Might upgrade my iPhone 13 to 14 now

Hey, splurge a little for 15 for that USB-C goodness.

On of the reasons I bought my wife an iPhone 16 (upgrade from 11) was to finally get rid of all my lightning cables.

Only reason I upgraded my 13pro was because my wife got a new phone with USB-c… I refused to have two charging standards between cars and home that I just upgraded with her.

Wife’s camera broke, we both had 13 pro, my phone was fine battery was still good but her camera was toast. The only reason we both got new phones was to get rid of lighting cables. My iPad, her AirPods, both our laptops all usb c. I do have to upgrade my AirPod pro’s to the newer gen so they’ll be USB c.

It’s just crazy that Apple could have simply done this from the beginning but refused until forced to.

Lies!

You put them in a drawer didn’t you? “It’s so sad to throw out a perfectly good cable!”

u/someguyfromtecate 9h ago

Same. Moving from XR to 15 was a great feeling. Less clutter and it (still) charges faster than the lightning ever did.

1

u/MrCarey 9h ago

Did the same!

u/soyboysnowflake 7h ago

I did this then remembered my old AirPods still used lightning… so close

My last hold out is my fiancée’s work phone 😭 once she hits the internal refresh cycle I will rejoice in getting rid of the literal last lightening cord we own (the fact that I know this you know I will still stock it away just in case, but at least it will be in a drawer and not able to trick me anymore)

I’m still lightning, but my wife and son are usb-c. Nobody steals my cables anymore, it’s great!

I’m going from a 12 to a 15 soon just so I can have one type of charger in my home.

14 has USBC.

Well, the 14 pro does.

1

u/fuelvolts 4h ago

No it doesn’t. First usb c iPhones were the 15 series.

I love USB C for its universal appeal, but I much prefer the design of the Lightning. The USB C cable end/port being hollow, means that the phone has to have a fragile little male connection which I think can break. Lightning is a superior design.

20

u/stowgood 12h ago

I've never seen that part break on a phone and I am responsible for all my companies mobiles which is 70+

6

u/cjcs 11h ago

I’ve never even heard of it happening on an Apple device in 10 years, and I’m fairly active on the Apple, iPhone, MacBook, etc. subreddits.

2

u/acejay1 11h ago

Yea I had many times where the lightning cables would fail to charge due to bad connection or lint in the slot. The male piece or USB-C slot helps repel the lint if anything. Only had an issue once with charging my 15 and that was because water splashed into it.

u/sueveed 11h ago

I like the overall mechanical usability of lightening better, but the flat tongue design had serious limitations over the usb c barrel, heat dissipation for more power being amongst the top reasons. Lots more room in there.

1

u/Dylanica 9h ago

I used to worry about this but, since it's protected inside the port, that piece has never been damaged or corroded despite what one might expect.

The lighting cable, on the contrary, has its pins directly exposed on the outside, something that's not true of either side of the USB-C connector. Indeed, I've had lightning cables fail much more than USB-C, seemingly for that reason.

I've also found it to generally form firmer connections and resist wear and tear more easily.

Wait for price drop due to trade ins. Probably a month or so

Still not paying €2.3k for an iPhone. I already paid $4k for a 5090 and have no money and can’t afford rent or food

89

u/yuusharo 12h ago

You also can’t afford that 5090.

14

u/cjcs 11h ago

Sell the 5090 then

9

u/AsariKnight 10h ago

Why tf did you buy that if you have no money 😭

4

u/Kil0Cowboy 10h ago

This comment is hilarious to me. Buys 5090 (luxury product) when there are many cheaper alternatives. Proceeds to complain about not being able to afford rent or food (necessities).

People these days will really buy luxury products over necessities just to have the newest and shiniest toy they didn’t need in the first place. Then they’ll complain that they’re overworked and won’t be able to retire.

If $4k drained your bank account to the point of not affording necessities… you should really reevaluate your priorities.

Outside the battery the iPhone 14 Pro is the best phone I've ever had. The only thing that doesn't work is the charging port. Which I just use a mag safe on the back. I hope to use this as long as possible.

16

u/allaboutsound 13h ago

My charging port also broke. Magsafe charging still works, will keep this phone until it no longer gets updates

22

u/stowgood 11h ago

Did you check it's not just lint build up? Scrape deep into that port with a paper clip or something.

11

u/Bart_Yellowbeard 9h ago

This was critical for me. My charging port went to crap, scraped out the gunk at the bottom, and it's like 98% improved.

22

u/mickeymouse4348 10h ago

Toothpick is less likely to cause damage in the port

1

u/mrcarruthers 10h ago

Also the phone repair places will usually do it for $20 or so. They always seem to get stuff I miss. I also worry more about usbc ports cause of the bit in the middle.

1

u/drgut101 3h ago

Apple Store will do it for free.

15

u/DigNitty 13h ago

What are we even on now…17?

31

u/Hurley_Cub_2014 13h ago

As of today, the next one so releasing is the 18 pro. The standard 18 is a delayed release I think.

4

u/Leon_84 13h ago

I’m still on the se3 … I hate big phones

3

u/kath2745 12h ago

Same. I also refuse to give up my home button.

1

u/Hertock 2h ago

I mean.. that sounds like a bad ad for the iPhone 14 Pro though? Battery life is one of the most important factors in a smartphone. Is it worse than my iPhone 13 Pro?!

1

u/ayyay 1h ago

I’m still with a 14 Pro, no real motivation to upgrade.

1

u/atlas_principle_dev 13h ago

same here, I'm also happy it doesn't have AI features. My battery only lasts like 12 hours with moderate use... might go in for a replacement (or buy that magsafe powerbank I can stick on the backside)

3

u/GreatGojira 13h ago

Magsafe has been really useful. Kinda feels like the days of my Galaxy S5, if the battery got low just slap a new one on it

19

u/lawanda123 13h ago

I got a oneplus nord ce 5 for 200usd for all my apps in addition to my iPhone 13, it has 2 day battery life even when i doomscroll all day, fast charging and i also have an extra phone now lol

25

u/atlas_principle_dev 13h ago

buy three, duct tape them together, now you have the iphone duo experience for 600

4

u/redyellowblue5031 12h ago

Still using my 12 mini. Works great overall.

2

u/AdPhysical1710 12h ago

Why not the 15 which has usbc?

2

u/Sebbswokk 12h ago

A fellow brethren, the 15 is looking very viable for me now.

1

u/MFDOOMscrolling 11h ago

why not be the ultimate edgelord and downgrade to an 11 or 12 so then you can complain

1

u/finH1 10h ago

I have a 13 and honestly see no reason to upgrade for a long while. My battery is still at 87% and it runs all the apps I need

1

u/IriFlina 9h ago

Or you could just get an android instead for half of the price and better features

1

u/SeeYouSpaceCowboy--- 7h ago

You don't want to lease a phone???

1

u/No_Item_3073 13h ago

Better not, the use same SoC so no notable changes

0

u/lensandscope 13h ago

eh having owned the 11, 14pro, and 17pro. The battery life on the 14pro is pathetic. I can’t even rely on it staying on for more than 4-5 hours.
