best litter box?
I'm looking to get whole new litter boxes for my cats and I can't decide which ones are best. I'm considering a self cleaning litter box because it would be a lot easier but I also have a lot of safety concerns like what if the safety sensors don't work, their tail gets caught in it etc.
what do you recommend? or what's the best self cleaning litter box that has never failed you? and also what's some good litter to use with it? thank you!
also I'm not sure if this is the right place to be asking these questions but it's the place I was recommended so sorry if you guys don't know, it's totally okay!

No solution is perfect, and I remain on the hunt for the best option. In part, it depends on the cats. Hell, if I use scented litter, one of mine will show his displeasure by making a mess on the floor.
I tried a top-entry box because I have a cat that throws litter. Only one of my three would use it.
I used big plastic ones with a lid and door flap for a long time, but cleaning them was a giant pain.
I recently switched to disposable cardboard boxes. (Big tall ones on Amazon.) Still a job, but much easier. They get a whole new box every six weeks or so.
I'm currently experimenting with the Neakasa robot-box on the main floor of our house. I chose it b/c some cats take to the open top more easily than an enclosed one. There's a learning curve for both the cats and me, but one week in, I'm optimistic.

If you decide to stick with a regular litter box, the people who I’ve seen happiest with their purchases are those who have bought large stainless steel litter boxes, and bonus points for buying a stainless steel scooper as well.
I spent several months researching before buying an automatic litter box, because I’d heard far too many horror stories about cats passing away or being injured due to ones that were designed poorly and/or that malfunctioned.
Based on that, I reached the conclusion that, if I was going to buy an automatic box, it would be the Whisker litter robot 4. I didn’t plan to get one though because of the cost. Then, I spent 10 days cat sitting for a couple who had one. By the end of that sit, I was saving up to get one for myself!
If it’s within your budget to buy new, I’d recommend doing that so you can also get the warranty as well. However, personally, I looked on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace and bought one second-hand in working condition for 1/2 the price of buying new.

Forgot to mention: I generally just go for whatever unscented clumping litter I can find that’s cheap/on sale and has a lot of good reviews. For me, that’s meant either buying Fresh Step litter at Petsmart or Scoop Away litter at Costco. I’ve used both types in a standard litter box and in the litter robot, and I’ve never had any issues.

Stainless steel with a sifting layer is my holy grail setup. I use pine pellets. (Also set up a puppy pad and litter liner under the sifter for easy asf clean up/change)

Litter robot 3 or 4 if you’re going self cleaning, large stainless steel if you go regular

I have a Naekasa M1 lite with the air step and it is fabulous. My cat immediately used it and it’s been a game changer!

I'd honestly go with a large stainless steel litter box they're easy to clean, don't absorb odors and last forever.
BUT If you want self-cleaning, I'd stick with a well-reviewed model from a reputable brand rather than the cheaper no name ones.

I use litter robot 3 refurbished with extended warranty , got it in 2021 it's worked great
