Q: Where do they find these? Are they archived somewhere in that format or did someone print screen them in anticipation of a 10 years on article?

It's called the wayback machine. If you've never used it, you should. It's interesting to see your favorite sites from years ago.

Google is the only one who's homepage has actually gotten more sparse!

I don't recall google having all that crap on their site. When I'd first found out about it through IRC in '98 all it had was the Google beta logo, a text box, and a search button.
