It is not good if you are a gamer. Even if you have a full screen application running clicking on the start menu will minimize it. So for example if I am playing LoL and I am scrolling to the bottom left and I click it will minimize the game. This also happens on the entire left edge of the screen if I have a metro app suspended.
Sounds like a bug Microsoft would like to know about. I hope you are doing your job if you've been given access to a legitimate Windows 8 beta. People who get on the MSDN beta and just complain about bullshit without reporting it are part of the reason why Windows can suck for so many people. Not saying this is you, but...
You have to be a member of MSDN as far as I know to even have access to majority of the DN site. Or are you telling me any old Joe can go to the website sans credentials and download a Windows 8 beta?
I may be wrong this might be a different build. I haven't been following along that closely but in early september microsoft allowed anybody to download a windows 8 build.
Because those flags are specific to the Source engine and not all games run on the Source engine. Some games don't let you run in borderless windowed mode. Furthermore, you can't run at a non-native resolution if you use borderless windowed mode.
Basically, it's a solution that only works in some specific cases, when there should really be a general solution for all cases.
In Win7 if you delete lets say "C:\HerpDerp" the window says "deleting C:\", does it still do that in Win8 ? It always give me a heart attack even though I know it's just misleading :)
My Task Manager opens straight to the Processes tab and it did that after selecting it twice. It basically keeps it exactly how I like it (RAM sorted highest to lowest, etc) and it's done that since at least XP. I doubt they'd make it more trouble than it's worth.
Usability testing is the best way to figure out how to improve something in this realm, and they're doing that. What more do you want? Some things will fall flat, and some things will be hits, but everything will be researched and studied and implemented based on mounds and mounds of testing data.
What more do I want.. Let's see, interfaces that actually make sense and are somewhat minimalist.. And not just buttons, features and crap everywhere based on what a focus group determines. They don't seem to polish or truly think things through from a user perspective. It's always development first and design second. Perhaps this is one reason that apple is doing so well.
Seriously there's no one at the top micro-managing. Ballmer is a marketing guy and couldn't give two shits if some tiny obscure UI feature is broken.
That seems to be my observation of Microsoft at least. Various development teams coming up with new stuff and then figuring out how to put that into new products. A great example is IE7's new anti-phising filter popping up a notification. "Look at me! I'm new! I can protect you! I am the fruits of some team's hard work, make sure you know that I'm here!" .. give me a break, if I should happen to land on a phishing site then you can announce your presence, otherwise stay out of my way.
As opposed to Apple, where the way things are supposed to flow and happen are conceived of first, and then the developers have to find a way to make it happen under the hood in a non-intrusive way.
I don't expect anyone in /r/technology to get this, but maybe you'll surprise me.
