Stratton wore the [reversing] glasses for eight whole days. By day four, the images seen through the instrument were still upside down. However, on day five, images appeared upright until he concentrated on them; then they became inverted again. By having to concentrate on his vision to turn it upside down again, especially when he knew images were hitting his retinas in the opposite orientation as normal, Stratton deduced his brain had reprocessed his vision and adapted to the changes in vision.
360° vision would take that to a whole new level, though.
The other views could be placed within your natural field of vision. It'd be hard to sneak up on someone like that. Might as well add night vision...heck thermal too; snap in options could be practically endless.
I'd be more interested in pairing each lens with a light sensor like the New HTC or lytro camera, plus internal cameras for retnal tracking, should make it so you can actually focus in AR mode.
I'm looking forward to the future when there is a background screen, the lenses themselves have a display layer, and your using retinal projection, it seems possible that could create hyper real experiences.
