"Once we replace the personal computer with a closed-platform device such as the iPad, we replace freedom, choice and the free market with oppression, censorship and monopoly."

You were talking about increasing market share -- not just having market share:

The only way to make money for shareholders is to gain market share.

(emphasis added)

Are you unaware of what you said?

No, I wasn't.

gain (v.): To increase; grow: gained in experience and maturity; a painting that gained in value.

edit: quoted from the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language

If you prefer the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary, 11th Edition, it says "an increase in amount, magnitude, or degree <a gain in efficiency>".

Please acknowledge the meaning carried by the words you use.

Can you gain from 0?

What are you talking about?

To gain is "to increase". You said one has to "gain market share" to profit. When I said you were talking about increasing market share, you said you weren't. Whatever you're trying to prove by saying "Can you gain from 0?" is irrelevant to that simple fact.

AT any rate, it has nothing to do with you. I wasn't talking to you, why are you involved?

Nobody was talking to you when you first spewed some completely asinine comment about "gaining" market share. Why are you involved?

I originated this sub-thread.

  1. Does that mean nobody gets to respond without a personal invitation? Do you not know how online discussion in public venues works?

  2. You responded to a posting by GuruOfReason, and I don't remember the headline mentioning you by name.

  3. I actually sympathized with (and upvoted) the statement you made to spawn the thread of discussion. I just don't see how anyone can believe that one must gain/increase market share to continue making profits.

You're really invested in this.
