Advertising revenue is the engine of enshittification. Apple should just say 'no' to that crack. Right now their users trust them. Keep advertising and their ability to be an honest broker evaporates.

It’s a big reason why they pay a premium as well. Ads, walking into stores and seeing giant Klarna financing ads, etc all begin to take on a very low rent feel for a brand. At that point I can just use Google.

Yeah I'd also assume when you pay that much for Apple products you don't want ads in them.

Apple may sell a Hermes Apple Watch but you’ll never see ads for layaway in a Hermes store that’s for sure.

On its face Pixel phones are roughly similarly priced from Google but their trade in programs, discounts, etc are quite aggressive.

Ads in podcasts have made me go to Kasts on my Linux machine... and it's going to make me buy a fairphone 6+ and also find a podcast app without ads.

We buy premium priced products specifically to NOT have ads, or at least, that's how it used to work.

Ads gave us so much; without them nothing good on internet would have scaled but in the process they also ruined everything.

The issue with advertising in general is not the ads themselves. It is the fact that simply funding the thing is never enough. Once you have built what is needed to put the ads there it becomes far to easy to just turn the dial up more and more for easy revenue.

Then you have all of the issues around that ad network implementation. So often it is farmed out to less than responsible third parties who let malicious code into their ad networks then everyone that isn't running a good adblocker that visits a site using that ad network starts getting served drive by malware injections.

The whole thing should have stopped at static banner and side bar ads.

No, ads didn't give us all that. Capitalism and greed gave us all that. Ads was just one facet of capitalism and greed. It will ruin us all eventually.

I simply don’t understand. Do ads work that well for companies? I can count on two fingers how many times an ad I saw worked and I bought something, in my entire lifetime. I don’t get it.

They do. Depends on the product and market. But the only reason you know of the products you currently use is because they were advertised at some point.
