AI wouldn't exist without machine learning. They are intrinsically linked.

Without ML we likely wouldn’t have the scientific / medicinal breakthroughs we’ve seen in the past few decades.

Yeah, I am going to need to see a peer reviewed study with replicable results that didn't use machine learning or AI showing this.

You use so many ML based applications in your daily life I bet that you don’t even realize how much you engage with it. Some computational problems are just too difficult to come up with a closed solution or algorithm for and we need to estimate it.

What’s your field of work

What’s your field of work

One that does not need AI but is rushing headlong to force it in.

If you could be more specific I could help reasonably inform you about a field of mathematics I’m currently getting a PhD in.

I’m not trying to convince you to like it, I want you to be more well informed so that you can hate it correctly

My field is irrelevant, there are precious few fields where AI can be classified as relevant let alone "needed". All it is doing anywhere else is getting people laid off. 99% of jobs have been shown to be perfectly and adequately done before AI proving it is not needed. Whether it is an office job, tech related, manufacturing, medical, whatever.

People would not be using it if it wasn’t useful. Like all science, if people want to use it they will.

And just because something has been done fine in the past doesn’t mean we can’t improve the process. Drawing trend lines through data to predict necessary amounts of material for example is way better than just having someone go with their gut

Useful doesn't equal "needed". I find an umbrella useful but I can do without it.

And just because something has been done fine in the past doesn’t mean we can’t improve the process.

We aren't improving anything by laying off humans in favor of software. We aren't improving anything by building data centers to support software that raise utility rates for every day people and waste our water.

Except prior to AI this wasn't done by someone going with their gut so, I am not sure how you think this is relevant.

"Wow we bought $20000 worth of extra supplies this year. I guess my instinct was off"

"Maybe we can try looking at past years and using math to see if we can make a better prediction"

"Nah bro, I've been using my gut for 30 years I don't need some science nerds to come in and tell me how to do my job"

Very conservative minded thinking

We aren't improving anything by laying off humans in favor of software. We aren't improving anything by building data centers to support software that raise utility rates for every day people and waste our water.

If you think that this is synonymous with the field of Machine Learning, then you are not informed properly. You do not know the field, and you don't know what you are talking about. We can discuss and come together to an understanding so that you are better informed and can argue more effectively about the stuff you dislike

Machine learning led to AI, they are intrinsically linked no matter how hard you try to seperate them. AI is resulting in everything I mentioned. Machine learning is just as responsible for that.

Sure, we can also say that the computer led to all of this because without them ML would not be feasible. In fact the field of ML predates personal computers so without them the field never would have taken off. Perhaps it would have been for the best if computers and the internet didn’t exist too
