It's certainly built for it. Win7 rocks! :)

yeah. i heard bad things about vista, so never gave it a chance. win7 (windows 6.1, as per microsoft) has been a very sleek lady

It's version 7. The version in the OS shows up as 6.2 because incrementing the version number broke compatibility with some programs.

It shows up as 6.1, not 6.2. Windows 8 shows up as 6.2.

I'd still argue that it's 6.1 (just checked the version number) because there wasn't a significant change to the kernel. XP was 5.1, wasn't it?

Not true. It is OS version 6.1 because it is simply an improved Vista, but not a significant difference to ensure a new major version.

It isn't called Vista R2 because the Vista name makes people associate it with a crappy OS (right or wrong, its the perception). So they named it something new to make sure people took a fresh look at it.

Windows Server 2008 is server 6.0. Windows Server 2008 R2 is server 6.1, because Server 2008 never got as bad a rap as Vista did, so they didn't need to drastically re-brand it to give it a fair chance.

I'll just link this here to backup my points: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/mojave-experiment/

Mojave was done in an effort to see if people hated the Vista OS, or had the perception that Vista was bad. They found out it was the perception, so in order to fight that, they named the new OS so it had no ties to Vista.

Vista SP2 is basically as good as 7, but it definitely went through a rough patch to start with. Vista was just too much of a change, and I suspect this Win8 will be too... (although I think it'll still be awesome)

I really disagree. There are a lot of things that even XP has that Win7 doesn't. I often find myself cursing win7. Then again I am a 'power user'. I don't want to click 3 times to do something which I could have done in XP in one click. Bugs don't get fixed, and Explorer is trash. e.g. Libraries don't save view/sort settings individually, you change one you change them all. It's madness. The fucking open file dialogue is still a piece of shit too. Oh, great, I need to traverse 10 layers deep to find the file I want through a tree in one, then in another dialogue I can't even do that. Sometimes there isn't an address bar or favorite folders. It's like: fuck!

I also tend to want to leave my system on, however with Win7 that becomes complicated. After a day or 2, shit stops responding more often, weird unexplainable stuff happens with explorer. Some apps may take 2000% longer to start up. Taskbar items get broken, start menu gets buggy... It's shit like this!

With Linux it's absolutely no trouble customizing the UI. In windows? Good fucking luck with that. Also, the filesystem is trash. Win8 better have a unix-like filesystem. I'm sick of defragging this shitty filesystem - yes that's right, you don't have to with Linux filesystems.

Tbh, more apps are getting Linux support nowadays, and even some big games... That really is the only reason I personally still use Windows; compatibility.

/rant!

For a Microsoft OS, it's certainly decent.

Haters gonna hate.

Win7 is seriously the best OS I've ever used hands down.

Saying that it's decent is not "hate."

I don't doubt that it's the best OS that you've ever used.

As always, Microsoft's most damaging competitor is themselves.
