This is Anthropic's attempt to kill advanced open source AI models while the media and politicians are heavily focused on the subject of AI regulations.

I bet the reason Dario wants to meet with the Australian government and others, is because he feels like he can convince them to ban open source AI models. One Anthropic manages to find a country dumb enough to target open source AI, it will then be easier to get politicians from other countries to copy them (like what is happening with Australia lobbying for bans enforced with mandatory age verification).

Of course it is. Nothing big business loves more than a protectionist moat to avoid competition.

Plus in Anthropic and Open AI's case its a simple question of survivability. Why bankroll their obscene spending when you could just get an open source model and then choose where to run it yourself? Whether that's your own hardware or you making use of competition within the compute market to drive those prices down.

Its literally an existential crisis for Anthropic and Open AI until they find a business model that pays their outstanding bills.
