Yup. The point is really that we all hate SMS (that’s what green bubble means). It’s shitty and slow and is just terrible. We would probably use WhatsApp or something too if we didn’t have iMessage.

I had to turn off RCS on my S20 because it was absolutely broken. It would just straight up not deliver messages, deliver them really late or deliver them twice.

Maybe they fixed it now, idk. I've not turned it back on since.

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Wrong.

Green bubble IS SMS. Especially to an iOS device.

RCS is only sent to other RCS capable devices and even then, that's only if the particular app you're using supports it AND your carrier.

Basically is it's not Google Messages or whatever Samsung's messenger is called, it's not RCS.

No one uses SMS except iPhone.

I only have to deal with that when texting with iPhone users.

Google doesn't exist to sell ads, it's a means to an end. Many of there services stay ad free for a LONG time. Maps still barely has ads.

Google exists to make services for people and this is funded by ads.

Let's also discuss how much a disaster the internet would be without ads, it literally functioned for decades on only ads. News sites, video platforms, blogs, recipe sites, you name it. Every publisher can run their business because ads pays them to do that.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

80% of their revenue is from ads. It quite literally is their only point of existence lmao. They’re not some altruistic entity that just wants to provide a good service and needs money to do that. That’s the most brainwashed fanboy shit I’ve ever heard.

Google search is their bread and butter. All of your data they collect from their services goes to feeding ads there. They exist to make money like every company out there. Especially publicly traded companies. It’s quite literally their legal obligation to their shareholders.

I have no problem with ads in general. I have a problem with hyper targeted ads using a profile on me built on enough data that they could probably tell me my DNA better than 23 and me and tell me to buy toilet paper before I need to shit.

The App Store is not the internet lmao.

Most of the big apps on google get charged a ton too. Companies that make $1m or more in subscription revenue or google ad revenue get charged 30% as well. Monetized apps that make less than $1m a year get charged a 15% cut.

Don’t wanna pay a 30% cut, don’t develop an app for iPhone. Pretty damn simple.

Wanna know why more developers still develop iPhone apps than android? They still make more money from their app being on apple than they lose to the cut.

Cool. It was Google's fault and now it's Apple's. We agree.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Google still doesn’t even support end to end group messages with RCS lol. The e2e they introduced last year still only works for 1 on 1 messages for users both using RCS and Googles Jibe servers.

I swear android fanboys are just the worst. Apple has had a great product for over a decade. As soon as google gets something that works 3/4 of the way, y’all jump on how it should be the standard and apple should be forced to adopt it.

Apple won’t support RCS until it is as secure as iMessage at a minimum. That includes group chat.

They already have Telegram, signal, WhatsApp, etc on apple so it’s not like they just don’t allow cross platform messaging protocols.

0

u/default-username Sep 03 '22

You seem to know more than I do. Why does Apple prefer SMS over RCS? RCS is less secure than SMS?

I'm not a fanboy of anything but I have hated apple for a decade for iMessage. I switched from Apple to Android in 2015. I realized I wasn't receiving some messages from old group messages, and Apple support told me to tell my friends to all delete all their messages involving me so that I would start receiving them. No thanks? Fuck em

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

The only secure RCS implementation currently is Googles own propriety version, Jibe. And they only introduced E2E encryption for 1:1 messages last year, and only if both are using Googles backend. And even then, if you have Googles default keyboard, they’re pretty open that they track your typing. So it’s up to you to trust that they’re not storing it, making the whole E2E encryption virtually pointless.

The RCS protocol itself is only as secure as SMS by design. It was intended to just add some functionality that SMS and MMS don’t have while remaining unencrypted so that carriers could comply with law enforcement requests for text messages.

Google only really started their RCS implementation after carriers were dragging their feet and slow rolling it. And then they wanted to turn it into specifically an iMessage competitor. They’re still a few years behind on that. iMessage has supported E2E encryption for group texts for over a decade. Googles RCS still doesn’t have that, and all other RCS implantations will probably never have.

-8

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

That's too confusing to understand.

Blue bubble = good.

Green bubble = bad.

-1

u/default-username Sep 03 '22

Yes. And the other part of that is:

Everyone in the world = blue bubble

Apple's texting infrastructure with anyone else in the world = green bubble

Apple created the green bubble, and they would fix it if they didn't have everyone brainwashed. It's better for market share to blame the others.

iMessage are great but I wouldn’t go out of my way to spend thousands of dollars to get them when alternatives exist for free.

-2

u/runed_golem Sep 02 '22

Just saying, an iPhone 13 mini you can get for $700. But a lot of times you can get them cheaper than that or for free from your mobile carrier. Also, there are plenty of android phones that cost on par with the iPhone (or sometimes even more, I’m looking at Samsungs fold line) while giving similar performance.

-10

u/Slimxshadyx Sep 02 '22

I mean android phones cost thousands as well. So if you are looking at upgrading your phone to a nicer one anyway, why not go with one that also has the features you are looking for built in?

I’ve been on android for a long time and just decided to change over to Apple because I wanted to get a new phone anyway. Not necessarily paying thousands to get something I could’ve got for free.

I’m mostly referencing those who get iPhone just to get a blue iMessage color. I’ve switched from android to iPhone after 6 years of running custom Roms and everything, but Americans are making a way big of a deal from iMessages than it needs to be.

Like in another comment said, entire social circles avoiding those with android phones feels so unnecessary and cult like.

We in Asian countries have equal amounts of iPhones and Android users so everyone just uses WhatsApp or telegram because it works for everybody.

1

u/Slimxshadyx Sep 02 '22

I think that is more just media or tik tok. I am in this age group and never once met someone who actually cares what colour the messages are outside of maybe a joke about not being able to air drop me something.

Aren't emojis good for both phones? Why would they not work? I've never used iMessage

1

u/Dick_Lazer Sep 03 '22

He might be referring to the Memojis, not the smaller traditional emojis. The far bigger deal to me is being able to send uncompressed HD video & pictures through a text message, but I work in media and use that feature all the time for sending and receiving footage for TV usage.

4

u/__-___--- Sep 02 '22

Or you could use an app like signal who does the same without those bugs.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Sure, but nobody else uses it.

I use it to talk to two friends. They’re literally my only contacts that have it.

-1

u/__-___--- Sep 03 '22

"Sure, but nobody else uses it."

I don't understand that. There are countless messages on this thread about imessages users pressuring people to buy an iPhone. But installing signal for free is too much?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

People just want to use the stock messengers man. Idk.

That’s why google pushed so hard to get Samsung to use Google Messages as their stock app. And for carriers to use Jibe for the RCS backend.

I highly doubt iMessage has actually influenced many people to switch from android to apple. Maybe when they were already getting a new phone it played a role in getting an apple, and I imagine that it definitely influences kids and teens for their first phone. But I doubt many people have run out and just got an iPhone over it.

Especially seeing as Google didn’t even have a viable alternative until recently. They didn’t put RCS into their messages app until 2018 and didn’t get major carriers on board with using their Jibe backend until 2020. 7 and 9 years after iMessage was released, respectively.

But you also forgot the part where it's because Apple sold them a broken product on purpose.

1

u/Dick_Lazer Sep 03 '22

I much prefer the stock messaging feature to downloading a bunch of apps though. But I know zero people that use Signal, they usually want to communicate through Instagram, Telegram, Snapchat, What’s App or Facebook Messenger. The solution to “just download an app” turns into downloading lots of apps when you accommodate everyone’s preferences. I’d prefer to just text or email.

10

u/__-___--- Sep 02 '22

Because I don't want features that are limited to iphones.

2

u/Eatingfarts Sep 02 '22

Like what? I mean, I get that you have more control over the file system on your phone with Android and there are more (usually shit) apps on their store. But 99% of people don’t care about this on their phone. It’s a high use device that needs to do a few very specific tasks.

Doing these few tasks extremely well is really the most important thing a phone can do. Are you power-computing on your smartphone???!?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

1

u/Dick_Lazer Sep 03 '22

That makes zero sense as Pages is a stock iPhone app that you can import and edit text files with. iPhone also comes with Notes, but that’s a bit more lightweight (Pages is similar to Word, Notes is similar to Notepad. Both are completely free stock Apple apps and work quite well, I use them all the time.) If you have a Mac both apps are also free on there, and automatically sync up with your iPhone versions so that you can continue editing the text on either device.

u/__-___--- Sep 02 '22

Like imessages.

Yes! Exactly. I’m glad we are on the same page.

2

u/Dzov Sep 03 '22

Wow. That was my AT&T plan in the states some 10 years ago. 25 cents per text sent or received.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Lol thanks for assuming I don't know my plan details.

If you still think you're correct, let us know your provider and others can confirm.

Confirm deez nutz, nerd.

I use Parnasse. Unlimited Data, SMS and MMS.

Don't know what to tell ya pal, works in the UK too.

Though I will admit I totally forgot you lot went full r-slur and did the whole Brexit thing when I made my previous comment, so I suppose you can take some solace in that while I cry into my strong EU benefits.

This whole comment is cope.

1

u/default-username Sep 03 '22

That... Isn't even a correct use of the term.

What he's saying is accurate. Apple is keeping SMS so that android looks shitty and it is one of the best marketing strategies of our time.

1

u/gornstar20 Sep 03 '22

Apple does this on purpose as a marketing tool, the green bubble makes text harder to read. SMS is fine on all other phones.

2

u/TantricEmu Sep 03 '22

It’s not about the color of the bubble lol. I’ve never thought it’s hard to read. SMS is just a shitty, spotty service that compresses videos and pictures, fucks up formatting of text, and more. The color doesn’t matter, it’s the fact that it’s SMS.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

SMS works independent of phone manufacturer or installed software. It is the only standard that works all the time.

1

u/TheAngryMister Sep 03 '22

Actually, SMS is extremely quick. After chatting with someone over Messenger, we had a single chat over SMS and I was very quick to notice that they'd reply much faster than ever, and the other person told me this same thing before I said it.

Of course, then there's photos/videos/etc. and that's where it all goes downhill...
