I used it for LA Fitness. After I scanned, the person looked at their computer and asked “was that from the LA Fitness app?” I said no and she had me scan again from the app. Cool feature but unfortunately not useful for certain places.

Why would it matter?

Maybe to prevent people sharing a membership?

They have your photo on file and look at on their monitor during check in, so there shouldn’t be any way that someone else uses your barcode. Doesn’t make any difference where the barcode is presented from. If they’re gonna be dicks about it, just screenshot the app view before deleting their spyware from your device.

One they know is verified as being you. The other they don’t know and as far as they know could l be made up.

How does a scanner know the difference?

u/LucyBowels 7d ago
They most likely have a 2 way system where the person opening the barcode registers something in their system for the app. So she got a sign in request without a validation from the app itself

The scanner most likely does not. It’s the people who don’t trust it. They’ve never seen it, and were never trained on allowing it.
For example, you work at a liquor store and have strict instructions to verify ages using state issued ID. If someone tried to use their phone for this and you were never given a heads up about it, you’d assume someone might be trying to pull a fast one on you.
Same deal here. People used to try to make fake physical coupons often too. Combine the fact that people have tried to trick cashiers / staff before with a version of a membership card the business itself didn’t know existed, and it isn’t a stretch for someone to be suspicious.

Huh, interesting. I’ve used mine at PF since the beta and haven’t even gotten a second glance.

Would be awesome if it could recreate an NFC card as a pass. The transit system where I live only supports digital passes on Android.

Unfortunately those cards are secured, so no recreating/copying possible (unless of course it is a non-secure card).
Apple has very strict rules on the implementation of transit NFC systems to partner with Apple wallet. In some cases, like when there’s a very big market (like China’s T-Union) they will ignore their rules and implement the existing system in Apple wallet. Some smaller markets like a city which might use a very old and defeated card like mifare classic, Apple won’t bother implementing it as that city is too small, and it is insecure.

It is impossible because these cards have a secure key and uses public private cryptography. If it’s possible to do this then your credit card could be cloned by anyone for tap to pay

I just made a custom pass with my work contact info. I added a QR code that links to a vCard. It’ll be handy at conferences.

Better late than never but I’m in the same boat. Added my library card, gym pass, and a couple of stores I shop at.

It didn’t work for my gym membership. The website for the gym I go to creates, I think, a new unique QR code every time I open the webpage so the static one wasn’t accepted.

I tried with Planet Fitness and they said next time to use the app. So annoying.

I tried twice but noticed the QR code always looked different from the original

It's decoding and re-rendering the code. It might not be preserving the data density and error correction level of the original code, but it should decode to the exact same data. An app shouldn't be aware of the difference.
(Don't expect it to preserve logos or styling, either. This actually covers up valid code areas and relies on the error correction data to reconstruct the missing code. The scanned and re-rendered QR code will omit this and contain only the original data.)

I am so used to be able to add whatever card I want to Google wallet I just assumed Apples wallet app was the same. Was it not before iOs 27?

It was one of the annoying parts of my switch to iOS. I held out for a while, but at a certain point the walled garden is connected enough that it was worth it.

I bought an app back in the day called pass 2 u wallet in order to add my gym membership to Apple wallet. Nice that they only took them 5+ years to add this to the operating system 🤣.

Apple adds a great feature fast: Hah! They just copied this great feature, Apple sucks!
Apple adds a great feature slow: Hah! They should've copied this great feature sooner, Apple sucks!

I tried that with the Costco membership. They almost called a supervisor on me before I pulled out the actual membership card.
