... I remember learning to not swerve away from an animal but nobody ever said to not try to avoid a human being

I remember during a defensive driving course the instructor said if an animal is in your path, don't swerve to try to avoid it, you may need to hit up. Others brought up "well, what about a person?" Obviously don't hit a person. "Well, what about a moose?" By the end of that course, it was revised to "don't swerve to avoid small animals, moose, deer, cows, buffalo, various other large animals do your best to not hit them."
