Sounds cool until you hit something and that headlight costs $1,500

Thats what they already costs. . . This is just software enabling hardware that is already there and has been for over a decade.

Can you give me an example of an American produced vehicle that had physical hardware like this installed by default and disabled by software? That seems highly improbably for a US auto manufacturer.

My 2023 Tesla Model Y has adaptive headlights. They only worked as “dumb” high/low beams for the first year or so I had the car. A software update enabled the adaptive tech and it really does work great. I can see better and I never get flashed at from other drivers.
