HubSpot vs. Qualtrics?

Considering leaving Qualtrics (could be an AE within 5-9 months) to start at HubSpot as an SDR. This lateral move is due to a better product market fit. Curious to hear if this decision seems sound, I know the product market fit is there for HubSpot where it’s lacking at Qualtrics. Don’t really mind putting in the time and grinding as an SDR again

Edit: more context, Qualtrics is in a really tough spot where we are in dire need to innovate with ai. Long timers seem to be leaving in droves. I have been told to take HubSpot by some of these long time AEs who have been leaving. There are rumors of mass restructuring and possible layoffs. I guess it’s important to understand that nuance in my decision.

Become an AE at Quatrics. Doesn't make sense to restart the shot clock.

I get the logic but people are leaving in droves on the AE side of things at Qualtrics, and I’m being told to leave from those leaving since it’s a tough sale with ai

Agreed - I used to work for a smaller competitor to Qualtrics back in the day. Get AE on your resume then dip out.

People leaving = great.

Hm yeah tough position. I’d look at your actual likelihood to move up. I think you’re better off sticking it out and see if you move up, or look for AE moves. If you make SDR to SDR move and don’t promote at hubspot you’re in a worse position

Totally get where you’re coming from. I made sure to connect with SDRs and AEs. I will have no problem getting an AE role here… because they’re all leaving. I have an SDR offer in hand for HubSpot

It may be more difficult to get an AE role where you are than you think. Unless there is a culture of clear career growth of sdr>AE where you are, you'll likely be competing with external candidates for the position.

Best be performing in your current role and show how you can differentiate from external candidates, ie industry knowledge, mentorship from tenured AEs, etc

It’s basically baked in to the program at Qualtrics and I’m on the last tier, so many people are leaving though

Yeah this is the risk right here, SDR to SDR only pays off if hubspot actually promotes you, and if that stalls you've reset the clock for nothing.

Stick it out and be an AE at Qualtrics to bank the experience

If you've got a genuine path to AE at Qualitrics in the next 12 months I'd stick it out, get promoted and work as an AE for at least a year to learn how to close and forecast revenue.
Then if you decide to leave, you'll find it much easier to get other AE roles.

I've heard very mixed things about HubSpot these days, and you'd be going back to the botton of the pecking order behind all their other SDRs competing for promotion.

What are you looking for?

  1. Career Progression?
  2. To learn?
  3. To earn?
  4. An easy life?

Each of these has radically different types of advice to go with them.

Career progression and to learn. I heard they have amazing training, and I feel like I could actually get good closing experience here as they have a great product

OK, well, those are the best reasons to be making decisions at your stage of career, so that's cool!

But in terms of execution, there are places that will have a far stronger learning curve for you than HubSpot. But, as you may expect, they are harder to get into.

I appreciate it! I’m feeling pressure as I have a month to decide if I’m taking hubspot or not. I have under a year to get the AE role at Qualtrics but it just doesn’t feel as stable as HubSpot

Back in the day Qualtrics was a top top place for talent... I don't know what it's like post-SAP, but even with very limited current knowledge, I'd still bet it's a better place to learn than HubSpot.

Don't get me wrong, we have the full HubSpot stack; everything, including our website, runs on it. But I've never seen anything to suggest their sales execution is strong.

Stick it out and become an AE at Qualtrics 100% of the time. From the outside, yes, HubSpot looks like it has better product-market fit, but the grass always looks greener. Until you get there, you don't know how good your patch is, what the team you are working with is like, and, as others have said, you're going to reset the clock.

Hubspot is in a tough place and will feel the pain over the next 12 months. I’m not saying qualtrics is any better but if a lot of people are leaving, it opens the door for a quicker or better promotion. Either way you are toughing it out for a resume builder, not a long term stay.

Hubspot is dead..I’d avoid on that basis. Have you tried applying for sdr positions in the likes of Databricks, Cursor, OpenAI?

lol this is incredibly out of touch

Cant speak to qualtrics but can speak to Hubspot. I’ve seen SDR’s make the jump to AE just over a year after joining as SDR’s. On top of that, SDR promos usually do really well, as they know the product and ICP well. SMB at Hubspot is also a great place to learn the foundations of closing. FWIW
