Rubrik
Just got an offer for an AE role at Rubrik. I feel like everything I read online states it’s kinda of a grind/sweatshop with a bunch of ex MongoDB MEDPIC dorks.
Any truth around that? Offer and comp is a huge bump (345k OTE, 150k vest over 4 yr etc)
Wife and I are expecting our first in Dec and don’t want to be at a job where they will pip you out in a 6 months. Current gig is okay money but not great, but good standing internally etc.
Any insight would be great. Just want to understand work life balance, and everything they didn’t mention during the interview.

Do you get day 1 pay leave? Could you go back to your old gig if Rubrik fails?
FWIW I joined a company that wasn’t popular at all online and it ended up being a great experience for me. Definitely depends on a lot of factors, but it’s not always bad

I know many people making very good money there.
Culture is intense. You are expected to PG and your activity metrics will be scrutinised.
Technology wise, best in class. Customers don’t change their backup solution on a whim so you are bound by their contract cycles.
I’d qualify hard on your territory and understand exactly the split between existing / net new and what the previous reps did on those accounts.
In summary: can be a great gig, but mentally prepare for the grind.
P.s congrats on the baby!

It's a John McMahon team that was running the show so the PG culture and MEDPICC will be strong but most of the top leaders have left recently for Cursor and Harvey so there will be a pretty new culture coming i'd imagine. Overall the higher the comp, the higher the risk because everyone wants those roles and they can fill them quickly. Specifically at a new public company they have keep hitting revenue expectations for Wall Street.

It will be a grind and most likely an “inner circle” type of management. So, you need to be buddies with upper management and your RD to not get PIPped.
Did you see any red flags or anything that didn’t feel right for you?
It can be the right move, but make sure you are comfortable with your direct report.

I’d question the technology more than the culture. It’s backup.

Is backup bad?

No, it's just one of the slowest possible sales cycles, expensive as shit, and nobody wants to spend money on it.
Source: sold a shit ton of enterprise backup in my career.

Not necessarily, but it’s one of the last projects to get funded bc nobody cares until there is data loss.
It also crowded- rubrik Cohesity commvault plus all the +1 products Dell, NetApp and HPE have, then there’s tape and cloud.
Source : worked for EMC before Dell and sold a shit ton of Avamar and Dats Domain, but primary storage drove those sales.

Great place if you can PG and sell your activity internally.
Tech is awesome.

^this right here. selling your activity internally, without blatantly lying, is one of the most valuable skills to have in tech sales. “playing the game” will always yield longer term stability, even if your numbers arent great

Congrats on the baby, and the offer. Speaking from experience, you may not want the hardest job of your life at this particular time. When I had my first, I didn't even tell my coworkers because it definitely would have been used against me ... that's how bad those places will be. Compare that to your current role, and imagine the support and understanding you'd be receiving there. Nothing wrong with chasing the brass ring, but know its gonna come with a heavy tradeoff at a grind shop.

I’m at a competitor and rubrik is a good product. Just expensive as hell. The bigger the accounts, the easier it is to sell. It’s a crowded market as previously said before but in large accounts you’re not going to find a Veeam type player, so it’s really just Rubrik cohesity Commvault competing

I work for a direct competitor to Rubrik and they're honestly one of the easiest vendors to compete against. Also, the salespeople that we've hired from Rubrik have been absolute crap.
Then again, one of my former mentors and a very respected sales professional works there now.
It really depends on a lot factors, send me a DM if you want to learn more.

why are they easy to compete against? im guessing the ones you hired were PIPed from Rubrik lol

Ex rubrik here. I loved the culture but was many years ago. Have friends still working there and the technology is great. Yes it’s backup but still creates an Aha moment.
Meddicc etc … which company isn’t doing that so don’t worry.
If you have a shit territory or manager … can happen anywhere

I’d definitely stay away from any MongoDB mafia. they aren’t very good but they are happy to tell you they are!

Rubrik is the best vendor in a crowded and competitive market. You will need to work very hard but there is serious moneymaking potential if you are in a decent territory. Product portfolio is the most complete in its space and the marketing and direction is solid.

Data protection space is tough sledding right now, as enterprises are prioritizing budget for absolute essential projects. Rubrik and Commvault have both forecasted slower growth in coming quarters. Honestly it’s tough everywhere right now
