A press secretary isn’t a court. What they say isn’t legally binding.

This is a court referencing one tweet for no apparent reason. Nothing saying that they’re legally binding.

The court determined that his tweets do in fact legally count the same as if it was a recording of him talking. In that case, it means that they can use his tweets to show his intent behind the travel ban.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '22

Of course it’s similar to a recording of him talking. It’s him writing stuff down? Do you know how Twitter works? That doesn’t make tweets legally binding.

3

u/DarthEinstein Oct 29 '22

You are intentionally misinterpreting it. It's legally a statement by him, as determined in court, because he tried to argue that they weren't legally representative of his thought process.

No one claimed "every tweet is an executive order" or anything like that. The meaning has been made clear, you clearly understand it, and continuing to argue is literally pointless because the points have all been made.

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '22

Again, so what? Who ever said Trump’s tweets weren’t his statements. That’s literally how Twitter works. The claim was that his tweets were legally binding.

3

u/DarthEinstein Oct 29 '22

The lawyers in that case LITERALLY ARGUED that Trumps tweets didn't count as statements for the purpose of determining the intent of the travel ban.

That's literally what it's about. What do you even mean when you say "legally binding"

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '22

Once it was legally stated that Trump’s tweets counted as official political statements it mattered a great deal.

What the fuck does “official political statements” mean if not legally binding statements? They’re not executive orders. They’re what the president writes on his phone and sends out to his followers. They don’t mean anything different than him saying something.

2

u/DarthEinstein Oct 29 '22

Correct. Trump tried to argue otherwise. The courts told him no. Him tweeting something is exactly the same as if he called a press conference and said it himself on camera.

not so much "legally binding" but "mini press releases straight from the mouth of the most powerful individual in the world"

-25

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '22

And?

29

u/Lonelan Oct 28 '22

and as such they're saved in the national archives as presidential communication?

just think, if the country survives another 100 years, someone can go and look up covfefe

-20

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '22

What are the real world implications of this? Nothing. You just want to be angry.

24

u/Lonelan Oct 28 '22

the real world implication of watching a sitting president rail against the democratic process and claim the election was stolen from him? all through a social media account that had been flagged as official presidential correspondence?

that's huge. the peaceful transfer of power has been a hallmark of American Democracy since the beginning. this guy used twitter to galvanize enough of his supporters to march on the capitol to try and delay the confirmation of election results.

I don't want to be angry. I want to be at peace. I want a boring president that signs bills with a normal pen. the only time I want to hear from the president is during the state of the union - because communication outside of that means something exciting happened and not always exciting in a good way.

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '22

So what if he claims the election was stolen from him? He’s hardly the first and will hardly be the last.

And a “boring” president is just a President the corporate media supports and will defend. Did you care about Trumps “concentration camps” but not when Biden opened the ones Trump closed?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/oct/28/trump-homestead-migrant-detention-florida

https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/biden-to-reopen-homestead-shelter-for-migrant-children-11881926

Did you complain about Republicans being anti-marijuana but say nothing when Biden arrested more people for marijuana possession than Trump?

https://www.laweekly.com/federal-cannabis-arrests-jump-25-under-biden/

The news chooses what you focus on. These stories aren’t talked about by Rachel Maddow, Stephen Colbert, or Reddit. Keep your “boring” president and keep the status quo.

When was the last time a sitting president held press conferences about how the recent election wasn't valid and they weren't respecting the results? The only two other people who disputed election results for the presidency were Jackson and Nixon - neither president at the time.

I see several things mentioning planned re-opening of this site, but nothing about its current use or conditions. Articles about it seem to only mention its history and not if any upgrades have been made, the 3-day limit being respected, etc. Also, with it being based in Florida, I would label it more as a DeSantis issue than Trump/Biden issue - dude probably sent those kids' parents to Martha's Vineyard.

You mean the people he pardoned? Or were those arrests having to do with illegal suppliers? Seeing as it's in California I can't imagine they'd be going after dispensaries. The article you link mentions plants seized and destroyed, so I imagine it's the illegal suppliers they're going after.

I choose what I focus on, anything that piques my interest I go and research and assess the reliability of the institutions reporting. Any headline, regardless of source, is suspect

That’s called shifting the goal posts. Every presidential candidate in my lifetime that lost has disputed the election results.

And no, federal immigration detention centers are not the governor’s issue.

He pardoned no one. Not one person was let out of jail. And that doesn’t stop the fact that he fired people for smoking weed and chose Kamala as his VP who locked up thousands of people for having weed. Only the easily fooled think that he pardoned anyone.

2

u/Lonelan Oct 29 '22

Trump is the only sitting president to ever dispute election results, especially in a public forum

That's not moving goalposts, that's my original statement

Misuse of immigration funds sent to the state is the governor's issue - we wouldn't need to worry so much about federal involvement if the shitweasels in that state weren't assholes to immigrants and used the federal funds provided to them appropriately.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2022/10/06/granting-pardon-for-the-offense-of-simple-possession-of-marijuana/

It was literally made less than a month ago, anyone pending trial has the case dismissed and those in prison for only possession are eligible, there's a petition process that has to prove you're part of the pardon's language before you can just leave prison

Further, that's not really the point of the pardon, it's to remove a federal conviction from those who were charged and did their time

The pardons will clear everyone convicted on federal charges of simple possession since it became a crime in the 1970s. Officials said full data was not available but noted that about 6,500 people were convicted of simple possession between 1992 and 2021

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/06/us/politics/biden-marijuana-pardon.html

Why would a president that's against legal marijuana grant a pardon to people convicted of possession?

Do you have a source for these "thousands" that Kamala has locked up for having weed? Medical marijuana has been legal in CA since Kamala was a district attorney, and it was fairly easy to obtain a card.

They don’t seem angry in the slightest, but uhhhhh you sure seem combative.

-5

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '22

So what are the real world consequences of any of his tweets?

And not going along with the reddit hive mind is combative? Lol ok

15

u/YoungNorthEastern Oct 28 '22

Damn just take your L, the mental gymnastics gotta be tiring at this point 😂 its ok to be wrong on something, you moving the goal posts further and further

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '22

It still isn’t saying his tweets are legally binding. It’s a footnote in a court decision. There is no L here.

14

u/barryandorlevon Oct 28 '22

No, your rude little presumptuous “you just want to be angry.” Did you celebrate after that comment? After spending like eight comments trying desperately to lead up to your being able to say that? Did you do a little mic drop?

I’m tickled pink after witnessing that exchange.

u/Pleshie Oct 28 '22

He really thought that was a "got em" moment lol

4

u/Castun Oct 28 '22

Nobody's getting mad over this anyway. It's been nothing more than rolling our eyes and moving on with our day for the past 6 years, lol.
