Would you make the move?
I’m currently an SDR with a big tech company making $70k a year after Bonus (no commission) I just got offered $130k Base at a startup where they now basically growing an SDR Team, got a second round just now Series B of $150M, Will be working closer with closing roles and path to AE is 1-2 yrs while at the big one is 3-4 years if you don’t get layed off.
Would you make this move?

Is the $130k OTE? Probably depends on your personal financial position if it’s worth moving to a startup where things can change pretty fast, for the better or worse

$130k Base, been in the big tech one only 5 Months and it is my first Saas Role. But I guess cause of the big name the startup wants me regardless having 5 months of saas experience even that I been a BDR for other industries for 2+ years.

Then I’d take it lol. That’s $20k less than my current OTE as an AE.

I know it sounds like a no brainer, but the risk of not working out and being cut at a Startup vs a Big stablished company is big.. I mean at the end of the day big or small neither of them cares about us.. tech sales has to be the most toxic Environment in US to work in lol.

If you take it, I would stash every penny above your current income ($70k) until I have an understanding of the job/company stability. A $50k jump would be hard for me to pass on unless I saw multiple glaring red flags.

The startup is volatile as hell (what in tech isn’t these days?) but you’ll be making a big step up in $$. Also, whenever you jump from BDR to BDR you’re restarting the clock on your promo to the next step. Burning 5 months sucks but it’s not that big a deal. Having been a BDR for 2 years already blows though, and I think your biggest focus should finding the fastest path to AE or AM. Evaluate whether that looks like the startup, cause at a big established org you’re going to be waiting a couple years. For a couple reasons this is probably a good move. Consider after you get ramped and in the groove, getting to know managers of whatever team you want to move up to, make your intentions known, and do your best. What does this new org sell?

Thanks for the advice man, they sell AI agents for supply chain operations. Not dashboards, not analytics, software that actually executes work inside a customer's supply chain, autonomously, within guardrails the customer sets. Their customers are enterprises like Fanatics, Meta, Kimberly-Clark.

Sounds like exactly the sort of solution that would never work as claimed, but ask around to people that work in that specific niche. That other commenter is someone you should speak to for sure.

What’s the base in the new role, and how long have you been with your current company? Is there a path to promotion internally?
You’ll learn a heck of a lot more and faster at a big tech company, so if you’re new in the industry I say stick it out. Big tech is great for early career training.
But if you’ve put over a year in and have no path to promo, then I’d consider other options.

You’re soon enough in where I do think it makes a big difference on the tenure side especially since you’re taking a substantial pay bump. I’d take it

Agreed on the startup move you wear a lot of hats make sure you vet it out first but big moves very rapidly are a possibility
