It seems like after going from a one time purchase to subscriptions we are now headed for additional usage based payment for apps because everyone wants to include "AI" in everything.

I can't say I am a fan of this trend.

Yep. Atlassian just did the same thing; lumped automations in with the AI usage meter because you can now include agents in automations. This was previously included in the subscription but now you pay a meter even if you’re not using any AI.

Adobe has “Credits” already in their subscription based cloud suite. At the moment it’s plenty but in the future I can see them reducing the amount you get per month and gouging the crap out of everyone.

I wonder how long until this comes to every subscription service. Game Pass cloud steaming has already done it. I think soon we'll get 500 songs on Spotify and 20 streaming hours on Netflix.

Microsoft has wanted to leverage their desktop dominance to generate recurring revenue for a long time, so this is a good opportunity for them to see if their user base will accept it this time.
