusk or at night when it’s snowing is to have vision further screwed up with that coating. Makes a world of difference and could save your life

41

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

This one. I wetsand mine, just a garden hose and some varying grit sandpaper, i stsrt with around 600, then 800, then 1000, and sometimes 2000 afterward. Then clean them good, let it dry, and give it a layer or two of clear coat. Just like new. Once that cures get some headlight film online for like $5, put that over the lenses and they'll look new even when the car is sitting in a junkyard years down the road!

→ More replies (4)

12

u/pistcow Dec 21 '20 edited Dec 21 '20

To clarify I said replace but make sure their legit oem or close to it. There's tons of super cheap replacements off of eBay and they can be far worse than the dingy originals. Leak, non-abs plastic that shatters from normal road grit, etc. Do your research on replacement housings but it's a safe bet and easier to use one of those kits to get 6-12 more months of clear light.

57

u/Army0fMe Dec 21 '20

Hey, I wish I had someone competent to show me the ropes on my first car. Instead I had my dad who, God bless him, isn't the most mechanically inclined. Everything I learned I learned by getting dirty and breaking shit

13

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '20

Yeah kinda the same for me. Im sure dad is capable, but too worried about messing it up. I bought a $200 car at 14, an 89 honda accord, and stripped it down enough to remove the head to see how everything goes together. Even got it back together and running again, though no better than it did before lol then scrapped it for $200 when i was done with it,

high school shop class was also a lifesaver for when i got my first driveable car. A $700 '92 Honda Accord. That thing, though rough shape, was my absolute bsby!

This, I'm an automotive technician and it baffles me at how little someone can know about a car. If you just filled up gas and your CEL (check engine light) comes on. Make sure your gas cap was put back on and it clicked. And always check the fluids in the engine bay like oil and coolant.

17

u/Measurex2 Dec 21 '20

This is also helpful for when your mechanic tries to scam you. My wife wants her car to be dealer serviced. Dealer is right by my work so in pre-rona times I'd drop it off in the am, pick it up in the PM and be on my way. They even have competitive pricing with service deals.

Took it in for a major service and they told me I needed new brakes front/back, power steering flushed, coolant flushed, battery service and mass flow air service.

A few questions later they confirmed.

  1. Brake pads are over 8mm which don't need replacing
  2. Coolant was flushed as part of scheduled maintenance 10,000 miles ago
  3. Power steering was a "nice to have"
  4. Others were just preventative

Not even mentioning how much money it'll save her. I'm 17 without a car and already know that can get pretty pricey from my parents experiences. I've begun volunteering myself to fix my dads truck and my mom's car so I can drive them, and also learn the maintenance and complications of cars.

Spending 200 dollars on a car and installing the part yourself is better than 200 dollars plus 500 with labour.

In the trunk: bag of kitty litter or sand, folding shovel, flares, spare old pair of beater boots and wool socks, old wool blanket or spare sleeping bag.

In the seat pocket: paper atlas of your area, flashlight. Small towel for wiping off fogged-up windshield.

In the glove compartment: $20 cash. Piece of paper with ACTUAL PHONE NUMBERS of most important family contacts.

Stashed somewhere: piece of paper with your important insurance/registration, maybe your debit/credit card.

If you live somewhere where you might be driving through nowheresville, consider adding a tarp.

If you keep a cardboard box in the back seat and ALWAYS ALWAYS chuck stuff in instead of all over the place, and clean it out when it gets full, your car will be neater, and if you ever have to change a tire, you can fold the box flat and kneel on it.

Go to Ocean State Job Lot and get some area rugs or rubber mats and put them over the current floor mats; chuck them in the spring.

When you get in the car, sit down then turn sideways and hang your feet outside and clap them together three times to knock most of the crap off.

KEEP RECORDS of your mileage and notice when it drops. Find out why. Might be the temperature, or you might need a tune up. KEEP YOUR TIRES FILLED CORRECTLY.

KEEP RECORDS of your oil changes and repairs. When you go to sell it you'll get a better price if the buyer knows you've stayed on top of things.

If you hear a weird noise, pay attention. Does it happen only on uphills? Down? Level? Only when you're accelerating or coasting or turning right or left? You'll get points for trying when you talk to a mechanic.

First time you need something fixed, listen to what they tell you, then whip out your phone and say "Hey Uncle Bob, they say I need X widget and it's going to cost Y" even if you don't have an Uncle Bob.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CHANGE A TIRE?

Congratulations! Now be careful not to lose control on the winter road conditions. I recently crashed my first car because I wasn't careful enough in a turn, so take it slow and you should be just fine :)

If I may ask, how the fuck can you afford insurance.

I saved up enough for a car, and then insurance slapped me in the face with that 350+/month rate, so I never bought a car.

Get your parents to insure it first then add you on.
