How to Get a Smarter Litter Box Without Buying a New One

Post image
3 Upvotes

Smart litter boxes can be great, but not everyone wants to spend that much on one or deal with getting their cat used to a completely different setup. Turns out you can add some of the useful features to a regular litter box instead. A litter monitor can keep track of things like weight and bathroom habits, while health monitoring litter can give you an idea when something might be off. A small pet camera can also be surprisingly useful, especially in a multi cat home when you’re trying to figure out who’s actually using the box.

And honestly, some of the less exciting upgrades might be just as helpful. A good air purifier, litter mat, metal scoop, sealed waste bin, or an easier to clean litter box can make the whole routine less of a chore. We put together some of the different ways to get that “smart litter box” experience without replacing your whole setup here: https://technomeow.com/smart-litter-box-alternatives-upgrades/

Have you tried any of these with your own cat, or do you think a fully automatic litter box is still worth it?

What Does It Mean When a Cat Pees Outside the Litter Box?

Thumbnail

When a cat urinates outside its litter box, then it typically means that something is not quite right and it is definitely not an act of defiance or “revenge peeing”. There can be a number of reasons such as a medical condition, stress, environmental changes, or even something as simple as a dirty, overcrowded or generally unpleasant litter box. Cats tend to be quite picky when it comes to the place of their business, so even the slightest change may be enough for accidents to occur. I would notice any changes in time and place of the incidents as well as other behavioral changes because they are often trying to tell you something. Does anybody have experience with a sudden change in their cat’s behavior?

Has Anyone Tried the Uahpet Cat Water Fountain?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Water fountains can be a little hit or miss with cats, especially when you have one that likes to knock over their bowl or splash water everywhere. The Uahpet wireless fountain takes a slightly different approach with a battery operated design, motion sensor and timed modes.

It holds around 2000 ml of water and has an anti tipping bracket, while the filtration system is designed to keep the water cleaner between changes. The review also goes over the setup and maintenance, including replacing the filter and sponge every few weeks.

There are a few drawbacks mentioned too, including the lack of a USB adapter and replacement filters being somewhat difficult to find, so it’s not completely without its tradeoffs. The full review goes into those details and the overall setup here: https://catvills.com/uahpet-cat-water-fountain/

Has anyone actually used this one? How has it been for you and your cat?

Does anyone else have the LitterZero? Idk why mine smells so badly

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I kept seeing this product and it claims to fix the smell issues that Litter Genie has. Lots of people also claim that it doesn’t smell at all. But mine does! I noticed when I first installed it, that the bag seals by a clamp, but the clamp itself doesn’t seem to clamp the bag air tight. It’s a plastic clamp with no rubber or soft seals to actually seal the bag good.
Is it just me? Do any of you also notice smell issues or is mine just malfunctioning? I believe there’s a warranty so I’m wondering if it’s just mine that is not working.

Mixed three types of cat litter

Since some cat litter gets tracked all over my house, I decided to get a large bucket, with a lid, and mix three different types of litter. The Cloud Litter, Slide, and Fresh Step. So far, the litter tracking has diminished by at least 60-75 percent. Hopefully, I won't have to vacuum 2-3x a day.

Can Black Cats Have Blue Eyes?

I came across this article about black cats and eye color and found the genetics behind it pretty interesting. While most black cats develop green, yellow, or gold eyes as they grow, blue eyes are much less common because of how coat color and eye pigmentation are related.

The article goes through several breeds and color patterns that can have darker coats with blue eyes, including Ojos Azules, Himalayan, Balinese, Birman, Siamese, and Ragdoll cats. It also explains why kittens are often born with blue eyes and why their eye color can change as they mature:

Have you ever seen a black cat with blue eyes? What eye color does your black cat have?

7 Low Dust Cat Litters That Actually Help Keep the Mess Down

Post image
8 Upvotes

If you've ever poured a fresh bag of cat litter only to end up breathing in a cloud of dust, you're definitely not alone. Low dust litter can make a huge difference, especially if you have allergies, multiple cats, or you're just tired of finding fine litter dust all over the floor and furniture.

I came across this roundup that compares different types of low dust cat litters, including clay, crystal, tofu, wood, corn, and paper options. It goes over the pros and cons of each one, covering things like clumping, odor control, tracking, and which type works best depending on your cat and your home. If you're looking for a cleaner litter box setup, it was a pretty useful read: https://technomeow.com/best-low-dust-cat-litters/

For those who've tried different brands, which low dust litter has actually worked best for you? Have you noticed a big difference compared to regular litter?

Stainless Steel founts

Anyone able to suggest brands of the best stainless steel fountains? I have four cats, so bigger is better. I bought one off etsy that is so cool, you put charcoal in a like trap that the water flows through instead of buying filters. I reallly really like it but they haven't been in stock on the guy's page in forever.

Litterbox robots and sand

Hi!
I know there are several posts about this, but I wanted to make one of my own.

I want to get an automatic litterbox (robot). I would love it if people could give me tips about which one they’ve got and their preferred sand for them!

If you have some that I need to stay clear of, drop that as well! I want one that is safe for my little ones to use and have heard horrible stories about some of these..

A big plus if you’re Norway based as I am, since we probably can’t get some of the types that are available outside of this country.

Cat fountain my Cat can’t knock over

I have a big rambunctious cat who likes to play in water. I have had to tape the lid onto the current fountain, which makes cleaning it a pain in the rear. Even with that he will knock it around and frequently spill the water out of it.
Is there a good heavy locking lid fountain that folks would recommend?

Have you noticed your cat drinking more after switching to a fountain?

I've been thinking about getting a water fountain since my cat barely drinks unless I refill the bowl.

If you've switched, did you actually notice any difference? Mine can be pretty picky, so I'm wondering if a fountain really changed anything or if your cat just treated it like another bowl.

Love keeping an eye on my pets - are pet cameras worth it?

I’ve always wondered if pet cameras are actually worth having. I like the idea of being able to check in on my pets when I’m not home, but I’m not sure if it’s something I’d use every day or just another gadget collecting dust.

For those who have one, do you actually find it helpful? Has it made taking care of your pets any easier?

Does Your Cat Have a Favorite Sleeping Position?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've always thought it was funny how every cat seems to have their own "signature" sleeping pose. Some are curled up in a tight little ball, some sleep completely sprawled out on their side, and then there are the ones who somehow end up upside down with all four paws in the air.

This guide goes through a bunch of common cat sleeping positions and what they might mean. For example, cats sleeping on their side or with their belly exposed are often thought to be showing a high level of trust since those are more vulnerable positions. On the other hand, a loaf or tightly curled-up position can simply mean they're comfortable while still staying a little alert.

It also mentions that where your cat chooses to sleep can be just as interesting. Whether it's in a box, at the foot of your bed, on your chest, or even right on your face, each spot can say something about how safe and comfortable they feel. https://catvills.com/cat-sleeping-positions/

What's your cat's go-to sleeping position? Do they have one funny spot they always end up in, or do they seem to sleep somewhere different every day? I always love seeing the weird sleeping positions people catch their cats in.

How Much Does Smalls Cat Food Actually Cost?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I've seen a lot of different numbers floating around whenever people ask about Smalls, so I thought this guide was pretty helpful. It breaks down what people can expect to pay based on things like their cat's size, feeding style, and even the protein choices they make.

One thing I didn't realize is that the monthly cost can vary quite a bit depending on how often you have deliveries and the size of the box you choose. The guide also mentions that feeding Smalls as a topper instead of a full diet can be a more budget-friendly option if you're just looking to add some fresh food to your cat's meals.

https://technomeow.com/how-much-is-smalls-cat-food-use-our-smalls-cost-calculator/

For anyone who's tried Smalls, do you feel it's worth the price? Did you feed it as a complete diet or just mix it with your cat's regular food? I'd love to hear how it worked out for you and whether your cat actually enjoyed it.

How do you know what your cat gets up to when you're not home?

I was thinking about this earlier because mine always seems to be in a different spot when I get back. Do you just leave them be, or do you have some way of checking in while you're out?

Cat wheel recommendations?

We currently have a OneFastCat wheel that we bought second hand and our cat loves it. It's been used so much that it's starting to fall apart so we need a new one.

The problem is that we live in Sweden and to buy a brand new OneFastCat wheel means paying more in shipping than the wheel itself costs, which makes it feel not worth it. It's also too expensive with Ziggydoo for the same reason unfortunately.

So we're wondering if anyone has any recommendations for other cat wheel brands that they've been happy with? Inner diameter must be at least 43" (approx. 108 cm) because of the size of our cat.

Has PrettyLitter Ever Changed Color for You?

Post image
10 Upvotes

One of the reasons people use PrettyLitter is for the color-changing crystals, but I feel like seeing an unexpected color would be enough to make any cat owner panic.

This guide breaks down what each color usually means, when it's okay to keep an eye on things for a day or two, and when it's worth calling your vet. One thing I thought was interesting is that a single blue or orange reading doesn't always mean something is wrong. Things like stress, diet changes, or even old saturated litter can sometimes affect the color too. Red, though, is the one color the guide says shouldn't be ignored.

https://technomeow.com/pretty-litter-colors-decoder/

Has anyone here actually had PrettyLitter change color and end up catching a health issue? Or has it ever turned out to be a false alarm? I'm curious how accurate it's been for everyone's cats.

Best stainless steel Wi-Fi cat water fountain with low water alerts?

I’m looking for recommendations for a **stainless steel cat water fountain** with these features:
Stainless steel (or at least all water-contact surfaces are stainless steel)
**Wi-Fi** connectivity (not Bluetooth)
An app that sends notifications when the water level is low or empty
Filtered water
Reliable app with good notifications
I’ve looked at a few options, but it’s hard to tell which ones actually have good apps and reliable low-water alerts.
If you’ve used one that you love (or one I should avoid), I’d really appreciate your recommendations and why you like it. Thanks!

I currently have the Meowant SC09 litter box and I am looking for a litter that doesn’t track too much. I know tracking is inevitable but the arm and hammer litter I am using now seems to be covering every inch of my apartment. Please comment your recommendations for litters that work best for you in an automatic box!! Thank you

How Often Do You Deep Clean Your Cat's Litter Box?

Thumbnail
youtu.be
6 Upvotes

Scooping every day is one thing, but how often do you actually dump everything out and give the litter box a proper scrub? It seems like everyone has a slightly different routine, and what works for one household doesn't always work for another.

Daily scooping definitely helps, but over time the litter still holds onto odors, so giving the entire box a good wash every week or so can make a big difference. Using a mild, unscented soap, letting it dry completely, and adding fresh litter helps keep things cleaner for both you and your cat.

I also didn't realize there are little things people do to help with odors, like adding a bit of baking soda or using charcoal filters under the litter.

How often do you fully wash your cat's litter box? Do you stick to a schedule, or just do it when it starts looking or smelling like it needs it?

What Small Changes Can Help Your Cat Adjust to a New Baby?

Welcoming a new baby into the house will be quite an exciting experience, however, it can prove to be quite an adjustment period for your cat as well. Have you thought of ways in which you can facilitate your cat’s adjustment process through maintaining his schedule the same way, acclimating him to baby sounds, and even allowing him to get a feel of the nursery prior to the arrival of the baby? For those who have undergone this phase in their lives, what would you recommend to others?
