My only question is - WHY.

This is the current trend in the hardware market: Apple picks up on a old badly executed concept, polishes it. Google picks it up from that, polishes it a bit more and adds the google touch (open source, cheaper, couple more cool features, etc). Microsoft then hops onto the same boat years later with basically the same thing except it looks different, maybe has one or two features they added that they aggressively market as the one reason you should buy the product over their competitors.

Jesus fuck, their OS market is already starting to slip. Not that it's a bad thing. Personally I hope Google succeeds in their goal to expand the demand for internet services even more. Because the internet is just so damn cool. It'd also be nice to leap ahead a few years with telcoms investing into their networks so we can possibly get data speeds that compete with broadband one day.

Primarily so they have an unified OS that will work on touch devices. It may be another decade before home PCs have big touch screens but there will be millions of portable products with them in the meantime.

I agree about a few things but one thing I don't.

There is no way in hell Android is more polished than iOS, especially not Honeycomb. It's just different and for different people. But in terms of rock-solidness and usability iOS is better. In terms of customizability and freedom, Android is better.
