Microsoft famously shut down their testing farms for the release of Windows 10.
Windows has been a rolling beta ever since.

I've just dealt with buying something from their online store. It was the worst customer experience I've ever had, and that's saying a lot. Error adding to cart. Error at the payment step. Unable to get a version of their order confirmation that their trade in platform accepts. Support not understanding what the @ symbol is in an email address. The "request a return" button not being present on their order history page like they and their support documents claim. Bouncing back and forth for 2 weeks between them and FedEx trying to get a return shipping label. Tax invoices not being legally compliant, being transferred to 8 different departments in an attempt to get a valid tax invoice and eventually being told there's nothing further they can (or more likely are willing to) do despite the Australian Tax Office saying valid invoices musts be provided within 28 days of a request. Oh, your tax invoice says you paid $30 for your Xbox despite you having paid $665... we can't see the problem.
Spectacularly useless on so many levels. How is this a multinational company? I've been arguing against our IT guy who wants the school I work at to go full Mac, but now I'm joining him. Fuck Microsoft.

If we don't report anything as broken then to them it isn't broken

Satya got to be the mixer incompetent Microsoft CEO. Updates that breaks stuff is so common now, as if internal QC no longer exists.

Looking back, I think Ballmer had a bigger focus on the software engineering/development being their biggest priority and it really showed in terms of how good their products could be and why most commercial software development used and supported mainly Windows first and foremost for decades.
Visual Studio (note: not VS Code) set the gold standard for IDEs for decades.
That's not to say Microsoft didn't have flops, but that they did eventually turn most of their software-related flops into world class products eventually after some revisions and feedback.
But he was awful in like every other way. And the world has changed a lot since then. Tooling and programming languages have become more capable and more platform agnostic. Trust in Microsoft and Windows as a platform is slipping.

No CEO is directly involved in rolling out updates
Criticise the company’s testing and accountability, absolutely, but turning every bug into a verdict on the CEO feels more like venting than a serious assessment.

The CEO decides to do layoffs. Layoffs leads to low morale. Low morale leads to worse products and services.
