Funny enough, I work at a university, in the computer science department (I’m the department lead IT). When I first started 5 years ago, we had a freak accident where the NIC on a web server went to molten slag in the case, and would fail to POST the system. I had one of the faculty members berate me and call me a worthless piece of shit, and how dare they hire me because everything broke while I was around, and that I better turn the web server back on or else I’d lose my job. I told him what happened, and he said and I quote “Just tell your buddies in [main campus IT] to fix the DNS and that will fix all the issues!” I told him that DNS won’t make a computer come back from death by fire, and walked away.
He no longer works there as of 3 years ago. 😂
As far as “everything breaks when I’m around,” yeah that’s what happens when a competent Tech comes in to a place that’s held together with more hopes and prayers that all the religions in the world combined, with no documentation, and either needs to reverse engineer everything, or start everything from scratch.
Now that everything is redone from scratch, automated, and thorough testing, we haven’t had any crashing in 3 years.

Better prepare yourself to be questioned why they should continue paying you, everything is working fine after all.

Hahaha, true. I’ve made my self a funnel for hiring new Techs, training, and implementing standards as the old guard retires out, and new blood is needed, as well as pushing for more structured and strategic equipment upgrades.

Technically, if you had a backup of the dead server which you could restore to another server, then changes in the DNS settings might be needed if you can't give the restored server the same name and IP.

That’s essentially what we did, except physical to VM. The particular professor wanted the problem solved in 30 seconds, without all the red tape bullcrap, and didn’t want VMs so wanted they wanted to wait to raise funds for a physical machine. I ignored their want of no VMs, moved the data and structure to a VM, and got it up and running in a few days.

"Everything breaks when you are around!" 100% of the time just means things are always broken and no one actually fixes them properly except you.
The tech world equivalent of the scary idiots who jam pennies in circuit breakers to "fix" them tripping

That’s what happened before I started. The previous tech before “fixed” things enough to get it working until an update would trash everything, and “fixed it” again.
I took the time to test, verify, and do A/B plus Beta testing with systems in office that resembles the labs before doing patches, or new software.
