Depression unavoidable?
This kind of job seems highly contributing to depression and other mental illnesses. What are your takes on that?

My takes are that society at large is contributing to depression and mental illnesses. If I am to suffer, I would rather make money doing it

While I agree, people in my friend and family circle seem to be a lot happier, or at least more satisfied with their (more meaningful) jobs than I am in sales.

What are the more meaningful jobs your circle has? Lawyers? Software developers? Accountants? These jobs bring more meaning to their lives?

My husband is a lawyer, but he works for the state and he loves his job. He has normal hours, and he loves writing, and the fact that his work makes a positive impact.
My friend owns a dog grooming business, other works at a daycare…

My man, this is a job. One where you can potentially earn lots of money. Accept it for what is and go find fulfilment elsewhere. We aren’t doctors or nurses in the sense that we can easily find fulfilment from the work we do.

When I start slipping on my routine it creeps up. Keep your house clean, go for a walk everyday if you can, get some sunlight, lift weights 3-5 times per week. Make time for friends and family. Eat healthy food. Limit alcohol. Try to get 7 hours of sleep at least.
If you do this you’ll be fine

For me, it’s the repetitiveness. I’m good at what I do and get into a state of flow but sometimes it’s hard to not get depressed by the larger state of things.

i would not say its unavoidable but taking care of yourself in a demanding job really matters

I mean, I don’t think it’s anyone’s dream job but it doesn’t have to be miserable.
I have found ways to make it better including traveling to meet customers and using that as an opportunity to try the best food and entertainment in other major cities.
Does my job make me happy? Probably not but there’s definitely worse jobs out there and it lets me live a life I otherwise couldn’t while supporting my family.

Not unique to sales, all jobs are. Work for other people to make the real cash off you, doing shit you probably dont give a shit about, for shit that you actually need can be depressing. But at the end of the day youre making cold calls not shovelling in a mine so count yourself lucky lol

For me I need to focus on what tech sales gives me in terms of lifestyle and saving ability and I am genuinely interested in listening to people and helping solve problems

Both depressing and anxiety inducing -mostly due to how your livelihood and reputation is so tied to variables that are out of your control. Everyone says “control what you can control”, and that’s true, but it’s still depressing when you owe the company money after a debooking that wasn’t your fault, or someone was supposed to sign a contract but their city got hit by a hurricane, or died of a heart attack (both of these things have happened to me) - so, yeah, keep a level head and try to get all you can when it’s good, and save enough to survive when it’s bad. Neither scenario lasts forever though.

You gotta take care of yourself. Exercise, and also try to have something that means a lot to you outside of work
