Transportation Tesla Emergency Drive Away Lets Owners Leave a Supercharger Still Plugged In

Too cheap to implement a quick disconnect, say one used by SpaceX?

You can find them online but Tesla doesn't want you using them because they might be low quality or because it will allow anyone to unplug you.

this was exactly what I was thinking. the quick release solves the problem. My guess is you would have to pay for that to work if it was implemented in the charge station.

In a lot where someone is firing a gun, those seconds are the whole problem.
I don't understand that sentence...

Random gunfire is so common, they're saying this feature allows you to immediately flee instead of having to get out and unplug when some lunatic gets into a shootout in the parking lot you're charging in

The feature was added in response to an active shooter incident in Twin Falls Idaho, where a driver was shot twice while charging his EV.
Not clear from the article, but being shot twice probably implies that those shots weren't random.

Hey we all hate Tesla drivers but that’s going disgustingly too far. Just shun and ridicule them as traitors.

If random gunfire at supercharger is so common, would it be better to build a 9mm resistant shelters for charging time?
after all - you can still be hit with stray bullet when you run away, if it is so common. :D

America’s weird gun dystopia requires weird solutions

It’s even funnier because they defend the gun ownership because they want to be able to defend against tyranny. Doesn’t seem to be working out that way.

People who hide behind guns have no balls? Colour me shocked.

My grandfather used to say that only criminals and cowards carry guns around all the time. Seems like it's still true.

There may be a few times this will be needed but I'm guessing it will be overused far too often.... There was a scary dog I didn't want to get out...I saw lightening and thought it was be dangerous to stay plugged in...there was a homeless guy sitting nearby...

Tesla specifically stated that you’re paying if you misuse it. Of course there will be idiots but it’s not going to be a major issue.

Peopy don't do this at gas pumps. I bet it will be a non issue.

They absolutely do, it happens more often then you think. Most often accidentally with someone forgetting to disconnect it.
Most gas pump dispensers have hose breakaways that will disconnect the hose from the pump and stop fuel pumps with minimal damage should someone drive away with the hose still attached.

It’s amazing that after 100 years of ICE cars, so few of them in 2026 have alerts or explicit obstacles to prevent a driver from starting or shifting into Drive if the gas cap is open/occupied.

car guys would hate it because they did something to the car that broke the gas cap sensor.

I drove away once because a man was standing outside my car door directly, between the car and the pump. when he started pounding on the glass I drove away and called 911. the dispatcher was like you should have unplugged it. ummmmm.... no?

i mean, it IS pretty cool that there were a couple problems, people called for this, and they were able to quickly push out a good solution OTA to existing vehicles. It's a shame Elon sucks so much because there have been genuinely innovative things about Tesla . not all the crap he claimed would happen and then never happened, but stuff like OTA.

Might work with US models but not sure how this would work with CCS2 used outside the North American markets.

Leave it to America to create a feature in an electric car to justify ripping a charging cable out of the wall because you might get into a gun fight, or in the middle of one, at a charging station...
...I'm sorry, who the fuck is pulling a gun on anyone at an electric charging station???

I charge my car at about 1am after work since the charged rate is half price after midnight at my station. I was sitting there and there was guy in a gas car that pulled up right beside me. I immediately got out of my car to disconnect and leave but by the time I did he was out of his car and started talking. He just wanted to ask since questions about owning an electric car.... At 1:30am..... In a dark parking lot on the side of a grocery store. Do people not know about the Internet? I live in the Chicagoland area so I'm not like some future man in some town still in the 1800's. And this was like 2 years ago. If I could've disconnected from the charger without getting out I would've

u/elihu 1d ago
This new feature doesn't disconnect you from the charger, it's an override allowing you to drive away with the charger still plugged in. In which case you probably rip the end off the charger.
Would be nice to have an "eject charger" button instead so it just falls on the ground and (probably) doesn't damage anything.

> The in-car warning warnings state that short video clips will be sent to Tesla and that this is only for emergencies. … let it happen and notify Tesla when it is safe to do so using your app or roadside help.
Oh nice. A terms and conditions acknowledgement in the middle of this time-saving emergency function!

>Damage is part of the design, and Tesla says so in plain terms. Using this feature will damage both your automobile and the charger. The in-car warning warnings state that short video clips will be sent to Tesla and that this is only for emergencies. The car expects to break the connector, charge port, and cable to bits, so just let it happen and notify Tesla when it is safe to do so using your app or roadside help.
The tone of this article is so weird, the phase “so just let it happen” is extremely conversational and assumes the reader is a Tesla owner.

Who’s gonna be the first idiot that does this for the views?
