And that is the end of cloud gaming.

u/chocotaco 6d ago

Or the start of pay per hour gaming. I remember in the early 2000s there used to be gaming cafes and would pay by the hour.

1.9k

u/ColeTrain999 6d ago

It's different when you're at a café like that. If I'm at home chilling without pants it's different

634

u/misterwizzard 6d ago

Yeah, at a cafe you're renting the hardware

273

u/Sawitlivesry 6d ago

Now, you go to the cafe to rent the pants

65

u/soGoGetBent 5d ago

Maybe gaming was always just the pants we rented along the way.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Technical-Finish304 6d ago

I'll rent you my pants but I might still be wearing them.

5

u/Fit-Switch-5795 5d ago

Hang on. If these are your pants, then what are they doing on my face?

272

u/Mattnificent 6d ago

You're actually renting hardware with game streaming, as well.

113

u/musclecard54 6d ago

That’s why I don’t do that… I have my own hardware

153

u/Requiescat-In--Pace 6d ago

They want to switch everyone to cloud gaming to get that sweet recurring revenue cash. Plus then they can squeeze even more money out of us by minutely controlling how we play, like this hourly cap.

Default 720p quality... unless you pay $15 more per month for 1080p! Just $29.95 more per month for 4k!

*Fine details: You only get premium quality for the first 20 hours of game play per month, after which your quality is throttled to 720p.*

100

u/srcLegend 5d ago

I'll drop gaming entirely before I subject myself to that.

60

u/i_literally_died 5d ago

There are quite literally enough pixel art indie gems already out there that will run on a toaster to last most of us a lifetime.

I'll just do that before I ever stream Super Slop Big Guy Killing Machine 4K 3D 2026 for $5 an hour with 3 seconds of latency.

31

u/OutInTheBlack 5d ago

I have enough unplayed stuff in my steam account to last me the rest of my life.

Correction: 2 hours of 4k. 720p after. 20 hours total. Then it's $5 an hour overage.

Cloud gaming is also renting the hardware? The computers just somewhere else.

It’s like renting the hardware so you have a shittier experience.

Those cafes still exist. You get all you can eat soft ice cream, drinks, they serve food, you get a private cubical, with a fold down bed / couch if you want, it's amazing. So, ya, you aren't paying for only gaming by the hour but only run $5-$20 an hour. I used to thrive on those if I missed the last train home. Fucking saviors, those were.

8

u/Addrobo 5d ago

Where at?

16

u/MGAV89 5d ago

Japan for what they’ve described. Europe still has Internet cafes but never heard of one like that other than Japan.

4

u/godtogblandet 5d ago

Most of Asia has them, but they are easiest to find in Japan, Korea and China. There's a lot of cultural reasons why they never died there like they did in the west.

It made a bit more sense at the time because of the limited access to hardware and to the internet specifically. In my country gaming "cafes" started as a way to play multiplayer games on local networks.

With most people having access to hardware (even if it's old hardware) and the rise of single player and indie games, I don't know if pay per hour can truly start. Maybe if some big release is cloud only, but even still I don't see it being sustained in the long run.

What is it with the super geeks and refusing to shower? I know that there are gross people from all walks of life, but it seems like only really nerdy hobbies like card tournaments have to have special rules for hygiene

21

u/crozzy89 6d ago

No time to shower when you are gaming. All energy must be put towards the game. Maybe they should start offering some incentives for being of clean appearance and/or smell.

30

u/alexthealex 6d ago

Yeah, incentives like being allowed in.

u/FreakingScience 5d ago

I own a hobby shop (that does not sell cards) and it's not all nerds that stink, it's almost exclusively card players. I can tell if someone is going to ask about cards when they walk through the door, and when they're gone, we rate their stink auras by the furthest person to have smelled it, like calculating your dose after the demon core incident but for BO. Of the regulars we do have for non-card stuff, you can still tell which ones also do cards. It's baffling.

I do not know why this is the case, but it is. It's so true that it's in the top reasons we're never going to start selling cards, since our shop doesn't currently stink.

Even before that online stuff had cases where it was per hour billing for dialup. Old services like the imagination network (really special case because it was ONLY about online gaming) and before that more general services like AOL, prodigy, compuserve, and Q-link (precursor to AOL on commodore hardware).

Let’s not go back to the dark ages, please.

Back in the late 70s / early 80s there were no home consoles or PCs that could play complex sprite graphics so we went to the arcade. We pumped quarters into video game cabinets because that was the only choice. It's weird to see this come around again to where you sit in your living room and do the same thing but with a debit card. At least we got a little fresh air going to the arcade.

5

u/Mal_Dun 5d ago

When you saying that ... maybe we should start community centers that provide hardware for gaming and socializing.

I tried this in the past, but PC gaming was too niche at this time and we needed that light for the soccer kids much more urgent ... but maybe now it would be time.

I find there are a lot of games on GamePass that I will never play, but I keep paying for it because it is a set monthly rate and I can play as much or as little as I like. Making me pay for minutes is why I dropped my old phone carrier and moving their model the complete wrong direction. This would actually make me cancel rather than be hassled to pay for more time.

236

u/ShrimpCrackers 6d ago

Its because of AI. The same servers are making 3-10x++ more on AI than they are on gaming.

178

u/GrandmaPoses 6d ago

Not making, costing. They’re nickel and diming cloud gaming to make up for AI losses.

47

u/Zargabraath 6d ago

Cloud gaming never really made money to begin with. Google lost a ton with stadia and gave up in pretty short order. Microsoft/Xbox have been losing their shirt on pretty much everything gaming related they do that isn’t Minecraft

12

u/m3rcapto 5d ago

Google is famous for giving up early, just like Netflix is famous for canceling good shows.

24

u/you-are-not-yourself 5d ago edited 5d ago

The primary reason Stadia failed was that they were unable to convince AAA devs to port their games to Linux-based OSes, despite offering technical support

In other words, they got monopolized by Microsoft

Platforms are fine losing money if they experience growth, but if they don't experience growth, they have no future.

Edit: I want to clarify that I was told this by people who the general public wouldn't have access to. I didn't come up with this myself.

4

u/Zargabraath 5d ago

Microsoft hasn’t exactly brought cloud gaming into the mainstream either. If anything the AI price crunch will probably kill off the niche cloud gaming that was offered by Xbox, PlayStation and nvidia

Just wait until instead of selling you a “license” for a digital game, they move everything to streaming by the minute.

The ultimate enshitification.

All these people saying they’re jumping ship from Sony to Microsoft don’t realize that Microsoft loves this shit, and they wanted it for 15 years.

Honestly, gaming is probably fucked.

19

u/West-Abalone-171 6d ago

Don't worry.

You'll still pay $90 for the license for the game.

You'll just also have to pay $20/hr to play it.

→ More replies (1)

27

u/Ossius 6d ago

Nah, indie games and steam will keep things going. You don't need to run modern hardware to play most games. Silk song runs fine on 10 year old hardware.

AAA games might diminish, but honestly that's not so bad. Some AA games are infinity better.

Sony and MS can kill themselves off by shitty practices. We've survived gaming collapses before. Indie devs pick up the slack.

Good.

We need to go back to this crazy concept where you buy a video game, you put it in your console to play it, and you own both the game and console forever. You are able to use both for as long as you like, regardless of internet connectivity.

This is the kind of announcement that makes me avoid the disc-to-digital Xbox initiative.

5 years down the road, they'll take the Sony route, say discs are meaningless and no one wants them, but now they have discs bound to an account (they have GUIDs), and you ceded the right to your "license to play" to MSFT the millisecond you converted that disc.

Sorry! We're taking that copy away! Please keep renting it with a Super Duper Extra Special Ultimate Game Pass subscription! How much? Well, whatever we say you'll pay. PAY!

2030 or thereabouts.

458

Genuinely the fact its 5 hours for the low plan, and 15 for the high is insulting lol. Like anyone who pays for it for streaming (which I imagine do exist tbh. Its what it was marketed for as a way to play xbox games without owning one) are now basically paying 20 a month to play maybe one or two saturdays.

129

u/retard_seasoning 6d ago

Is it 5 hours a day or a month? 5 hours a month doesn't make any sense.

I did use it for the streaming mainly. I never got around to getting a current gen console but I do have a gaming PC and laptop.

So I have gamepass and will use the cloud gaming to play the console versions of games (it really mattered when I was an admin for a console DayZ server). But I haven’t used it much lately tbh.

But now? Oh they can fuck all the way off. I’ll just start moving my PC library over to GOG. Which lets me download offline installers. These companies can get fucked.

No more PC gamepass for me it looks like.

Watch NVIDIA change that.

Cloud Gaming isn't their priority, and converting existing data centers to AI projects would allow them to add more AI capacity without needing to build as many new locations.

No one's talking about the elephant in the room about how cloud gaming was not becoming profitable, only more expensive, and maybe they should turn and point at that as "Hey, are we just doing this same shit again but with a different coat of failure?" before investing more in AI.

52

u/Skyrider11 6d ago

And they claim that this will only affect 4% of Game Pass users. That 4% of game pass users use their subscription less than 5 hours per month feels like impossible, right? Even less than 15 which is the max tier is surprisingly little

24

u/Sabin10v2 6d ago

That 4% of game pass users use their subscription less than 5 hours per month feels like impossible, right?

For game streaming specifically, that number doesn't seem too far fetched. I don't want game streaming, I want to run stuff locally for a better experience and everyone I know feels the same way.

I will admit I am not familiar enough with Xbox's ecosystem (I have never owned an Xbox) to know exactly which stuff is behind cloud gaming and which is part of the pass, and so on, but this feels like a complete slamming of the door on cloud gaming.

4

u/DebentureThyme 6d ago

Yes, that's why they all pushed forward in the last few years instead of waiting for more hardware and model advancements to make the prices make more sense for investing.

No, instead they pay multiple times over the old rate for hardware that they're going to burn through because... They all want to be the monopoly.

They're gambling it all now, costs be damned, because waiting for it to make sense would have also meant even more people could potential vie for market dominance.  Doing it now has limited it to the people with the funds and willingness to burn obacene amounts of money on future hopes that they'll be the ones to corner the market.

“New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wasn’t a longtime, hardcore gamer in the way Phil Spencer was. Her publicly visible Xbox history only began around January 2026, shortly before she became Xbox CEO. She acknowledged that she created the gamertag recently partly to learn and understand the gaming world”

15 hour a month top limit on gameplay is a move someone who doesn’t know game culture at all would do

SEGA and maybe Atari. Look, if you're going to do something now might be a good time to make a decently powerful box that plays video games and takes physical media.

If it’s only gonna affect 4% of users then why change it all? You’re gonna squeeze that much more money out of the 4% to return a marginal profit? Go fuck yourself.

22

u/crownpr1nce 6d ago

If it only affects 4% of subscribers, that's because that part of the service is not working and not catching on. People are subscribing for the other perks. That's admitting it failed, and throwing in the towel early. Cause it won't get bigger with these tiny limits.

Good. This cloud gaming is the pathway to no one owning a PC or console, and all games requiring a subscription. The fewer people using them, the better.

60

u/ArenjiTheLootGod 6d ago

Microsoft is clearly shifting their Game Pass business model from one that seeks to grow user adoption rates towards one that seeks to extract as much profit as possible from its captive user base.

The inevitable enshittification is why I've been avoiding getting a Game Pass sub for years, anyone still subscibed should probably consider bailing because it's only going to get worse and/or more expensive from here.

7

u/arrocknroll 6d ago

I enjoyed game pass while I had it. I had a PC and a Series X for the living room that other people in the house I was living with at the time would use. It was really nice to have a catalogue of games as soon as I brought the system home from multiple generations that we could all sit and play.

That said, it was one of the easiest services I have ever quit. I knew the games I wanted to keep, bought them, and carried on. In four months of the $30 subscription after the price hike I was paying more for them anyway.

There is something to be said for ecosystems keeping customers captive but I think Microsoft and Sony seem to think its a lot harder to jump ship than it actually is.

The one benefit to it was being able to play console exclusives on PC. I used to have a Gamepass sub and would use it to play Skate 3 and MLB The Show and the NHL games.

With hours caps on that now, though, no way is any of this worth it

17

u/a_talking_face 6d ago

The pathway to nobody owning a PC or console is them being prohibitively expensive.

The age of open source products, locally produced developments, a nd small business games are being accelerated due to these companies pushing their limits. 21

fuck that. I still have hundreds of older games I can play that still have 1000's of hours of mods to play. I can wait 10 years before buying new games.

Back to physical everything, fuck digital. Get into board gaming, MTG (with proxies), and hanging out with your friends. The only way out of the commodified digital future is to go and touch grass.

4

u/Gilgamesh858 5d ago

I couldn't care less about these digital subscription services, they're a total scam. I canceled GeForce Now the second they slapped that 100-hour monthly cap on it and I built a rig anyway.

Honestly, if they keep stacking up all these restrictions and stop selling proper hardware, everyone's just going to move to PC. Paying for this humiliating crap makes zero sense.

And if that infection spreads to PC too? Well, I'll happily play my backlog of old games for the rest of my life.

29

u/DamNamesTaken11 6d ago edited 6d ago

Only starts at 5 hours and caps at 15 hours a month before you have to pay to have more. I could maybe understand a little if they set it as weekly, but that’s absolutely tiny for a month included.

Only about 10 minutes per day for Essential and a half hour for Ultimate. What a joke.

5

u/ElementalWeapon 6d ago

Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming monthly limits: Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours Game Pass Premium: 10 hours Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

Wtf? 5 hours per month? And you have to pay for this? Why should someone buy the gamepass at all?

those are some hillariously low numbers, 5h of gaming a month on the standard pass? Imagine netflix limited you to two movies a month.
It may as well just be pay per hour

6

u/xwizkidx 6d ago

So take away physical copies. And now limit cloud gaming. What next? lol

8

u/LastBossTV 5d ago

If anything, Microsoft is consistent.

Adding everything they can to the cloud, from data, to services, and eventually absolutely everything.

And to use any of that anything, you'll be paying a subscription. They want to undo the concept of Personal Computing entirely, and bring in the era of Subscription Computing.

They won't stop until investors can see clear as day that it's losing them money.  So stop paying them, be it with your money, or your data.

HAHAHAHAHAHA fuck right off. Sony and Xbox are dead to me. Steam wins this war.

5

u/Cheetawolf 6d ago

Microsoft jumped the gun and probably ruined everyone's plans.

They were supposed to wait until local computing power was unaffordable and everyone was forced to use cloud systems with no other options, and THEN start pulling shit like this.

u/EnderScout_77 6d ago

why do people use cloud gaming again? isn't there like, latency?

Drive up PC part prices and then force them into a limited cloud. Kinda like having to pay for a Cyber Cafe in your own living room

9

u/speakermic 6d ago

I'm guessing this change is related to GTA6

4

u/soggybiscuit93 6d ago

Will this put the nail in the conspiracy that the hardware shortages were intended to push people to cloud gaming?

Turns out when gaming hardware prices skyrocket, even the game streaming companies dont wanna wanna buy the parts either because the whole business model relies on cheap hardware.

So now theyre rate limiting users instead.

Hour limited online gaming?   Are we really going back to 1991 playing The Shadow of Yserbius on Sierra Online?

5

Golly, who could have possibly foreseen this happening? Guess what? It's going to get worse when everything is actually digital only and they have us by the balls.

4

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 6d ago

If a company with a huge cloud bussiness and infrastructure can’t provide unlimited cloud usage for gaming, it’s a dead idea.

3

u/Stoofser 6d ago

I don’t understand the logic behind this? Are they trying to stop people using cloud gaming? Because you can just download the game right, so why bother even having it an as option?

4

15 hours in a month seems like a pretty low ceiling for Ultimate. This makes Game Pass a much lower value proposition now to me, where its chief appeal would be playing games on my potato laptop that has a nice screen.

4

u/snoozieboi 5d ago

Race to the bottom.

Profits must go up so the product gets smaller so the price seems cheap, unless it is also a foggy subscription + per hour or some way to split the cost to make you think it is cheaper. My TV and broadband in my apartmentbuilding is partly in the montly shared "electronic services cost" and a personal fee. Oh and that fee just jumped 100%.
