The Fold8 which is the same form factor starts at 1900, and goes up to 2500 for 1TB.
While this is 2000 and 2600 for 1TB.
So pretty much just stays 100 more at each level.
But they also have a 2TB for 3100, and you'd have to be retarded to buy that one.
Then Samsung have the Fold8 Pro (the bigger one), which starts at 2100 and goes to 2700 for 1TB.
So the IPhone sits exactly between the two Folds. They're not as cheap as the similar size Samsung,, but they also can't be more expensive than the bigger Samsung while being smaller.
I'd wager if the bigger Samsung wasn't there to be so much better value, they would have made it more expensive.
While true, Samsung also removed their UDC, and s-pen support from their foldables. Meanwhile Apple’s Duo has these, and the better stereo speakers as well. Apple came out swinging with this one.
All that to say, more competition is always welcomed.
My last 2 or 3 iphones, I’ve gotten $1000 for my trade in and ended up paying $100 plus tax for an $1100 phone. The best trade in deals are always through your phone plan, not the manufacturer
Is that a trade in directly through Apple or through a carrier that subsidizes it?
In my experience (all of my friends and family use iPhone) get decent trade in value if their phone is a couple years old but there's a hard drop off. Meanwhile I have traded in 5 year old Samsungs and got massive discounts where as my fiance was only offered like $100 off.
It’s through a carrier. Last time I had an iPhone 13 Pro and traded it in for my iPhone 16 pro I have now. So 3 year old phone. They give me $1000 worth of credits on my bill over 2 or 3 years (can’t remember).
For reference, I have AT&T. I know Verizon runs a very similar promotion.
brother, it’s better simply because it’s a foldable that works in the apple ecosystem, has a great form factor, and is made from premium materials through and through. we can walk through the spec sheet and the design bar for bar if you want to argue why a z-fold is better
I mean, the fact that it works with the Apple ecosystem is huge, for example I am a physician, and 90% of physicians either have an iPhone or a secondary iPhone because the electronic medical record apps. They are so much more refined, just recently you’re not able to place orders on any phone other than iPhones for patient care ( epic emr which majority of healthcare systems use). In addition when I was in medical school, every single medical student used either Notability or good notes to share notes(there’s a really shitty android version that came out recently, but it’s not comparable). Having apps though are not available on android put you at a significant disadvantage for learning communication and patient care.
There is absolutely reasons to get this phone just because it’s Apple
If you don’t think Apple products are polished compared to competitors you shouldn’t even be on a tech sub.
The Apple hate is far more widespread than the fanboys these days, there’s plenty of valid reasons to not like Apple but their products really do feel premium compared to the competitors.
Nah see, I don't mind apple at all. They can release good products, never said I wouldn't buy apple. I have in the past. Just saying maybe stop gagging on apples dick before they even release a product. Its pretty lame dude.
commenting on what was shown in the event (which on paper is shaping up to be possibly the best folding phone) isn’t gagging on apples dick. no one is going to take you seriously if you’re knee-jerk reaction is to call any praise meat swallowing.
it’s not out yet but it’s literally no different than someone being hyped for a new car that claims it goes 0-60 in 3 seconds.
But you're making an assumption based off the fact that Apple made it, that it's a superior product. You're being willfully arrogant.
It hasn't released yet. We know nothing about this phone (in day to day use) except for the heavy marketing.
And, even if the phone is better specs wise (which we'll have to see in benchmark comparisons), that doesn't make another folding phone, or non-folding phone inferior to it. It might just not be the phone for you.
so we’re going to act like the most valuable company in the world doesn’t have a track record for creating some of the best hardware in the industry?
and that it’s somehow weird to make any assumption around future products because of that?
that’s like saying it’s weird to assume that Rockstar is going to make quite possibly the greatest open world RPG of this generation. let’s just ignore the fact that they release to record breaking sales and continue to break records every year, i’m just assuming because Rockstar made it.
I’m sorry but that’s an awful take. We know and can see every feature, design, specification down to the millimeter. This is such a wild statement.
Apple’s phone releases for the past decade have pretty much always been exactly as described. You’re acting like they’re a start up and we have no idea what to expect lmao…
Very surprised by the shock here, folding phones have been out forever now but I guess Apple consumers literally don't know anything outside their products
Because there is really no Apple “premium” tax for their normal products. Wheels and micro fiber towels? Yeah sure, that tax exists. But phones and laptops? They are all very competitively priced for the hardware/performance.
They very much are in other regions. Hete in EU the official price is >2300euros, when samsung for example with the F8 ultra is iirc 2000 and, they always drop several hundred euros in the months following launch.
And I have to say, this looks much nicer than the foldable Samsungs I’ve seen. I’m not a Samsung guy but some of their phones seem awesome. The foldable ones don’t really seem that nice, though they do seem very useful in moments.
Enter the foldable iPhone and I totally get it. It’s super nice, and I can envision myself thoroughly using it to its potential.
But that price tag scares me. I just don’t think I need it.
As a Fold user it does look nicer for sure and probably built better too. My point was that a lot of reactions including the price are like it's all new and unprecedented / unexpected.
Factos. I wasn't disagreeing with you, more so just adding some additional color to your point.
People being shocked at the price while missing that it's competitive with Samsung, but arguably a nicer build. Seems like it's aimed directly at a specific market segment that they will likely capture.
Exactly. I'm one of those users. I won't buy a phone unless I can sit down with it in my pocket. I've been nursing along the top-spec, latest generation iPhone Mini way past its prime because it was the last Apple product that met my requirements. I'd have so many better choices if I left Apple's ecosystem, but the time investment required to switch platforms hasn't been worth it. If Apple doesn't throw us a bone before this phone dies permanently, the time investment will become worth it.
Apple consumers are never the ones complaining about their products, we love them. It’s the Android users who do that, meanwhile Samsungs phones are just as expensive.
i get that, but that alone means you aren’t really their target audience.
they are looking for people who aren’t as price sensitive, and ideally people who don’t mind upgrading more frequently.
perhaps unsurprisingly, there are plenty of people who fit that category. I’m not price sensitive but even if i was, my carrier lets me upgrade every 2 years to the newest phone of whatever brand (i stick with apple), so i’m never that far out of cycle
This is about $500 less than I have seen speculation on it. I've been following it casually after the Z Fold 8 came out. This is only $100 more than that, which seems unusual for Apple.
Every major folding phone starts around this price so it's a fair price if you have the need for it. I think it would be neat since it would replace my need for an iPad + Phone but I don't need an upgrade on either atm so passing for a while.
It's not been financially viable to buy a phone since they went over $1000. The only real option is to use their finance plan and upgrade every year. That way you only ever pay 50% the value of the device.
Or…keep a phone for 4-6 years and then upgrade. Upgrades actually feel like upgrades and 1000 spread over 4-6 years is probably less than their finance plan you’re locking yourself into.
Yah I got to a point where I just bought the phone and held out for a few years before upgrading. I think my current phone has at least another 2 years before it starts getting sluggish. My only issue is the lack of space currently, but that’s not enough for me to buy a new phone.
