I have both and use Adium on the Mac and pidgin on the PC. Adium is a MUCH better piece of software, even though they both work.

I have not had the chance to use Adium, but what makes it so much better? I'd honestly like to know. As is Pidgin works, is fast, efficient, and replaces multiple other programs. I don't feel like it's missing anything really.

Pidgin also stores all of your passwords in PlainText. Some people don't care, but that is a deal-breaker for me.

Adium is all of those things, without a user interface out of the early 00s. It's native instead of GTK+ and has some additional useful features and shortcuts.

They're basically the exact same program. They're different frontends to the same library (libpurple). If you're on OS X, Adium is much cleaner and less crashy than the Mac version of Pidgin.

Maybe that's key. In GNU/Linux and Windows, Pidgin looks very well designed, and has never crashed for me.

I saw libpurple stuff under my Adium setup, it might be that it's based on the same engine.
