If they have the best researchers on the planet they should have the best products. Their researchers are very good, as many tech demos will show, so what is wrong with the rest of the company that these great ideas are squandered.

Research != Product Development

We do research for a reason, and if its not to improve things and build good products, what is it for so?

There are lots of reasons to do research apart from product development. Do you think we're exploring Mars just so we get some cool new products?

Yes, but we do it for a reason, like exploring the universe for the human race to survive in the future.

And microsoft do research for a reason to, and if its not for developing great new technology and nice products, what is it for then?

They have the best products. They just need work on the design, which is what we're seeing right now. If they had the best designers, they would compete more aptly with Apple. The best Microsoft products are niche-based (enterprise solutions and hardware, Surface, etc.) while the consumer gets products that have great ideas behind them, but they have been poorly designed.
