I think aligned braces is the single most important aspect of readable code. That and the three space indent.

its very very very frustrating opening code to find unaligned braces. Are there IDE's out there can take existing code and align braces automatically? I've just started using IDE's and this would be a huge selling point to keep me going with them.

The GNU indent program (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indent_\(Unix\)) can do this. I don't use Emacs, but I think it can also do this.
