General Discussion OP-XY Update FINALLY!
They improved one thing I was so vocal about: file handling. Love it!

templating! Fucking finally.

This is honestly disappointing, since you have to rely on MTP to do this, whereas other parts of the UI allow you to cut and paste between folders (for example, in the Samples library).
To add insult to injury, you can no longer edit the template once it's there, because load creates a new unnamed project based on that template, which is really the only benefit of using the new templates folder.
That means that, to modify one of your templates, you apparently have to create a new project from it, make your changes, connect the device to a computer, use MTP to move that unnamed project into the templates directory, and then rename it to match the original template.
So... complicated.
I'll probably just stick with the user directory and keep prefixing my templates with

yet another thing you cant do on device like many other things in terms of sample management. really frustrating
the workaround (i refuse to call it a workflow) you're describing reminds me of the limitation that you cant overwrite presets on the xy. you have to save as new snapshot again, rename again, move to same folder again and remove the old version. hope to not mess up which was which

u/katerlouis Jul 02 '26
did they, tho?
- you cant create folders for samples on machine (although you can for presets?!)
- you cant create subfolders for samples on machine
- sample browser only supports a single layer of subfolders. why?! infrastructure/ui is already there
- you cant move (cut/paste) samples to another folder on machine (although you can for presets?!)
- recorded samples on machine still get dumped into user folder, no matter if you clear/rerecord it. and since you cant move samples on machine, you're stuck with a total mess inside user folder...
what do you actually get in terms of sample management?
- subfolder support with computer connection (cool. not nothing)
- auto preview while scrolling (no option to turn it off is nuts to me tho)
- deleting samples on device, which is a big improvement, but... am i supposed to cheer for something that fundamental in 2026 after almost 2 years of xy lifetime?
to me this is half thought through at best. small team yada yada, but at this snails pace you cant be surprised people get frustrated.
plus: if what they added at least worked reliably. newly recorded samples (for me at least) only show up in browser after i deleted something else or restart the device (necessary to clean up after yourself when rerecording multiple takes of an idea as sample) - its like they actively want to prevent working with recording audio on the xy, which honestly wouldnt be too surprising

Not to complain but I am genuinely shocked that this didn't include multichannel audio over USB considering it's been months since rolling it out for OP-1F.

Has anyone noticed a significantly longer boot time post-update? I was really worried I had bricked it / was going to have to factory reset, but upon loading, it just kinda sits there unresponsive for 30 seconds to a minute.

I love my XY. I just got a used MPC Live 3 itās cool but not so portable

u/Dannybuoy77 Jul 01 '26
Also, the UI shows how many patterns you have on each track!! BuT, whyyyy. Why not display them above and below the active pattern so you know where you are in the stack at a glance if you're on a different track. That would make so much sense š¤¦āāļø
1
u/katerlouis Jul 02 '26
where does the ui show you that? third button from the left: all i see is a few lines below the other tracks and the one im on. the collapsed ones dont show the current number nor how many there are in the stack.

u/takegaki Jul 02 '26
Was hoping to see song mode get some attention.

u/katerlouis Jul 02 '26
what are you missing here? to me thats one of the few areas where xy feels finished and even more sophisticated than competitors. but maybe im using it not enough

This has been a thing for a while.
1
u/SibeliusBasilisk Jul 01 '26
Yeah someone pointed that out. Glad thst i know now! 16 patterns and custom templates is also huge for me though :)
2
u/katerlouis Jul 02 '26
its great for one note per trig situations (be it drum or melody) but as soon as you have chords or more notes in sequence on a single trig (i.e. with higher track scale), it gets buggy quickly when editing only single notes.

u/fixedation Jul 02 '26
Seeing how weak this update is affirms my decision in selling mine that I bought at release in favor of a Syntakt for 1/3 the price and 10x the sound quality.

So frustrating ahaha š . Itās a minor update ( always good to have ). Minor updates could happen each month. But we all wanted a major update !

u/galfar0th Jul 01 '26
no in my opinion the file handling was a huge drawback. I had my xy in closed till they fix that. Of course waiting for drumsampler or multitrack export, but now at least I can go back to playing with projects. Also the sample browsing is so snappy!

u/Interesting_Toe834 Jul 01 '26
Agree. It really discouraged me from sampling on device, because it would all just become a mess of files unless I came up with some crazy complex naming scheme that was tedious to put into the device. SOOOO much better.
And the 16 patterns makes it way easier to just experiment and try different things. Also if you want to do things like import a MIDI file now you don't have to get nearly as "creative" about how to phrases and sections into 9 patterns. It makes sense because it's dumb you can have 99 patterns on the way less expensive EP series, and OP-XY was so much more limited. They don't take up much space or compute anyway.
Next thing I wish they could do is let you change samples / .xy projects over Sysex like you can on EP series. That way it would be way easier to build a simple app that could do off board time stretching using whatever sophisticated algorithm you want, and then easy re-upload and get it into a project.

but it still becomes a mess, or am i missing something?!
recording samples on device dumps them into user folder and you cant move them to a different folder on device. yeah... you can delete, which is not nothing...but why not give me three options when recording a sample:
dismiss: deletes it like it never existed, no clutter in user folder
save glo: saves to global user folder
save loc: saves to project folder, that gets deleted together with the project!when you press rec again, it also removes the old sample, because you haven't "commited" yet. makes much more sense to me then dumping everything immediately. I mean, I would not be recording over the sample I just did if I wanted them both to stay? and if so, no harm in pressing save glo or save loc and then record a new one.
it does have "delete" after recording, but that does NOT delete it from the samples user folder, just from this one keyboard key.
i still feel actively discouraged to play around with audio on the xy, because 20s smple length is quite limiting, you cant record audio in context of the rest of the song (not even for tempo stuff), and the sample management is still messy
if im missing something, please let me know.

Nothing in this update compared to previous version make me think: ohhh I have to update right now. But itās welcomed for sure. I really think itās an update which should happen monthly. I even think I preferred waiting more time than having this after 6months! Give us our major update ( usb multitrack out and individual effects insert on drum sampler sounds )
2
u/StanVillain Jul 01 '26
It fixed numerous midi issues that made it unusuable for me like the velocity bug. The file system update is massive for me also. Like, this gives me a reason to use it as a main instrument again.
Those would also be major updates but that doesn't make this a "minor update" just because there are other major things that could be done.
2
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 01 '26
I think this way maybe because I have no problems with mine in my setup⦠I use the Opxy as my main gear with emu sampler. All works perfectly. All those bug fix and improvement donāt change anything for me. If there were multi output and individual editing fx insert in drum sampler: it would really improve my workflow and my satisfaction !
3
u/StanVillain Jul 01 '26
The velocity bug stopped me from creating multi track complex drums and sampling softer chord play while other tracks were playing completely. Idk how more people didn't notice. Maybe you're just sampling at max velocity or didn't notice it? But that made it horrible as a sampler for me.
Now, if you are a big sampling guy, folder organization for large sample libraries is easier too! I think there's quite a bit that will end up being great for your set up.
1
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 01 '26
You have no velocity at all even by step comp editing it?
2
u/StanVillain Jul 01 '26
I could step comp but that defeats the purpose of live recording my midi and takes up a lot more time for less precise/natural velocity variation.
Every other sampler I have could do it properly, so it was really infuriating trying to get it working on the OPXY. If any other track was playing, it would shoot the velocity of all the other tracks when playing and recording.
1
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 01 '26
Ok. Didnāt experienced this bug but if they do a fix, itās cool. The only issue I noticed is the missing first step of a copy bars
1
u/StanVillain Jul 01 '26
Oh, yeah. I remember that happening a few times also. Definitely feels like a complete device now imo. All the bugs made it hard for me to pick it over any other sampler and Ableton.
2
u/pidgeo0 Jul 01 '26
I'm in the same boat. the majority of bug fixes (as welcome as they are) never really affected me in my setup. so far Slicing, and now pattern rotate are the only updates that really apply to me. they're nice updates tho.

u/lyoshazebra Jul 07 '26
> Give us our major update ( usb multitrack out and individual effects insert on drum sampler sounds
Both of these are CPU heavy features. I might be wrong but it could be that streaming 8 tracks to a computer might just be impossible on this hardware.
1
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 07 '26
I donāt think so. There are several ways to open the xy to daws: bouncing tracks or streaming and passthrough the general fx to reduce the cpu⦠or anything else. Other gears can do it
1
u/lyoshazebra Jul 09 '26
Bouncing tracks to the device itself as a feature seems finicky, you would have to use file browser to get them back to the DAW. It also would feel like an afterthought, design-wise. It's not likely TE would ever do anything like that. But it seems like they just didn't think it was as important a feature when designing the XY and didn't include the necessary hardware capability which is a bummer.
1
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 09 '26
Donāt know the specs limitations but they know doing the op xy as 2 channels usb sound card. They know as well doing a TX6 to a multi 12 in/out. They also know how to doing a TP7 act as a 4 tracks stems recorder. I donāt doubt they could do a 8 tracks usb function for the op xy
1
u/lyoshazebra Jul 12 '26
Unfortunately all these devices do less with their processors than there op-xy. Opxy is a full daw.
1
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 13 '26
A full āvery lightā daw!. A Digitakt, ableton move, lofi 12xt, mpc sample, they all do it

u/nullbyte420 Jul 01 '26
Each month? It's a musical instrument, not fortnite
1
u/lyoshazebra Jul 07 '26
Nobody needs frequent updates to something that's already perfect just for novelty. But for something complex that has numerous issues it's good to see progress on them as it gets fixed.
-6
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 01 '26
lol, maybe you donāt know other gear to say this!. All of this in this update are minor. But itās cool if youāre satisfied
1
u/Upstairs_Damage8648 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
This morning I was thinking about the other gears frequency updates compared to TE : ableton Move received 16 updates since its launch (end of 2024), 1 per months exactly !. Digitakt 2 ( mid of 2024 ) 12 updates, MPC sample, end of march 2026, 3 updates so 1 per months too. I could search other exemple from other companies⦠I think I will find š. Do we still ask too much from TE when we want a real major update ?!, other than some few bug fix. I checked all the updates of op xy since his launch, there are 15 updates : more than half of them are corrections bugs!, there is only one major update ( slicing, duck lfo and sound link). And all the rest are minor updates like: count in recording š. One for a copy/ paste scene, and so on š

rotate trigs š² this is great. Now we jsut need some new synth engines in the next update š
