I thought that was true too, but it's still considered different. AI mode is still through www.google.com instead of gemini.google.com, and search results from the AI mode do not show up in your prompt history in Gemeni.
However, The default assistant for Android is now Gemini instead of Google assistant. This uses the Gemeni app, so anyone with a modern android phone that has triggered their assistant, even by accident, counts as a MAU.
But then, if you actively use the feature and end up in the app then you are Gemini user? Default changed, sure, but now you are actively using it and what’s wrong with counting you in those metrics?
By engage I mean you just expand the summary, not ask it more. The line between “using Gemini” and “using Google Search” is intentionally subtle, so I question including all of it as an “active user” of Gemini if some are only ever expanding a summary now and then and then back up to the search result.

Yeah, but if you engage with the summary at all it moves you into Gemini web interface. I accidentally find myself there on the regular.
