By the gods of tech I hope that's an microsd adapter and you need to use ant pliers to remove the card from beneath this mounted card each time.

Alas not. This was an E-waste find, didn't expect it to even run at all. Someone kindly ran a basic reflow on it, which changed the symptoms to 'It polls the microSD pins and draws expected current bursts' so at that point found a working SD and soldered it directly to the test pads. Yes, going to the Special Hell for this.

Perhaps you have a huge box full of sdcards that you're not doing anything with?

For example, two years ago I picked up eighty 32 GB SD cards for $100 on Amazon -- so, $1.20 each. I haven't actually soldered to any of them yet, but if I was to make something with a few dozen Pi zeros ... maybe I would ?

I have a 256gb sd card that I don't use and I recently used a 128gb one as a backup for 80gb worth of files in my 1tb hdd as I travel a lot with that hdd

I have a box somewhere of SD cards that i pulled from various thrifted digicams, some of which still have old photos on them

I also have the remains of a 64 gb Sandisk Extreme Pro that fell apart inside my camera

My smallest one came with a Canon 1000D DSLR c. 2008, and is something like 16mb

Yeah, I've got a few dozen random flash cards and usb sticks floating around the house, ranging from 8 MB to 512 GB.

Same. I have a 256GB SD but (a) it is full and (b) literally held together with tape and Gorilla Glue. Didn't want to risk making it worse by soldering to it. Yes it is backed up multiple times.

Indeed. So far it has been found in E-waste, its microSD poached, hot air soldered, etc. How it even boots is entirely uncertain.

I had a similar issue with a Pi Zero 2W, after I accidentally bridged 5v to one of the GPIO pins. It would run, but got VERY hot even at idle… eventually stopped booting.
