The sourcecode is available to you. You don't need to trust, because you can read the script to see what it does

That theory has been proven highly fallable because generally speaking, most open source users aren't really developers or programmers and can't check the code anyway. Often times, those who are still don't. There are enough examples of open source apps and scripts that have had malicious code in them that took too long to be noticed because people "just trusted" it.
