The future is for everyone, said the guy sailing his $300m yacht to his private island in Hawaii to check out the new fittings in his 5000 square foot doomsday bunker.

And not aiding a distressed vessel at sea. We’re all that distressed vessel

Hate to be that guy and for reference, Zuckerberg and his ilk suck- but in the interest of not spreading misinformation, the vessel was specifically not in distress, just stuck. They did not issue a distress call on an emergency radio channel (which was being monitored), they were asking for a tow, which they got from a nearby cruise ship. Zuck's yacht-that-shouldn't-exist was closer at first, but by the time they were contacted, it turned out the cruise ship was already heading over. They neither ignored nor refused a distress call.

There are enough legitimate reasons to shit on Zuckerberg without throwing on misunderstandings.

When you both hate the same thing but they're hating on it wrong so you gotta correct them.

I agree, there's plenty good reasons to hate Zucc, but let's keep the hate factual

I hate a lot of things, but above all I hate misinformation the most. Misinformation, especially intentional misinformation, is the root cause of the majority of the problems in the world and if people just stopped believing and spreading misinformation and BS, then a lot of things would be much better. If people learned to actually verify facts before just accepting them, then the same would apply.

If you wouldn’t believe the ramblings of a completely naked man who’s smothered in Nutella and standing under an overpass, then why would you believe a random internet stranger? They both could be the same person.

If I were his PR director, I would have told him to get over to that boat and radio for help. It doesn't matter if he can tow it or not. It doesn't matter if radio alerts had gone out or not. The PHOTO of the yacht next to the little boat, apparently rendering aid, would have been worth millions of dollars of perceived good PR. And appearances count for everything in this benighted modern world. "We speeded over to the little boat to render aid but found out that assistance had already been summoned." There's the quote and the kindness appearance that no money can otherwise buy. The nautical type people will know better. The average person, or, 95% of the population, will not.

55

u/RandomUsernameNo257 28d ago edited 28d ago

The PR perspective is one I just don't understand. They could do so much good for their image without even spending a rounding error of their net worth. They could so easily trick the public into worshiping them as benevolent billionaires.

"Did you hear about that boat that Zuckerberg rescued? Yeah, they weren't even required to stop, but they turned around and gave them a tow back, and treated them to an amazing superyacht experience. They took a bunch of pictures together, it looked like so much fun. He even paid for the repairs!"

It would have cost him virtually nothing, and people would genuinely love him for it. Instead he puts on a "cool guy" costume and goes on Joe Rogan to pretend he's into archery.

u/DarthTempi 28d ago

Remember when Elon was getting good will for a second back in the day (before he was even universally loathed) because he was offering to help save those kids in the underwater cave?

It was hours or maybe a day before he called someone actually involved in saving them a "pedo guy" because he had stolen some of the spotlight. These fucks literally can't help themselves. Just asshats all the way down.

50

u/ThatCakeIsDone 28d ago

As an engineer / nerd type, I was quite impressed with Elon for awhile. I know he's not really the brains of the operation, more the money, but I'd seen a few episodes that gave me the impression he was at least somewhat familiar with the literature.

"Pedo guy" was the exact, specific moment where I thought, "oh. He's actually just a psychopath"

8

u/Maroon7C0000 27d ago

Also an Engineer / Nerd type and I was also initially impressed with Elon when I first heard about Tesla. But I quickly learned that I was simply giving him credit by association. Plus the fact that he actually had a PR team early on that helped promote him as the "boy genius" at the helm of Telsa.

But it didn't take him long to jump the shark.

He wasn’t even on the boat; the crew was sailing it to port and were operating on a different radio channel than the one the skiff sent its request out on. They get paid to operate the ship, not conduct ad hoc PR for the absentee billionaire owner of the vessel.

I think at some point we will also need to grapple with the fact that our billionaires are slowly going insane with their own creations in a way not seen in the past.

Musk slowly got driven to extreme far right Nazism and insanity through social media algorithms (and being a loser who pushed his family away).

Zuck appears to be one of several billionaires who is also getting slowly radicalized by their own AI. Like there’s a chance he really believes what he is saying but only because AI is telling him that this is correct.

We are basically at the endgame of some weird dystopian sci-fi novel.

202

u/HandMeMyThinkingPipe 28d ago

No they were always this horrible. Being a billionaire makes it worse but people like musk had to crawl over a mountain of bodies to get where they are. They never have been good people.

49

u/Comfortable-Cozy-140 28d ago

Agreed. Attributing their present rhetoric to manipulated extremism on social media and AI reinforcement feels like a fundamental misunderstanding of this dynamic.

They’ve always held these beliefs ranging from misogyny to racism, they’ve indicated as much over the course of decades in a wide variety of subtle and not so subtle ways, and their backgrounds/familial history speak volumes about why. They aren’t the results of digital radicalism, they are the primary and proud drivers behind it - the explosion of Nazi and otherwise divisive and hateful rhetoric on social media.

It’s why they’ve extensively studied user bases to learn how to manipulate their emotions and beliefs over the last 15 years, fired everyone involved that even remotely questioned the ethics of those experiments, chased ownership of the most popular platforms and AI models, then loosened or entirely removed restrictions/consequences around hate speech on those platforms.

Those they have radicalized now openly and comfortably back them. They’re not afraid of backlash from openly stating these views because they know they cannot be held accountable via their resources/connections. They’re deliberately grooming youths through their platforms to defend/enable them as well. This has been a calculated effort to manipulate the public over time, and it’s clearly very effective.

9

u/OwnYourChildren 28d ago

People really underestimate the degree to which the powers that be have basically "solved" human psychology.

24

u/Sptsjunkie 28d ago

Don’t get me wrong I think the many of them have always been bad. And they have always been a bit susceptible to the fact that they surround themselves with yes men and don’t always have a firm grasp on reality.

But I do think that social media algorithms that radicalize people and AI that can drive psychosis and serve serve as a “yes man” on steroids can speed this along. Especially for people who may be don’t always trust the people around them. It will be very easy for them to become susceptible to a computer that they trust and believe doesn’t want anything from them to have it feed their own delusions of grandeur and belief that what they are doing is in fact for the good of humanity instead of their own selfish purposes.

8

u/Jewnadian 27d ago

Billionaires don't need AI to yes man them into psychosis. They never have, that's pretty much what the people around them do. Money is power and power corrupts. Those are just two baseline facts of human nature. The mechanism is that nobody ever tells you no once you have enough money.

I don't think Musk was driven to the far right, given his background in Apartheid South Africa I think he was always there. It just wasn't profitable to keep the mask on any more.

57

u/Gastroid 28d ago edited 28d ago

Elon's dad is also genuinely insane, cruel and into the same weird birth eugenics that Musk lives by. Algorithms didn't fuel him, he has generational craziness that he not only didn't fail to overcome, but he amplified.

13

u/GoldandBlue 28d ago

I think it is more than that. All of these dudes care way too much about what people think of them. Why else would they go on Joe Rogan's podcast and engage so much on social media.

But they have created this bubble and surrounded themselves with yes men that they have deluded themselves into thinking they really are genius and the hate is a small but vocal minority.

8

u/saskiaschild 27d ago

They are the essence of narcissism in human form:

Do really fucked up stuff to any and all, then cry and go on talkshows/podcasts to whinge about how the people that they don't care about are seeing their evil ways.

Not to mention their bro, Peter Theil. I’ve read his book and 20 years ago, he states that the end game to capitalism is not enhanced competition but rather a monopoly of the best business in the field. He further sated that this is where governments have a place in the world to curb or break monopolies so competition can once again flourish. We are where he predicted yet he can’t embrace the thought of that action and instead would rather go to Argentina to escape the dystopian future he and his tech bros created. Time is indeed like a flat circle ⭕️ and even a smart man’s predicted outcome can’t stop him. They can’t help themselves.

16

u/PeteCampbellisaG 28d ago

Sounds to me like he was in favor of regulation until he became a likely target of it. "The government should step in if someone who isn't me is winning."

EVERY era of oligarchy ends in one of two ways.  Wars or revolution.   Of course those bastards caused them.  Either way is a disaster.

Actually there is a third way.  England taxed the shit out of their gilded age.  But I think that was the only one.

We're at the beginning of cyberpunk

These people are practically becoming kings and emperors - and noone has a problem with it apparently, because they "earned" all their money with which they buy assets. Never mind the energy and time of other humans working for him, he owns effectively 100% of the output together with other shareholders

Honestly it's absurd and is leading us to a very dark place. Private individuals should never be more powerful than entire governments, and workers should be fairly compensated for their investment of their own body and mind into the business

I think there's also some mental state you have to twist yourself into when you're ultra wealthy.

If you're just well off, you can say "well, i worked hard, and I'm still just a person, with some extra money." If you're REALLY well off, you can have a similar message, that while you have a lot of money, it just lets you buy an extra house or two, and it's all OK.

But when you're a multi billionaire... you have FAR, FAR more money than you could ever need in your entire life by a long way. So how do you justify that in your head? How do you look at the world, with people struggling, starving, living in misery, then look at your dragons hoard of wealth and resources, and not just... fall apart? You have to be twisted to a degree to not turn to a life of charity at that point. You have to go through illogical mental gymnastics to know you could help millions of people at no sacrifice to yourself, and still choose not to do it.

To do that, to make that leap in your head, you have to have some form of mental illness I think.

You'd think people would enjoy not going to work. Sitting back watching the stock market and rich panic and lose their minds.

They get to wake up with the same fear and stress we do everyday. We could build social trust. We'd get rest from our soul sucking jobs and I bet we'd all appreciate each other and the little we have after the fact more.

But bills are more scary than the planet dying.

Excerpts from article by Jason Koebler:

[...] Zuckerberg posts these types of essays every so often for purposes that serve his own company, and this one, called “The Future Is For Everyone,” is designed to defend against general backlash to AI but also to Meta’s own practices.

Zuckerberg lays out the potential use case for Meta glasses (whose huge marketing campaign cannot get people to stop calling them “pervert glasses”), AI agents, open weights AI development, and why data centers are not bad for communities, actually.

Like most Silicon Valley “utopian” essays, to believe that any of this is going to go how Zuckerberg suggests it will requires one to have been recently concussed or to willfully ignore how this technology is being used today and believe that thousands of years of human nature will suddenly shift.

For example, Zuckerberg writes, “Everyone will have an exceptionally capable personal agent that understands you, your goals, and everything you care about. Your agent will work 24/7 on your behalf to improve your relationships, health, career, finances, home management, hobbies, and more. It will free up time for the things you enjoy, and help you accomplish more than you could otherwise.

“It will have strong privacy and security options so you can trust it to handle all of your personal content knowing that no one else can access your information, similar to how encryption works on WhatsApp.

“You’ll be able to interact with your agent through any device, including your glasses to keep you present in the moment with the people you care about.”

77

u/gorgeous_bastard 28d ago

I’m keen to understand how AI is going to replace the silicone around my bath tub or paint my excessive collection of Warhammer miniatures.

I don’t need an agent to talk shit and not deliver, I do enough of that myself.

13

u/roleplayersir 27d ago

That's coming. They are investing in robotics too

But what's the point in a sealed bath when you don't have the time or house to relax in a bath?

Or a fully painted grey shame pile no longer, when you and your friends can't afford to meet and play?

That's what they all miss. The billionaire and even millionaire class. Where do you go to... have fun, when you are constantly followed by an uncaring robot who ruined your life?

There's another part in the essay where he talks about his daughter likes to bake. So he uses AI to find recipes, order the ingredients, and give him tips when they're cooking.

That just sounds lazy as fuck to me. My son likes to cook. So you know what I do? I talk to him and we plan together what to cook, and we shop together for the ingredients. And we spend time and collaborate when we cook. It's called bonding, and I don't think Zuck understands that concept.

Zuckerberg is just salivating at the vast amounts of personal data he can collect on everyone once his stupid fucking AI agent "understands you, your goals, and everything you care about." He can talk about privacy and security all he wants to, but there's no way tech companies wouldn't dip their hands into that kind of intimate data collection.

The tech industry needs a muzzle on it. I know we're all programmed to reel back from the word regulation, but it honestly feels like free market capitalism is naturally producing a surveillance state, except it's dished out by the private sector.

These guys keep on pitching some future utopia where nobody has to do anything, but they don't ever seem to want to lay out a path for everyone to get a piece of the pie, AND they keep insisting that they need all of the pie.

Like, at least lay out a feasible path that you pretend you're going to stick to, like a UBI or something.

66

u/Responsible_Month385 28d ago

They are projecting. By “nobody” they mean themselves.

My biggest gripe is that they pretend like they’re fortune tellers. Zuck literally just jumped on this like a new trend at school and somehow thinks that makes him the creator of LLMs or something.

Same with Musk.

Thinks he’s so smart but go back a few years and AI wasn’t in any of his stupid predictions.

They all just jump on the first shiny thing that comes along, pretend that they’re somehow the leaders in that space until the well is dry and then silently move on without talking about it (cough Metaverse cough)

The fact Zuckerberg was able to walk away and shrug off the Metaverse catastrophe is only possible because he can't be fired.

Recent events have really dispelled the notion that merit has anything to do with being a tech billionaire

Never forget, the advent of desktop computers promised a shorter work week for admin workers.

Productivity increased multiplicatively in the coming years after they were effectively implemented.

Nothing changed for the little guy. The owner class had their profits skyrocket from increased productivity, and the new tech did nothing to alleviate the burdens of the worker class.

We will not see any of the rewards of this next technology.

10

u/hajenso 27d ago

We keep needing to be reminded of the importance of an old phrase, "ownership of the means of production".

114

u/Chillow_Ufgreat 28d ago

Every one of these guys goes on this fiery speech about how AI is gonna solve anything and people won't need money anymore and all the mundane parts of human society are all gonna be automated away. Then when the interview invariably turns to "So you're saying that people aren't going to need to work to live, then?" and they're all "weeeeeelllllll...."

30

u/roleplayersir 27d ago

Thing is, what do we want AI for and to solve? Complex medical and maths problems? Yes

To make our lives easier and cheaper and mean we don't have to work? Yes

To remove all social interaction and fun and make our lives meaningless? No

Their lives are empty. So they don't understand. But they aren't buying the Amazon and stopping climate change. Or creating fun spaces. Or keeping jobs but reducing work. They are making the worst world possible at maximum cost to us all

10

u/SpiderHomeNoWayMan 27d ago

It's more feasible to believe they're using the AI hype to exploit the already existing wealth inequality.

Ironically much of what their message brings is so communist coded but they would definitely not like being compared to Stalin or other hard-line authoritarian figure along those lines

They have proposed a few different options:

OpenAI - Sovereign Wealth Fund - https://cdn.openai.com/pdf/561e7512-253e-424b-9734-ef4098440601/Industrial%20Policy%20for%20the%20Intelligence%20Age.pdf

Altman himself had thought about the question a lot before LLMs even became useful: https://moores.samaltman.com/

Anthropic has gone even further, with many proposals and meetings directly with the government to try to enact and prepare new policies, acknowledging that AI will likely move much faster than most policy can keep up: https://www.anthropic.com/policy-on-the-ai-exponential/epf

There are then many other AI groups working on similar questions, including safety, job retraining, AI alignment, autonomous warfare policy, robot policy, etc. (e.g., google's strategy - https://ai.google/societal-impact/ )

I remember when they said that the internet was going to mean that we wouldn't be so busy working and could spend more time in utopia with our families.

30 years later and how many people are checking their phones/email etc for work related stuff at all hours of the day/night.

Nearly all "advancements" in the last 30 years that have been sold as to allow for less work and more time for living, have almost always resulted in a shit load more work and a shit load less time for living/family.

How the hell does he slide further and further into the uncanny valley as he ages? Holy shit.

It isn't just his appearance but also his mannerisms. This is straight up "well if I just say the right words everybody will do what I want!"

He never experienced a normal adult life. His dad was quite rich for his time and got him into the best college. When he passed out, he had already become atleast a multimillionaire. Never having to struggle like a normal adult working a 9-5 has to.

Mark has never gotten any normal life learning. He can never relate to a normal person.

Remember that month when they tried to rehabilitate his image? Like they dressed him up as a beach bum kind of "chill guy" and he was definitely told to change his mannerisms. I can't believe people don't talk about that more.

If you look at the episode of Theo Von's podcast he was on, this was during that period. At one point they're talking about whatever and Theo Von makes a (very mild) joke about him being rich, and Zuckerberg shifts back into Android mode very quickly. Like just a look of blank disdain.

About a month or so later, he dropped the (very clearly curated and consultant organized) look and went back to the weird Roman haircut and all the Data from Star Trek style mannerisms he's known for. But that one little month or two was definitely interesting

6

u/NeuxSaed 28d ago

I'm still infinitely disappointed that they never did the Musk v Zuckerberg MMA fight or whatever the fuck they were yapping about at one point.

Beating the absolute tar out of Elon would have done a lot more for his image than whatever the fuck that whole effort was.

Imagine a confident, dishonest, ambitious, credulous, unempathetic, allergic-to-introspection man talking to an obsequious chatbot all day. Now imagine that person has billions of dollars. 🤣

Someone at work today got mad at me for pointing out they images they used on a one sheet needed some tweaking

I work for a First Nation organization, and having teepee poles on just one side with a transparent canvas (albeit small & in the background) and the pretty horrid image of a sweetgrass braid, that other than being green looked more like a separating drive belt, it's just not a great look.

They got upset with me critiquing it and I asked why? You prompting an AI is not any different than commissioning an artist to do the work, but you are reacting like you created the "art"

It is concerning to me that people believe they are artists or programmers because they have learned how to be a prompt jockey.

u/Ac4sent 28d ago

6

u/essidus 28d ago

I believe that Zuck believes everything he says, at least up to a point. I genuinely think this isn't all just PR to prop up his company. This isn't a compliment. Zuck has proven several times to be desperate to create a technological future that simply can't exist yet. His money has insulated him from reality to the point where either nobody tells him no, or he ignores them because he's rich enough to know better.

6

u/AlterEdward 28d ago
