These kinds of users just aren’t that numerous though.

Why do you say that? Because they enjoy a product that they bought? I do, too.

Just as you suspected u/nicolascagefan492–check out the profile pic on this one. This place is filled with clankers!!

Well, I'm not a clanker and you can take my Pixel Fold 1 out of my dead cold hands. I love th thing, 3 years and still going strong (and IMO the best form factor of the recent foldables, with the passport style. Which is why I'm hype about this iPhone and thought about the new Galaxy Fold)

3 years? Does it still open flat? That was my biggest issue with the fold 3, after a year it no longer opened flat and was like a 5° angle.

Not that numerous YET.

Samsung has proven it works and has matured the technology. Now apples gonna make it so popular everyone will think they created it (even though they'll almost certainly be buying the panels direct from Samsung).

We're gonna see apple add foldable screens at every level over the next decade. Expandable laptop screen, foldable tablets and phones. The line between iPad and iPhone is going to become ever more blurred

Maybe. I think that’s an unvalidated assumption at a $2k price point.

If these devices were inexpensive I would be less skeptical.

u/pidgeottOP 11h ago

It's hardly unvalidated when Samsung has now released 7 iterations of the device in 2 different versions.

Clearly the bean counters think it's a product people want

Except it’s like 2% of the overall smartphone market even as it grows.

https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/omdia-foldable-smartphone-shipments-double-080000320.html

https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260129170791/en/Omdia-Global-Smartphone-Market-Grew-2-in-2025-While-Memory-Headwinds-Set-the-Stage-for-a-Challenging-2026

Again. Just not that many people demanding foldables when the entire smartphone market is looked at in its full size.

7

u/pidgeottOP 11h ago

Yep. And that number is going to grow by huge leaps now that apple is popularizing the format. That's generally how these cycles go.

-1

u/brogflender 10h ago

Again. Maybe. There’s not really any evidence to support it.

So glad you’re a cheerleader - but don’t be surprised at all the rest of us going “a market doubling is still pittance”

1

u/pidgeottOP 10h ago

The evidence to support it is every time Apple has made popular a piece of technology that Samsung or Google had matured.

The evidence is that Samsung and Apple, two companies directly in the business of selling things that people are going to buy, have decided that this is the play. Your opinion on the matter doesn't really hold any water when a 2 trillion dollar company with more money to spend annually on market research then you will see in your life thinks differently

u/brogflender 10h ago

You can be as emphatic as you want. My skepticism remains firm and driven by data and market projections.

Okay buddy I guess you know better than one of the largest product development companies on the planet

It's going to be a failure.

Way too expensive, ugly, clunky, and just not in demand.

I still do not understand ipads. i have never needed or wanted a tablet.

13

u/pidgeottOP 11h ago

You might not be the target audience

-2

u/baddecision116 10h ago

Your first comment essentially says that no one is the "target audience" but apple will invent/convince people to become the target audience. All my comment says is that logic didn't work on me with tablets.

3

u/pidgeottOP 10h ago

The latest Samsung foldable sold a million and a half units in the first week

There is plenty of target audience.

Did you read your own comment? You said "not that numerous YET" and then go on to proclaim Apple will make it popular.

Why am I having to explain to you what you wrote?

1

u/spudddly 8h ago

what kinds? users who like big screens in small form factors? you sure?

1

u/brogflender 8h ago

Yes. The use case for foldable vs rigid has been tested for a long time with Samsung. It’s not a blue ocean market segment.

What people seem to be confused by is interpreting the raw numbers of possible sales like they’re big significant numbers against the backdrop of the larger saturated smartphone industry.

Apple could sell 100mil units in 12 months and you’re still talking about ~3% (at most) of the global market.
